Wi-Fi Direct lets a compatible printer connect locally to a phone, tablet, or computer without using a wireless router. Enable the feature on the printer, join its Wi-Fi Direct network from your device, then select the printer in the app or print dialog. Menus and confirmation steps vary by model, and this direct link does not give your device general internet access through the printer.
What Wi-Fi Direct does—and what it does not do
Wi-Fi Direct creates a wireless connection between a printer and a nearby device. It is useful when no local router is available or when a guest needs to print without joining a household or office network. Epson describes its mode as direct communication without a wireless router or access point. HP says that, for most of its printers released after 2014, Wi-Fi Direct can send print jobs without an internet connection. Epson’s Wi-Fi Direct setup guide and HP’s setup instructions describe these uses.

The connection is local, not a substitute for a router or internet service. HP notes that remote printing and some online features require a full network connection. A device connected directly to the printer should not be assumed to have internet access through it.
Check compatibility before you start
“Wireless” alone does not confirm that a printer supports Wi-Fi Direct. Check the exact model’s specifications or user guide for the feature, its setup method, and compatibility with your phone or computer. The documentation from HP and Epson establishes the feature for the documented printers, not for every wireless printer.

Have the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network name (SSID) and password available. Depending on the model, they may be shown on its screen, printed on an information page, displayed in an app, or available through the printer’s embedded settings. Some models also require a confirmation on the printer.
Connect a phone, tablet, or computer
- Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer. Open its network or wireless settings and turn on Wi-Fi Direct. Use the model’s guide for the exact menu or button sequence.
- Find the printer’s network name and password. Read them from the printer’s display, information page, app, or embedded settings, as supported by that model.
- Join the printer’s network from your device. Open the device’s Wi-Fi settings and choose the SSID that belongs to the printer. Check the name carefully, especially if other printers are nearby.
- Authenticate if prompted. Enter the Wi-Fi Direct password or approve the connection at the printer.
- Send the print job. Open the document or photo, choose Print, and select the printer. A computer may require the manufacturer’s driver or network software.
- Reconnect to your usual Wi-Fi afterward if needed. Your device may have left its regular network to join the printer directly.
Platform instructions are not interchangeable across brands. For example, HP documents an Android workflow using the HP Print Service Plugin, an iOS or iPadOS workflow that may use AirPrint, and a Windows flow that can involve adding a printer and entering a WPS PIN within 90 seconds. Those are HP-specific instructions, not universal Wi-Fi Direct steps. See HP’s platform-specific setup page for its documented flow.

Wi-Fi Direct versus joining a regular Wi-Fi network
| Consideration | Wi-Fi Direct | Regular Wi-Fi network |
|---|---|---|
| Router needed for local printing | No; the printer and device connect directly. | Yes; both typically use the same local network. |
| Internet access through the printer | No general network or internet access is provided by the printer’s direct link. | Internet availability depends on the router and its connection. |
| Useful when | A router is unavailable or a guest needs a local print connection without joining the main network. | The printer needs to be shared on the network or used with network-dependent features. |
| Setup and security | SSID, password, discovery, and confirmation behavior depend on the printer model. | Network joining and security depend on the router and printer configuration. |
HP also distinguishes its Wi-Fi Direct feature from its older HP wireless direct mode: its comparison says Wi-Fi Direct requires a WPA2 password, while HP wireless direct makes a password optional. Discovery and simultaneous internet access differ between those HP modes. These distinctions apply to HP’s features and should not be assumed for other brands. HP’s regional feature and security comparison explains the difference.

- The printer does not appear: Confirm Wi-Fi Direct is enabled and ready on the printer. Check that your device joined the printer’s SSID, often named with “DIRECT” at the start, rather than another nearby network.
- The connection does not complete: Look for a password request or a prompt to approve the connection on the printer. Recheck the password shown for that printer.
- The signal is unreliable: Move the device closer to the printer and try again.
- The device or printer seems stuck: Restart both, then reconnect to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network. If needed, forget or remove that network from the device and join it again.
- A computer connects but will not print: Check that the correct printer is selected and that its driver or manufacturer software is installed.
- The connection disappears after shutdown: Some printers disconnect devices when turned off. Epson documents that its Wi-Fi Direct devices must reconnect after the printer is turned back on; check your model’s guide for its behavior.
Reset steps differ by model. Consult the printer’s manual before restoring network settings. HP’s setup page provides additional model and platform troubleshooting guidance: HP printer setup (Wi-Fi Direct).

Keep the direct connection appropriately secured
Use the password-protected connection method offered by your printer, and turn Wi-Fi Direct off when you are finished if you do not need it available. HP also advises choosing a network name that does not reveal personally identifying information. The available security controls vary by model; consult its documentation rather than assuming another printer’s behavior. HP’s comparison and security guidance discusses these recommendations.
