Samsung Galaxy phones can connect compatible USB flash drives and SSDs through the charging port; some setups need a USB OTG adapter. For a portable SSD, the five options below are supported by manufacturer compatibility information, not by a head-to-head test on Galaxy phones. Check your exact phone, cable and drive instructions before buying.
How to choose an external drive for a Samsung phone
These five portable SSDs are selected for documented Android or phone compatibility, connection details, durability features, and manufacturer-rated speed where available. The order is not a performance ranking: the available manufacturer information does not establish comparative results across Galaxy models.

- Confirm the host: Check your exact Galaxy model and Android or One UI version against the drive maker’s compatibility guidance. Samsung notes that compatibility can vary by host device and setup.
- Check the connection: Verify the drive’s connector and included cable. A USB-C plug alone does not guarantee that a particular phone workflow will work; an OTG adapter may be needed.
- Check setup and features: Follow the maker’s file-system and formatting instructions. Do not assume a particular file system or phone security feature is universally supported.

1. Samsung Portable SSD T7
Samsung’s product information identifies Android compatibility, making the T7 a straightforward compact option to consider. Confirm the exact model and cable in the listing, then check compatibility for your Galaxy phone. 2. Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield
The T7 Shield is the ruggedized option in Samsung’s T7 family. Samsung’s portable SSD information supports Android use for the line, but that does not establish results for every Galaxy phone or prove performance under field conditions. 3. Samsung Portable SSD T9
Samsung lists Android phones and tablets as compatible with the T9 and advertises speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s. That is a manufacturer-rated maximum, not a transfer result measured on a Galaxy phone; the phone, cable and setup can limit actual performance. 4. SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD
SanDisk lists USB-C phones and Android 11 or later as compatible. The maker advertises write speeds up to 1,000 MB/s, up to three-meter drop protection, and IP65 water and dust resistance; these are product specifications, not Galaxy-specific test results. Samsung says a USB flash drive or SSD can connect to a Galaxy phone’s charging port, though an OTG adapter may be needed. For Smart Switch, Samsung describes connecting external storage to the old device, choosing the storage option and backing up selected items, then attaching that storage to the new Galaxy device and restoring. If the selected data exceed the available storage, Samsung says you can return later for the remainder.
