To check whether your computer can use Wi-Fi 6, find the wireless adapter’s supported radio types and look for 802.11ax. Then confirm that your router supports Wi-Fi 6, the band you want is available, and your operating system and drivers support the connection. Wi-Fi 6 uses 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; 6 GHz requires Wi-Fi 6E or newer equipment at both ends.
Check whether your adapter supports Wi-Fi 6
On Windows, the quickest check is the built-in wireless driver report:

- Open Command Prompt or Terminal.
- Enter
netsh wlan show drivers. - Find Radio types supported. If the list includes
802.11ax, Microsoft identifies that as Wi-Fi 6/6E radio capability. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi guidance describes this check.
This result does not tell you whether the adapter can connect on 6 GHz. For that, identify the exact adapter model and check its specifications and the computer maker’s documentation. A model name by itself may not establish which features are enabled in a particular computer.
Find the adapter model and driver
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and note the name of the wireless adapter.
- Check its driver version and date, then compare them with the current driver guidance for your computer model from its manufacturer.
Windows may report only the radio types exposed by the installed driver. A driver can also filter a frequency that the adapter hardware supports, so a missing network is not always proof that the hardware lacks that band. Confirm the router and frequency band
Compatibility depends on both ends of the connection. Check the router or access point documentation for Wi-Fi 6 or 802.11ax support, the bands it broadcasts, and whether Wi-Fi 6 mode is enabled. Intel recommends that an 802.11ax access point support 5 GHz and have 11ax mode enabled; see Intel’s recommended 802.11ax connectivity settings.

Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E are not interchangeable labels for band support. Intel says Wi-Fi 6 products operate on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; Wi-Fi 6E adds access to 6 GHz, as does Wi-Fi 7. Intel’s explanation of 6 GHz support was last reviewed September 18, 2024. Microsoft also outlines band range and obstacle trade-offs in its guide to Wi-Fi and home layout.

For 6 GHz on Intel systems, Intel calls for Wi-Fi 6E- or Wi-Fi 7-capable PC hardware, a matching router, and updated Windows 11. Band availability and regulatory rules differ by jurisdiction, so check the computer and router makers’ documentation for your region rather than assuming 6 GHz is available everywhere.

Check the operating system and drivers
Even supported hardware can be limited by its software. Install the current wireless driver recommended for your exact computer, and check the manufacturer’s operating-system support for the adapter. Microsoft’s cited Wi-Fi guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; however, Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Intel’s 6 GHz guidance specifies updated Windows 11 for the Intel configuration it addresses.

If the router’s network does not appear, check that the router is broadcasting the band and mode you expect, and that the adapter and driver allow that frequency. The driver report and the adapter’s official specifications are complementary checks: neither should be treated as a complete substitute for the other.
Decide whether an adapter upgrade will fit
A computer that lacks Wi-Fi 6 may be upgradeable, but an adapter’s Wi-Fi generation alone does not establish that it will work in a particular machine. Before buying an internal card, verify:

- Host interface and physical fit: Check the computer’s service documentation and confirm the exact slot or interface the card requires.
- Manufacturer validation: Look for compatibility guidance for the exact computer model, not just a similar-looking model.
- Operating system and drivers: Confirm current drivers are available for the operating system you use.
- Antennas: Check that the computer’s antenna arrangement supports the card and bands you want.
- Band and regional support: Verify the desired frequencies are supported by the card and permitted for your device and location.
For example, Intel lists the AX203 interface as M.2 CNVio2 and cautions that feature availability varies by system. That makes the host computer’s requirements important even when the card’s model specifications appear to match. See Intel’s Wi-Fi 6 AX203 specifications.

Use the product’s certification as one check, not the whole answer
The Wi-Fi Alliance certificate for Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 identifies it as an internal adapter certified for Wi-Fi 6 Release 2, with 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz capabilities. The certificate records certification on June 7, 2024; it is evidence of the product’s certified capabilities, not proof that the card fits or is supported in every computer. 802.11axin Windows’ supported radio types indicates Wi-Fi 6/6E radio capability, but does not by itself establish 6 GHz support.- Wi-Fi 6 support on the computer does not make a non-Wi-Fi-6 router operate as Wi-Fi 6; both ends must support the relevant generation and band.
- A compatible band and generation do not guarantee a particular real-world speed. Results depend on the router, environment, client configuration, and internet service plan.
For the most reliable answer, match the exact adapter and computer documentation with the router’s specifications and settings. This is especially important for 6 GHz and internal-card upgrades, where a generation label alone leaves key compatibility questions unanswered.
