A client using a low 802.11 transmission rate can occupy shared radio airtime longer than a faster client. If your router offers Airtime Fairness, enabling it may help faster clients get a better share of service. The setting is model-specific, and slow Wi-Fi can have causes unrelated to legacy devices.
How can a legacy device use more Wi-Fi airtime?
Wi-Fi clients share radio time. A device transmitting at a lower rate can take longer to send or receive the same data than a faster device, leaving less airtime for other clients. TP-Link describes this trade-off for slower devices, while OpenWrt warns that legacy 802.11b rates can reduce airtime efficiency. TP-Link Archer A10 V1 guide; OpenWrt wireless configuration.

That mechanism does not establish that a legacy device is responsible for any particular slow network. Airtime Fairness is one possible control, not a diagnosis or a general cure for Wi-Fi problems.
What is the difference between Airtime Fairness and disabling legacy rates?
| Setting | What it changes | Compatibility risk |
|---|---|---|
| Airtime Fairness | On equipment that supports it, manages how clients share radio time. TP-Link says its Archer A10 V1 implementation can give faster devices better quality of service by sacrificing some network time on slow devices. | Availability and behavior depend on the router or access point. Check the exact model and firmware documentation. |
| Disabling legacy 802.11b rates | Stops the access point from permitting specified low-rate legacy modes; this is a wireless-mode or rate configuration, not Airtime Fairness. | Devices that require those rates may no longer connect. OpenWrt cautions that legacy or poorly behaving devices may need them to interoperate. |
OpenWrt documents the airtime-efficiency trade-off and interoperability risk for legacy rates: OpenWrt wireless configuration. Do not disable legacy rates merely because a device is old; first establish that every device that needs Wi-Fi can still connect under the proposed configuration.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Where is the Airtime Fairness setting?
There is no universal menu path. These vendor instructions are examples for particular equipment, not steps that apply to every router.
TP-Link Archer A10 V1
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface.
- Open System Tools > System Parameters > Wireless Advanced.
- Tick Enable Airtime Fairness, then click Save.
TP-Link’s guide describes this feature as improving overall performance by allocating some network time away from slow devices so faster devices can achieve better quality of service. The path and feature are specific to the Archer A10 V1 guide; other TP-Link models or firmware may differ. TP-Link Archer A10 V1 guide.

NETGEAR access points covered by its support article
- In the access point’s interface, open Management > Wireless > Advanced > Air Time Fairness.
- Select Enable, then click Apply.
NETGEAR’s instructions apply to the models listed in its support article, not all NETGEAR routers or access points. The article, last updated in 2020, describes that implementation as distributing 80% of network bandwidth equally across up to 50 wireless devices, with remaining connected clients sharing the remaining 20%. That is NETGEAR’s product-specific description, not a general Wi-Fi standard or an independently measured performance result. NETGEAR: How do I turn on Air Time Fairness on my access point?

What should you check before changing wireless settings?
- Confirm the exact router or access point model and firmware; feature availability and menu names vary.
- Check which clients depend on legacy wireless support before disabling 802.11b rates or requiring a higher mode.
- After enabling Airtime Fairness, check whether the devices you care about remain connected and whether their performance improves.
- Do not treat a setting change as proof of cause: the available vendor documentation does not establish a typical improvement percentage or a universal ten-second completion time.
Linux’s iw documentation includes legacy bitrate commands, but whether settings take effect depends on driver and firmware cooperation. It is a technical tool reference, not a consumer router-interface recipe. Linux wireless: iw.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Do you need new hardware?
No purchase is required for the documented changes. Consider replacement equipment only if your current router or access point lacks a control you need, or if you have separately established a coverage or capacity limitation. Airtime Fairness availability alone does not show that a new device will fix a slow connection.
