Yes. Wi-Fi 5 devices are still usable, and a Wi-Fi 6 access point can communicate with Wi-Fi 5 clients. That does not show how common Wi-Fi 5 is today, or whether a particular router is still receiving security updates: those are separate questions that depend on usage data and the exact product.
What Wi-Fi 5 means
Wi-Fi 5 is the consumer name for IEEE 802.11ac. IEEE says the standard was introduced in 2013 and describes it as offering greater bandwidth, additional channels and improved modulation. IEEE’s working-group timeline characterizes 802.11ac as “Very High Throughput < 6 GHz.” (IEEE Standards Association; IEEE 802.11 Working Group)

IEEE cites a headline data rate of up to 3.5 Gbit/s for 802.11ac. That is a standard-era maximum capability, not a promise of the speed an individual device will achieve in a home; actual results depend on the equipment and network conditions. (IEEE Standards Association)

Will Wi-Fi 5 devices connect to a Wi-Fi 6 network?
In the deployment guidance published in 2019, the Wireless Broadband Alliance says a Wi-Fi 6 access point can communicate with legacy 802.11ac clients. In practical terms, a Wi-Fi 5 phone, laptop or other compatible client does not automatically become unusable when a network moves to Wi-Fi 6. (Wireless Broadband Alliance, Wi-Fi 6 Deployment Guidelines and Scenarios, section 2.4.1)
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Compatibility does not mean an older client gains every capability of the newer network. The guidance supports communication between generations; it does not establish that each Wi-Fi 5 device supports every band, feature or performance level available from a particular access point. Check the specifications for the access point and the devices you intend to keep.
Does “still used” mean Wi-Fi 5 is still common?
Usability and prevalence are different claims. The available sources establish the Wi-Fi 5 standard’s identity and compatibility with Wi-Fi 6 access points, but they do not provide a current count or percentage of active Wi-Fi 5 routers, homes or client devices. It would be misleading to infer a present-day usage rate from those technical documents.

- OneMesh Compatible Router - Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders
- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Does a working Wi-Fi 5 router need replacing?
Not just because Wi-Fi 6 exists. The IEEE lists IEEE 802.11-2024 as an active revision of the broader 802.11 family, but that status does not determine whether an individual Wi-Fi 5 product is supported or secure. The sources establish no universal end-of-support date for Wi-Fi 5 routers or clients. Check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact model, including whether firmware and security updates are still provided. (IEEE Standards Association, IEEE 802.11-2024)

How to decide whether to upgrade
- Check support first. Look up the exact router model with its manufacturer and confirm its firmware and security-support status.
- Identify a real limitation. Consider whether your current network fails to meet a specific need, rather than treating the generation label alone as a reason to replace it.
- Check devices you plan to keep. The Wireless Broadband Alliance’s guidance supports Wi-Fi 6 access-point communication with 802.11ac clients, but verify compatibility for your particular equipment.
- Choose based on the outcome you need. If your equipment remains supported and works for your needs, the evidence here does not make an upgrade mandatory. If it does not, a newer access point is an option to evaluate—not a guaranteed fix for every performance problem.
