USB-to-SATA Adapters: What to Choose for Your Drive

For a 3.5-inch SATA drive, choose an adapter with external power. For a bare 2.5-inch drive, compare compact options and verify the USB connector and speed limits.

For a 3.5-inch desktop hard drive, choose a USB-to-SATA adapter with its own power supply, such as the StarTech USB312SAT3. For a bare 2.5-inch SATA drive, the Sabrent EC-SS31 is a compact option. Match the adapter to the drive’s size and the computer’s USB port; published USB and SATA rates are interface ceilings, not guaranteed copy speeds.

Which USB-to-SATA adapter should you choose?

These recommendations reflect documented specifications from the manufacturers, not controlled head-to-head testing. The right choice depends first on the drive’s physical size and whether it needs external power.

Option Documented fit and specifications Choose it when
StarTech USB312SAT3 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs; USB up to 10Gbps, SATA III up to 6Gbps, UASP, TRIM, S.M.A.R.T. and 4Kn support. Includes a universal AC adapter. StarTech says it has been tested with drives up to 6TB. You need one powered adapter for either common drive size, especially a 3.5-inch desktop drive.
Sabrent EC-SS31 2.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs; USB 3.1 Type-A, up to 10Gbps, and UASP support. You want a compact adapter for a 2.5-inch drive and your computer has a compatible USB-A port. It is not documented for 3.5-inch drives.
UGREEN 2.5-inch enclosure Houses a 2.5-inch SATA drive; USB 3.0, stated up to 5Gbps, and UASP. You want the drive enclosed rather than left exposed on an adapter cable.
UGREEN 3.5-inch enclosure Houses a 3.5-inch SATA drive; stated up to 5Gbps and UASP. The supplied power must be connected. You want a housed desktop drive setup and can connect its external power.

Specifications and package contents can change by region or revision. Confirm the current manufacturer documentation and included power supply for the exact model you are buying.

Check drive size, interface, and power first

2.5-inch SATA drives

Many 2.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs can be powered over USB, though some drives may need additional power. Both the StarTech USB312SAT3 and Sabrent EC-SS31 list support for 2.5-inch SATA drives. The Sabrent is specified for 2.5-inch drives only; do not use that listing as evidence it supports a 3.5-inch drive.

#1 Best Overall
SABRENT USB 3.0 to 2.5in SATA Adapter Cable for SSD & HDD, UASP (EC-SSHD) | USB-A to SATA; 5Gbps; USB-powered, no external power; SATA I/II/III; SSD & laptop HDD; hard drive reader
  • 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
  • USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
  • USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
  • Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device

3.5-inch SATA drives

A 3.5-inch desktop hard drive needs external power; USB power alone is not enough. StarTech documents a universal AC adapter with the USB312SAT3 and says it can serve 3.5-inch as well as 2.5-inch SATA drives. Check that the package includes a power supply with a plug suitable for your region.

Confirm SATA and host connections

These products are for SATA drives. Check that the drive itself has a SATA connection and that the adapter’s drive-side connector and physical support match it. On the computer side, check the USB connector: the Sabrent EC-SS31 is specified with USB Type-A. A USB-C-shaped port on a computer does not by itself establish compatibility with a Type-A adapter; use a suitable connection arrangement and confirm the supported link rate.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT) | SATA HDD/SSD only, Not USB-C, Not M.2 NVMe, 3.5in needs included 12V adapter, hard drive reader, hdd enclosure
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.

What the speed numbers do—and do not—tell you

StarTech lists a USB interface rate up to 10Gbps and a SATA III rate up to 6Gbps for the USB312SAT3. Sabrent lists USB data rates up to 10Gbps for the EC-SS31. UGREEN lists up to 5Gbps for the cited enclosures. These are manufacturer-published interface specifications, not promises of a particular file-copy rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Actual transfers can be limited by the drive, computer’s USB port, cable, adapter’s bridge electronics, file sizes and pattern, or other system bottlenecks. The cited manufacturer pages do not provide comparable measured benchmarks, so their specifications cannot establish which option is fastest in real use.

UASP support

StarTech and Sabrent list UASP support for their cited adapters, and UGREEN lists it for the cited enclosures. Treat this as a compatibility feature to compare, not a guaranteed percentage speed increase: the available product specifications do not establish a measured gain for these particular models.

Adapter cable or enclosure?

A bare adapter is useful for temporary access, diagnostics, or swapping among drives: the drive remains exposed while connected. An enclosure is the more suitable form when you want the drive housed. The cited UGREEN 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch products are enclosures, not bare adapter cables; the 3.5-inch model requires its supplied power to be connected.

Before connecting an old or replacement drive

  • Match the adapter to the drive’s physical size and SATA interface.
  • For a 3.5-inch drive, use an adapter or enclosure with external power and connect that power supply.
  • Check the host-side USB connector and the computer port’s supported capability; a connector shape alone does not prove a particular data rate.
  • Verify capacity compatibility for your specific drive. StarTech states that the USB312SAT3 was tested with drives up to 6TB; that is a product-specific tested-capacity claim, not a general SATA limit.
  • If the drive contains files you need, avoid formatting or initializing it when prompted until you understand the prompt and have confirmed the data is backed up.
