ChatGPT’s College Student plugin is a set of course-study tools: it can turn selected class materials into tutoring, quizzes, flashcards, study guides, study plans, practice tests and visual explanations. OpenAI announced it on August 4, 2026, for ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments—not as a universal feature for every ChatGPT account. Despite the broad “college planning” framing, OpenAI’s announcement describes study support, not college selection, admissions, financial aid or application management.
What the College Student plugin can do
Students choose course materials such as notes, readings and slides, then ask the plugin to shape them into a learning activity. OpenAI’s announcement describes the plugin as a way to create personalized learning experiences from materials students are already studying. - Tutoring: Work through a concept with questions and feedback. The guide suggests asking for one question at a time and grounding explanations in selected course sources.
- Practice: Generate quizzes or practice tests to check recall and identify what needs more review.

- Organize study: Ask for a study plan based on the material and the learning goal.
These are described capabilities, not evidence that using the plugin improves grades or learning outcomes. OpenAI’s product announcement says the tools draw on learning science, but the cited announcement and guide do not report an independent controlled evaluation.

How to use it with class materials
- Pick a goal. Decide whether you want tutoring, a quiz, flashcards, a guide, a practice test or a study plan.
- Choose your sources. Provide relevant notes, readings, slides or other course material you are permitted to use. Connected apps are optional; you can also use uploaded files or pasted text.
- Set the approach. Specify how the tool should help—for example, ask one question at a time, wait for your answer, then explain mistakes using the supplied course sources.
- Study actively. Answer questions, review feedback and use the results to decide which topics to revisit. You can request flashcards in Anki-ready CSV format when that suits your workflow.
You can tell the plugin to use only the sources you selected, or explicitly allow General Knowledge as well. If you want answers grounded solely in class materials, say so; if you want broader context, enable General Knowledge deliberately and check any added claims against your course materials.

Who can access it
OpenAI says the educator and student plugins are available in ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments. The Academy guide notes that access can depend on an administrator enabling or installing the plugin; connected-app availability also depends on workspace settings, role and permissions. The feature should not be assumed to be available in every personal ChatGPT account.
ChatGPT Edu is intended for institutions deploying AI across campus. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu help page lists features including advanced tools, custom GPT sharing, higher message limits and administrative controls. Its privacy discussion specifically names ChatGPT Enterprise, so those Enterprise-specific statements should not automatically be read as descriptions of every Edu deployment.

What “college planning” does—and does not—mean here
The plugin can help plan study activity: for example, organize topics into a study plan or turn lecture material into a sequence of practice. The documented feature set does not include choosing colleges, evaluating admissions chances, managing applications or advising on financial aid. OpenAI separately says partnerships with platforms such as Handshake can help students connect skills to internships and early-career opportunities, but that statement does not establish a Handshake integration with the College Student plugin.

OpenAI’s Academy guide tells students to follow their school’s policies, not submit generated work as their own, and check explanations against assigned sources. A useful way to keep the tool in a learning role is to attempt a question before viewing its answer, ask it to explain errors using your course materials, and confirm important details in the original readings or with your instructor.
OpenAI’s August 4, 2026 announcement reports that more than 200 million people ages 18–24 use ChatGPT each week and says advanced student users use ChatGPT capabilities roughly 90–99% less than power users. Those are company-reported figures, not independent estimates in the cited materials, and neither measures the College Student plugin’s effectiveness. The announcement also quotes University of Pennsylvania senior Praja T. describing the plugin as helpful for engaging with course materials and preparing for exams; that is a user testimonial published by OpenAI, not independent efficacy evidence.
