Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025, so a VPN cannot unblock or restore the service. If you want to keep using Microsoft’s messaging and calling tools, Microsoft’s stated transition path is Teams Free; if you need to call ordinary phone numbers, you’ll need to choose a separate calling service.
Why a Skype VPN cannot work in 2026
A VPN can change the network connection your device uses, which may help troubleshoot some connection problems. It cannot make a discontinued service available again. Microsoft states that consumer Skype was retired on May 5, 2025. That means searches for the “best Skype VPN,” or ways to “bypass VoIP blocks” and “unblock Skype from anywhere,” no longer describe a problem a VPN can solve. Microsoft’s Skype retirement notice is the definitive source for the service status.

Microsoft Support’s guidance for trouble calling a mobile or landline in Skype surfaced a narrow troubleshooting step: disconnect from the VPN and try the call again. That instruction applies to troubleshooting a call in Skype; it is not evidence that a VPN can evade a block, nor a solution for the retired consumer service. Start with the function you actually relied on. App-to-app conversations, calls to ordinary phone numbers, and having a virtual phone number are different needs; one replacement may not cover all of them. The Associated Press described these categories and tradeoffs in a May 2025 overview, but that report does not establish current pricing or availability. For messaging and app-to-app calls
Microsoft’s own migration option is Teams Free. Microsoft says former Skype users can sign in on a supported device using their Skype credentials, and that contacts and chats transfer automatically. This is the clearest route if your priority is continuing with Microsoft’s messaging and app-based communications rather than restoring Skype itself. Check Microsoft’s transition page for the supported-device details and the exceptions to what transfers.
For calls to landlines or mobile numbers
Choose a service that explicitly supports outbound calls to the countries and number types you need. App-to-app calling does not automatically mean calls to ordinary phone numbers are included. Confirm current calling rates, geographic eligibility, and whether the service supports the destinations you intend to call; the 2025 AP report is useful for understanding the kinds of alternatives, not for confirming today’s terms.

For a virtual phone number
Check whether a provider offers a number in the country you need, whether it allows you to port an existing number, and whether the number can receive the types of verification texts you rely on. These features vary and can have geographic or third-party limitations. Do not assume that a virtual number is interchangeable with a mobile number for account verification.
What happened to Skype chats, numbers, and paid calling
Microsoft’s support page says the Skype export portal accepted data-export requests until June 15, 2026. That deadline has passed. The same page says data not retained through the described Teams activity may be deleted after that date, and that Skype Number subscriptions ended in May 2026. Microsoft also discontinued consumer paid calling services on its published timelines. Consult Microsoft’s notice for the detailed data-transfer exceptions and the service-specific timeline; do not rely on old instructions that say you can still request a Skype export.

Microsoft distinguishes Skype for Business from consumer Skype: the business product was not affected by the consumer retirement. The shutdown described here concerns consumer Skype, not Skype for Business.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy a VPN, router, or headset to get Skype back?
No. A VPN subscription, VPN-capable router, travel router, headset, or network adapter cannot restore retired consumer Skype. Buy networking or audio equipment only for a separate, current use—not on the expectation that it will make Skype available again.
