Playwright’s official documentation shows the basic workflow: open a browser, navigate to a URL, save a PNG, and close the browser. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser, then save this as screenshot.js:

Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
- Viewport: the default screenshot covers the current viewport. Set the viewport size on the page if the target layout depends on a particular width and height.
- Full page: use
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full.png', fullPage: true });to capture the full scrollable page. Pages that load content only while scrolling may need additional handling before capture. - One element: use a locator screenshot, such as

pathto get screenshot bytes in a buffer, which you can pass to an image-processing step or store yourself.

Wait for the page state you actually need
The example waits for networkidle, which may not be suitable for every page: analytics, ads, or other long-lived requests can prevent a page from becoming idle. If that happens, wait for a specific element or a short delay that matches the page’s behavior, then capture. For example:

When a manual screenshot is enough
For a one-off image, open the URL and use the screenshot feature built into your browser or operating system. Choose a full-page capture if you need content below the fold, and verify that the saved or exported file is PNG. The available controls vary by browser and operating system, so there is no universal menu path or guarantee that a built-in feature captures the whole page.

- Output: confirm PNG support and whether the image should represent CSS pixels or device pixels for your use.

Troubleshooting Playwright screenshots
The browser does not launch
Install the browser binary after installing the Playwright package with npx playwright install chromium. If your environment restricts browser execution or lacks required system dependencies, resolve those environment requirements before changing the screenshot code.

The screenshot is blank or missing content
Navigation completing does not always mean the page’s main content is ready. Wait for a meaningful selector to appear, and check that the selector matches the live page. If content appears only after scrolling or user interaction, add that step before taking the screenshot.

The capture is cut off
A default screenshot is viewport-sized. Use fullPage: true for the full scrollable page, or use a locator screenshot for a specific element. If a very long page has lazy-loaded sections, scroll through it before capturing.
Visual comparisons differ between runs
Use the same browser version, operating system, settings, hardware environment, and headless mode as the baseline where possible. Dynamic content, fonts, and page state can also change what appears in the image; wait for the same page state on each run.
