A router can work normally while Wi-Fi struggles in one room. Distance, walls, interference, device limitations, or a poorly placed mesh point can weaken the wireless link inside your home. First compare Wi-Fi near the router with Wi-Fi in the problem area; that helps distinguish a local coverage issue from a slow internet connection coming into the home.
Why Wi-Fi can fail in one room while working elsewhere
Distance, walls, and layout weaken coverage
A single router may not send a strong signal to every room. Distance and building materials get in the way, and the size and layout of a home matter. Dense walls, floors, cabinets, and other obstructions can make a weak spot more noticeable. Google explains that walls and distance can leave rooms with slow Wi-Fi or dead zones: Google’s overview of Google Wifi.

Interference and device limits also matter
Nearby Wi-Fi networks, other radio sources, and activity on your own network can affect performance. The device you are using matters as well: its supported Wi-Fi standards and frequency bands may differ from those of the router. A problem on one device does not necessarily mean the router is failing. Apple’s guidance on wireless interference describes symptoms and practical steps to reduce it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst determine whether the problem is Wi-Fi or internet service
- Test near the router. Use the same device and, if possible, the same speed-test service in the affected room and near the main router.
- Compare the results. If the connection is much worse only in the problem room, suspect coverage, interference, or the device’s local wireless link. If it is slow in both places, the issue may be with the internet service or equipment upstream of that room.
- Check with your provider when needed. Google recommends checking provider service if speed tests are lower than expected. Its slow-internet troubleshooting guide distinguishes service problems from Wi-Fi performance issues.
Try these fixes before replacing equipment
Move the router into the open
Place it in a central, open location where practical, rather than inside a cabinet, on the floor, or behind dense obstructions. Keep it away from nearby devices that may interfere. Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi speed guidance covers placement and wired connections.

- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Check for competing networks and radio sources
Interference can make a connection unreliable even when signal coverage seems adequate. If your router offers automatic channel selection, Apple recommends using it when available. Apple also recommends a channel width of 20 MHz for 2.4 GHz and Auto or all widths for 5 GHz and 6 GHz. These settings depend on router capabilities and device support; see Apple’s recommended router and access-point settings.
Check the mesh link, not just the signal in the dead zone
A mesh point must receive a reliable connection from the router or another point. If it is placed inside the dead zone, it may simply extend a weak link. Move it partway toward the weak area, then check the mesh connection after setup. Google’s placement guidance suggests putting a point about halfway toward the target area and no more than two rooms from the router or another point. That is Google-specific product guidance, not a universal spacing rule. Google explains how to place Wifi devices and test a mesh connection.

- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Choose a fix that suits the home’s layout
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Reposition the router or mesh point | The signal is obstructed or a point is too far from its source. | Free and simple, but may not overcome dense construction or a long, complex layout. |
| Whole-home mesh Wi-Fi system | Several rooms or floors need coverage and points can maintain good links. | Convenient coverage extension, but placement, equipment compatibility, and wireless backhaul quality matter. |
| Ethernet-connected access point | You can run Ethernet to the weak area. | Gives the access point a wired connection, but requires cabling and setup. |
| Powerline adapter feeding an access point | A remote room needs a network connection and Ethernet cabling is impractical. | Uses household electrical wiring; usefulness depends on the home’s wiring. |
| ISP troubleshooting | The connection is slow even near the main router. | Addresses the service feeding the home, not a local Wi-Fi dead zone. |
Google notes that a mesh connection can become less reliable and act as a speed bottleneck when its link is weak. If moving a point closer does not solve the problem, an Ethernet-connected access point can avoid relying on a weak wireless backhaul. Google Fiber discusses wired Ethernet for Wi-Fi coverage; Google’s guidance on wireless interference also describes powerline networking and access points.

What to check before buying anything
- Whether the connection is slow only in one area or also near the main router.
- Whether a router or mesh point is blocked, enclosed, or placed too far from its source.
- Whether the affected device supports the router’s Wi-Fi standards and bands.
- Whether mesh points can keep a strong link to the router or another point.
- Whether Ethernet can be run to the weak area, or whether powerline networking is practical in the home.
