Wi-Fi 6: Upgrade Only If Your Network Has a Reason

A Wi-Fi 6 upgrade makes sense when replacing a router, addressing airtime congestion or seeking supported features—not simply because Wi-Fi 6 is newer.

No—there’s no need to replace a reliable Wi-Fi setup just because Wi-Fi 6 is newer. Consider an 802.11ax router when your current router needs replacing, compatible devices are competing for airtime, or you have a specific need for Wi-Fi 6 features. Wi-Fi 6 can improve how supported devices share wireless capacity; it does not guarantee faster internet service or better performance in every home.

What Wi-Fi 6 changes—and what it doesn’t

Wi-Fi 6 is the name for the 802.11ax wireless standard. Its cited efficiency features include OFDMA, MU-MIMO and Target Wake Time. In broad terms, OFDMA lets supported equipment allocate channel resources among multiple clients, while Target Wake Time coordinates when devices wake to communicate and when they can sleep. These are ways to manage wireless airtime, not promises of a particular speed increase for every device. Intel explains OFDMA and Target Wake Time in its Wi-Fi 6 overview; the Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification record for a Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 device lists OFDMA, MU-MIMO and Target Wake Time.

Feature support and implementation vary by equipment. A Wi-Fi 6 router cannot give Wi-Fi 6 capabilities to a phone, laptop or other client whose radio supports only an older standard. And a faster wireless link, if your equipment can achieve one, is not the same as a faster internet plan. Actual throughput and latency depend on both ends of the connection, distance, radio conditions, configuration and the internet service.

When to keep your current router

If the network is reliable, covers your home adequately and meets your household’s needs, there is no general requirement to upgrade. The cited sources describe Wi-Fi 6 features and compatibility; they do not establish a universal performance threshold or a guaranteed real-world speed gain that makes every existing network worth replacing.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Keep the current setup if you have no coverage, reliability, congestion or compatibility problem.
  • Don’t expect a router change alone to raise the speed of your internet plan.
  • Don’t expect older client devices to gain Wi-Fi 6 features just by connecting to a newer router.

When a Wi-Fi 6 router is worth considering

Wi-Fi 6 is a reasonable option when you are replacing a router anyway and have compatible client devices, or when many active devices share wireless airtime and you want equipment with newer airtime-management features. Whether that helps your household depends on the actual devices, router, home layout, interference and configuration—not the standard name alone.

When comparing routers, check that the standard and bands match the capabilities of your devices. Also consider home coverage, wired-port requirements and configuration features. For performance, look for credible independent testing of the exact router model; a headline theoretical speed does not establish what it will deliver in your home. The cited sources explain standards and compatibility, not the performance of individual router models.

Will older devices work with a Wi-Fi 6 router?

Generally, yes: older devices can continue connecting using the Wi-Fi modes they support. Cisco says Wi-Fi 6 access points and clients support mandatory earlier Wi-Fi modes to provide backward compatibility. That does not turn an older device into a Wi-Fi 6 client or give it Wi-Fi 6 performance. See Cisco’s Wi-Fi 6/6E FAQ for its compatibility explanation.

Do you need Wi-Fi 6E for 6 GHz?

Yes. Ordinary Wi-Fi 6 uses the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands; Wi-Fi 6E adds access to 6 GHz. To use 6 GHz, both the router and the client need compatible Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 support, and local rules must make the band available. A Wi-Fi 6E router can still serve older devices on supported 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands, but those devices cannot use its 6 GHz band. Intel outlines the client-side distinction in its 6 GHz support guide; Cisco also distinguishes Wi-Fi 6E’s 6 GHz operation in its FAQ.

Could you upgrade a computer instead of the router?

A Wi-Fi 6 adapter may be an option if you want to update one compatible PC while keeping your router. It only helps that computer connect with Wi-Fi 6 if the router also supports Wi-Fi 6. Before buying, verify the computer’s exact model, interface, operating system and antenna requirements. Adapter modules are not universally interchangeable: Intel, for example, says its AX201 uses a proprietary interface and is limited to select Intel platforms, unlike the AX200. Check the exact computer and module specifications in Intel’s AX201-versus-AX200 compatibility explanation and Wi-Fi 6 product catalog.
