Windows does not document a universal switch for turning webcam on/off notifications on or off. Microsoft says a device with a camera light uses that light to indicate camera activity; if the device has no camera light, Windows shows a notification when the camera turns on or off. Check camera permissions, Windows 11 camera controls, and your device’s physical switches if the camera is not behaving as expected.
How Windows indicates webcam activity
The activity indicator depends on the hardware: a camera light indicates use when the device has one; otherwise Windows shows a notification when the camera turns on or off. Microsoft’s camera privacy guidance describes this behavior but does not document a separate setting that forces the on-screen notification on every Windows 10 or 11 device.

Check whether Windows and apps can access the camera
Permissions control access; they are different from the light or notification that indicates camera activity. Open the camera privacy page for your Windows version:
Recommended Free Tools
- Windows 11: Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Windows 10: Settings > Privacy > Camera.
Review device camera access and app access. Windows distinguishes Microsoft Store apps from desktop apps, so check the desktop-app access setting when using a browser or video-call program. An administrator may manage these controls, in which case some settings may be unavailable. See Microsoft’s instructions for camera app permissions.

Enable or disable a camera in Windows 11
Windows 11 has device-level camera controls in addition to app permissions:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
- Select the connected camera to disable it, or select a disabled camera to enable it.
Administrative access may be required. Depending on the device, disabling one camera can disable multiple cameras, and Windows may require a restart. Microsoft explains these controls in its Windows 11 camera settings guidance.

Check physical camera controls
A keyboard camera key, dedicated button, side switch, or built-in shutter may block the camera regardless of app permissions. Check your device for these controls and make sure the shutter is open or the switch is enabled. Their location and operation depend on the device; Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guidance covers common camera access issues.
What to expect on Windows 10
The camera privacy page lets you review device and app access, but Microsoft’s cited guidance does not describe a universal Windows 10 setting for forcing the on/off notification. Also note that Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Check Microsoft’s current camera privacy guidance and support information when deciding whether to keep using that version.
