Best Alternatives to NotebookLM for Keeping Track of Plant Care

If you want to track watering, plant health, photos, and care history, choose a tool built for plant care or set up a workspace to suit your routine. Planta and Planti offer dedicated plant-care features; Notion templates provide a customizable tracker; Obsidian is better for a flexible, local note archive. PlantPal is another option for cataloguing plants and logging tasks. NotebookLM is the point of comparison here—not a plant-care reminder app.

How to choose a plant care app or tracker

Start with how you want to manage care. Some apps suggest schedules and send reminders; a personal tracker lets you decide how often to check a plant and record what you did. In either case, treat a reminder as a prompt to inspect the plant, not proof that it needs water. Light, temperature, soil, pot size, and other conditions affect how quickly a plant dries out.

  • Reminder model: Do you want suggested schedules and notifications, or do you prefer setting your own task frequency and recording completed care?
  • Record depth: Look for the combination you need, such as per-plant notes, photos, health check-ins, care history, and organization by room or location.
  • Guidance: Identification, light readings, and symptom suggestions may be useful, but check recommendations against the plant’s actual conditions.
  • Sharing and connectivity: Decide whether household members need to share care duties and whether records must work offline.
  • Portability and cost: Check whether you can export records, which devices are supported, and whether the features you need are free or require a subscription. Comparable current prices and plan boundaries are not established for these options.

Dedicated plant-care apps

Planta: schedules, logs, and care guidance

Planta’s US App Store listing describes tailored schedules and reminders for watering, fertilizing, repotting, pruning, and misting. It also lists plant identification, symptom analysis and treatment guidance, a light meter, care logs, a personal journal, and sharing care with family or friends. Its official site describes plant organization, care sharing, community features, and light measurement. These are product claims, not independently verified results; treat symptom suggestions as prompts to investigate rather than a diagnosis.

Planta is the more feature-rich fit if you want care prompts alongside logs and guidance in one dedicated app. See the US App Store listing and official Planta site for current details.

Planti: shared records and offline use

Planti’s official product page describes saving plant images, notes, and reminders; using personalized schedules; and organizing plants by room and spot. It also lists household care sharing, offline access with later synchronization, periodic health check-ins with notes and photos, and care analytics. The page says Planti is available for iOS and Android and free to download with optional premium features; check the page for current platform and plan information.

Choose Planti if household coordination, location-based organization, or offline recordkeeping matters more than a larger set of identification and symptom features. Details are on the official Planti site.

Configurable trackers and personal notes

Notion: build a tracker around your routine

Notion’s official plants marketplace includes templates for watering schedules, plant growth, inventories, and routines. A template can give you a structured starting point, and you can adapt its fields and views to match how you keep track of things. The marketplace lists free and paid templates, but inventory and prices can change.

Notion suits you if you enjoy shaping your own system and do not need a dedicated plant-care app to generate care guidance. A template is a workspace you configure and maintain, not a guarantee of automatic reminders or plant-specific recommendations. Browse the Notion plants templates.

Obsidian: a flexible plant journal in local files

Obsidian’s official comparison page says notes are stored on your device, are accessible offline, can be extended with plugins, and use non-proprietary plain-text files. Those qualities can suit a long-running plant journal with custom notes, checklists, and links between plants and care events. The cited information does not claim built-in plant schedules or reminders, so you would need to create your own workflow or explore plugins.

Consider Obsidian if keeping a flexible personal record in local files is more important than ready-made plant-care features. Its storage and comparison statements come from Obsidian; see Obsidian’s comparison page.

PlantPal: log tasks and look back at care frequency

PlantPal’s US App Store page includes a user review describing a plant catalog, records of one-off and recurring tasks, and averages for how often care was performed. The reviewer preferred setting frequencies personally, noting that watering can be difficult to predict. That is one user’s perspective, not a scientific finding or a tested claim about the app. The listing’s release notes describe data portability and export to another app; confirm what export options are currently available.

PlantPal may suit you if your priority is logging what you actually do and reviewing that history. See the US App Store listing for the app’s description and release notes.

Match the tool to your care routine

  • Choose Planta if you want a dedicated app combining schedules, logs, and vendor-described identification or care guidance.
  • Choose Planti if shared household care, offline access, photos, and room-based organization are central.
  • Choose Notion if you want to customize your tracker’s fields and views and are willing to maintain the system yourself.
  • Choose Obsidian if you value an adaptable journal stored as local plain-text notes and can supply your own reminder workflow.
  • Consider PlantPal if you want a catalog and task history, while checking current export details and app capabilities.

Before moving a collection into any app, test the workflow with a few plants: add a location, record a care event, attach a photo if needed, and check how the app handles reminders, sharing, offline access, and export. That small setup check can reveal whether the tracker fits your habits before it becomes your only record.
