Wi-Fi 6 vs 6G: What Each Wireless Technology Means

Wi-Fi 6 names a Wi-Fi generation, while 6G refers to the next mobile-telecommunications generation. Wi-Fi 6E—not Wi-Fi 6 alone—indicates 6 GHz capability.

No. Wi-Fi 6 and 6G refer to different kinds of wireless technology. Wi-Fi 6 is a generation of Wi-Fi based on the IEEE 802.11ax standard; 6G is the expected next generation of mobile telecommunications, known in the ITU framework as IMT-2030. The similar number is a naming coincidence, not a sign that they are the same network.

What does Wi-Fi 6 mean?

Wi-Fi Alliance introduced “Wi-Fi 6” as the consumer-facing name for products and networks based on IEEE 802.11ax. It identifies a Wi-Fi generation, not a mobile-network generation or a particular radio frequency. Wi-Fi Alliance announced the name in 2018.

What does 6G mean?

6G refers to the expected next generation of International Mobile Telecommunications, the mobile-telecommunications framework managed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The ITU calls its framework IMT-2030. Its December 2023 announcement said proposed radio-interface technologies were expected to be submitted for ITU-R consideration in early 2027. That is a standards-process milestone, not a consumer launch date or evidence that finalized 6G networks are already deployed.

Does Wi-Fi 6 mean 6 GHz?

No. The “6” in Wi-Fi 6 names the Wi-Fi generation; it does not mean every Wi-Fi 6 device can use the 6 GHz band. Wi-Fi 6E is the related label for Wi-Fi 6 devices capable of operating in 6 GHz. Wi-Fi Alliance introduced the term in 2020, describing it as a way to identify Wi-Fi 6 devices with that capability in markets where regulators might make the spectrum available. The Alliance’s announcement explains the Wi-Fi 6E designation.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Whether a 6E device can use 6 GHz depends on both the device specifications and the rules where it is used. Check the local regulator’s requirements and the specifications of the router and client device; the Wi-Fi 6 label alone does not establish 6 GHz support.

How do Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E and 6G differ?

Term Technology family What the label identifies Practical point
Wi-Fi 6 Wi-Fi, for wireless local networking A Wi-Fi generation based on 802.11ax Does not by itself indicate 6 GHz capability.
Wi-Fi 6E Wi-Fi, for wireless local networking Wi-Fi 6 devices capable of operating in 6 GHz Actual use depends on device support and local rules.
6G / IMT-2030 International Mobile Telecommunications, or cellular The ITU framework for the next mobile generation Standards development is ongoing; the term does not mean a finalized consumer service is available.

Are Wi-Fi and cellular alternatives?

They are distinct technologies, but they can complement one another rather than serving as interchangeable labels. The Wireless Broadband Alliance describes Wi-Fi as common indoors and advocates coordination between Wi-Fi and cellular networks to support broader connectivity. That is the Alliance’s position, not a guarantee about the coverage or performance of any particular network. Its statement on Wi-Fi and 6G convergence outlines that view.
