Neither Wi‑Fi Calling nor cellular calling always sounds better on an iPhone. Wi‑Fi Calling can be clearer where cellular reception is weak, provided the Wi‑Fi connection and internet path are stable. A strong cellular connection may sound more reliable than congested or unstable Wi‑Fi. The other caller’s connection matters, too.
What changes when you use Wi‑Fi Calling?
Wi‑Fi Calling is a carrier phone call that your iPhone carries over Wi‑Fi when the feature is available and active. It is not an internet voice app call. Carrier and regional support are required. Apple indicates “Wi‑Fi” in the status or Control Center information when Wi‑Fi Calling is in use. See Apple’s Wi‑Fi Calling instructions.

Cellular calls use the carrier’s mobile network. Either path can be affected by the network conditions between you and the carrier, as well as the connection used by the person you called. Apple presents Wi‑Fi Calling as a way to make or receive calls where cellular coverage is little or absent, not as a promise of better audio in every situation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Which connection is likely to sound better?
| Situation | Likely advantage | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weak cellular reception; stable Wi‑Fi and internet | Wi‑Fi Calling may sound clearer or be more reliable | A weak cellular signal can impair a call, while a stable Wi‑Fi path may provide a better connection. |
| Strong cellular reception; congested or unstable Wi‑Fi | Cellular calling may be the better choice | Wi‑Fi Calling depends on the Wi‑Fi-to-internet path, including its delay and stability. |
| Both connections are good, or both are poor | No reliable winner can be assumed | The result depends on conditions at both ends and the voice features supported by both sides. |
For Wi‑Fi Calling, raw internet speed is not the whole story: a speed test does not establish low delay or low packet loss. Signal bars are not a complete measure of call quality either. Apple and carrier guidance identify relevant factors, but do not provide one iPhone metric that predicts how every call will sound.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Why the other caller can change what you hear
Call quality is not determined by your iPhone’s connection alone. Google Fi says HD Voice may use VoLTE, VoNR, or Wi‑Fi Calling when supported at both ends, and that the participant with the lowest-quality connection can determine the audio quality for everyone. That is carrier guidance, not a guarantee that every iPhone call uses the same technology or codec. See Google Fi’s HD Voice information.
When comparing the two paths, ask the other caller whether they hear a change as well. If only one person notices a problem, their device or network may be contributing to it.

What network conditions matter for Wi‑Fi Calling?
GSMA’s March 2025 white paper gives consumer Wi‑Fi Calling quality-of-experience guidance ranges. These are guidelines, not universal pass/fail thresholds or iPhone-specific guarantees. GSMA notes that device, radio conditions, environment, and features used during a session can affect the experience. The figures below are from GSMA’s Wi‑Fi Calling quality-of-experience guidance.

| Voice bandwidth | 1–5 Mbps | 80 Kbps | Below 70 Kbps |

| Jitter | 20–30 ms | 50 ms | Above 150 ms |
| Packet loss | 1–3% | 3% | Above 6% |
These ranges help explain why a fast internet connection can still produce an uneven call: stability and delay matter alongside bandwidth.

How to compare the sound fairly
This is a practical comparison, not a standardized test. Keep the phone, location, contact, and conversation conditions as similar as possible so the connection is the main thing changing.
- Make a call with Wi‑Fi Calling available. Confirm that “Wi‑Fi” appears in the relevant status or Control Center view so you know the call is using Wi‑Fi Calling.
- Make a comparable call where cellular reception is strong, with Wi‑Fi Calling not carrying the call.
- Compare clarity, dropouts or interruptions, delay or talk-over, and reliability in the places where you normally call.
- Ask the other caller whether they hear a difference. Repeat the comparison if results vary.
Do not treat one call, signal bars, or a single speed-test result as conclusive. Network conditions can vary, and the far end of the call can affect the result.

Labels and availability can vary by carrier, region, and iOS version. For current instructions, use Apple’s support page.
What to do if Wi‑Fi Calling sounds poor or does not work
- Confirm that your carrier supports Wi‑Fi Calling and that your iPhone has current software.
- Try another Wi‑Fi network. Apple notes, “Not all Wi‑Fi networks work with Wi‑Fi Calling.”
- Restart the iPhone, then try toggling Wi‑Fi Calling off and back on.
- If the issue continues, contact your carrier; availability and behavior depend on its service and network conditions.

Can an iPhone switch from Wi‑Fi Calling to cellular mid-call?
Apple says a Wi‑Fi call may switch to carrier VoLTE if Wi‑Fi is lost, provided VoLTE is available and turned on. That transition depends on carrier support and conditions, so do not assume every call will switch seamlessly. Apple also says emergency calls use cellular when available; Wi‑Fi may be used if cellular service is unavailable and Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled. Follow Apple’s and your carrier’s current emergency-calling instructions. See Apple’s iPhone guide to Wi‑Fi Calling.
