Choose Wi-Fi 6E if you want 6 GHz access on compatible devices at a lower potential cost; consider Wi-Fi 7 if your clients support it and you need its newer capabilities. Neither standard upgrades the Wi-Fi hardware in your existing devices, and a faster router cannot guarantee faster internet or better coverage in every home. A current US offer on TP-Link’s Deco XE75 Wi-Fi 6E mesh system is one example of a discount, but check the final price and whether mesh coverage fits your needs before buying.
What changes when you move to Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 6E adds access to the 6 GHz band for compatible devices. Wi-Fi 7 is a newer standard that also supports 6 GHz, but choosing it does not automatically improve every connection. To use a newer band or standard, both the router and the client device must support it, and the device’s operating system, drivers, and regional settings may also matter.

Intel says its Wi-Fi 6 client products operate on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, not 6 GHz. A Wi-Fi 6 client therefore does not gain 6 GHz support simply by connecting to a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router. The router may still serve older clients, but those clients remain limited to the capabilities they support. See Intel’s Wi-Fi 6, 6E and 7 compatibility guidance.

For Intel Wi-Fi adapters
Intel’s instructions for its supported products call for a compatible 6E or Wi-Fi 7 adapter, a compatible router, and current software. Intel lists Windows 11 and driver version 22.70.0 or later for its Wi-Fi 6E guidance; its Wi-Fi 7 guidance lists driver version 23.10.0 or later, a Wi-Fi 7 router, and Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. These are Intel-specific instructions, not universal requirements for every computer, chipset, or operating system. Check the exact adapter and computer manufacturer’s support information before purchase. Intel’s enablement steps are at How to Enable 6 GHz Band Using Intel Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 Products.

For 6 GHz availability
6 GHz access depends on local spectrum rules and regulatory approvals. Intel also notes that a computer manufacturer may disable 6 GHz on a particular platform. Verify the rules in your country and the exact model’s specifications; do not assume that a device advertised as Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 will expose 6 GHz in every region. Choose based on your devices and home setup
| What to check | Why it matters | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Client support | A newer router cannot add 6 GHz or Wi-Fi 7 capability to a client that lacks it. | List the phones, computers, and other devices you expect to benefit. Confirm their exact Wi-Fi standard and band support. |
| Operating system and drivers | Supported hardware may still need current software or vendor enablement to use 6 GHz or Wi-Fi 7. | Check the computer or adapter maker’s instructions for your model and OS before ordering. |
| Local 6 GHz rules | Band availability varies by country, and a manufacturer may disable it on a device. | Confirm both local approval and the device’s regional specifications. |
| Coverage | A single router and a mesh system address different home layouts; a standard alone does not guarantee coverage throughout a home. | Consider where the router can sit, the areas with weak signal, and whether additional mesh nodes are needed. |
| Wired ports and internet plan | Router ports and the service plan can limit wired throughput, regardless of the Wi-Fi generation. | Compare the router’s WAN/LAN port speeds with your plan and wired devices. The deal examples below do not establish a like-for-like port comparison. |
| Total cost | Discount labels do not show whether a router suits your coverage, client, or port needs. | Compare the final checkout price, included nodes, shipping, and return terms in your region. |
When Wi-Fi 6E is the sensible stopping point
If your main goal is 6 GHz connectivity and you have compatible clients, Wi-Fi 6E may be enough. A mesh kit can also be worth considering where coverage across several rooms matters more than buying a single router with a newer standard.

When Wi-Fi 7 is worth considering
Consider a Wi-Fi 7 router when you have or expect compatible Wi-Fi 7 clients and its features fit your needs. Do not pay extra on the assumption that older devices will become Wi-Fi 7 devices or that every home will see a material improvement.

What the available Wi-Fi 7 performance evidence shows
The Wireless Broadband Alliance announced a residential field trial with CableLabs and Intel in a 4,500-square-foot, two-story home, comparing Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 access points with supporting client devices. The announcement reported a peak of up to 3.5 Gbps and discussed fewer dead zones in that test setting. Those results describe that trial, not a promised speed or coverage improvement in another home. Read the Wireless Broadband Alliance trial announcement.

In that announcement, WBA President and CEO Tiago Rodrigues characterized the trial results as a major advance for residential connectivity. That is an industry alliance executive’s assessment of the alliance’s trial, rather than independent proof of a universal benefit for households.

How to make the purchase decision
- Check your clients. Identify which devices you want to benefit and confirm whether they support 6 GHz or Wi-Fi 7.
- Confirm enablement. For a computer, check its operating-system version, wireless driver, adapter, and manufacturer settings. For Intel Wi-Fi 7 functionality, Intel specifies Windows 11 24H2 or later and a Wi-Fi 7 router.
- Verify local availability. Confirm that 6 GHz is permitted in your country and enabled on the exact device models you plan to use.
- Match the network hardware to the home. Decide whether a single router or mesh system fits your coverage needs, then check WAN/LAN port speeds against your internet plan and wired equipment.
- Compare the live total. Check the price, included units, stock, shipping, and return terms at checkout. Treat a crossed-out list price as the seller’s displayed comparison, not proof that the product is the right value for you.
