Short answer: YouTube warns that a livestream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay at all. That makes stream length a leading explanation when a long gaming broadcast is missing from your channel, but it does not prove duration caused any particular failure. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived—not that every shorter stream is guaranteed to appear. YouTube’s archive guidance, reviewed October 3, 2026, recommends keeping replay-critical streams below that threshold and recording a local backup.
First, check whether the replay is actually missing
- In YouTube Studio, open Content → Live and look through past streams. YouTube documents this tab for accessing previous, current, and upcoming streams. YouTube’s encoder-streaming guide describes the Studio workflow for gameplay streams.
- If you find the stream, inspect its visibility setting. A replay that exists but is not publicly visible can look missing to viewers.
- If it is not listed, check whether you have a separately recorded local file. YouTube does not promise that an archive that was never captured can be restored.
Why streams over 12 hours are at risk
YouTube’s current archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours “may not be captured at all.” This applies to encoder-based broadcasts such as gaming streams. The threshold is a warning about archive capture, not a published failure rate or a guarantee that shorter streams will be saved. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

If having a replay matters, end the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours and start a separate stream if you need to continue. This reduces exposure to the documented long-stream risk; it cannot guarantee a successful archive.
Archive capture and live DVR are different
An archive is the recording YouTube may make available after the stream ends. DVR is a live-viewing feature that lets viewers pause and rewind while the broadcast is in progress. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Turning DVR off affects seeking during the live broadcast; YouTube says viewers can still watch a recording of the entire stream once it is available. YouTube’s DVR guidance explains the distinction.

Protect the replay with a local recording
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. For an encoder-based gaming stream, configure local recording before going live, then verify that the file is being written and its size continues to grow while you play. YouTube includes this file-integrity check in its live-streaming tips.
- No local file: a backup only helps if local recording was enabled and saved successfully.
- File stops growing or appears incomplete: check that the recording destination has free space and that the encoder is still recording; do not assume the file is usable until you test playback.
- Choosing storage: size capacity for your bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and how long you want to retain recordings. There is no responsible one-size-fits-all drive size without those details.
An external drive or SSD can hold a separately recorded backup, but storage cannot recreate a YouTube archive that was never saved.

If the replay still has not appeared
- Check YouTube Studio’s Content → Live list and the stream’s visibility rather than relying only on the public channel page.
- Look for and test the local recording, if one was configured.
- If your channel is eligible, contact Creator Support. YouTube’s current guidance does not promise recovery of an archive that was never captured.
A TeamYouTube community FAQ dated December 3, 2018, said a particularly long stream might take up to a day to process. That is historical advice, not a current processing-time guarantee, so it should not be treated as a deadline for when a missing replay will appear. Read the historical TeamYouTube FAQ.
