YouTube Live viewing is growing overall, but that does not mean every live category is growing: in Q2 2026, broad YouTube Live watch time rose while YouTube Gaming watch time fell. The distinction matters because live video on YouTube includes far more than gaming—from Q&As and classes to travel, food, crafts, and real-time events.
Is YouTube Live viewership actually growing?
Yes, according to recent measures—but the answer depends on which audience and metric you mean. YouTube reported that over 30% of its daily logged-in viewers watched live content on an average day in Q2 2025. That is YouTube’s own platform statistic, not an independent estimate of what caused people to watch. YouTube’s 2025 Live update described viewers watching everything from gameplay to Q&As.

A separate report from Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet recorded 12.97 billion hours watched on YouTube Live in Q2 2026, an 18.0% year-over-year increase. In the same report, YouTube Live represented 60.3% of tracked total livestream hours, compared with 58.8% in Q1 2026. These figures describe the report’s tracked-platform dataset, not every livestream watched worldwide. The Q2 2026 report was the first from Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet to include broad YouTube Live separately from YouTube Gaming, with historical data added for comparison.
Why can YouTube Live rise while YouTube Gaming falls?
They are different categories. Broad YouTube Live includes non-gaming streams as well as gameplay, while YouTube Gaming tracks gaming-related viewing. Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet counted 1.79 billion hours watched on YouTube Gaming in Q2 2026, down 18.9% year over year, even as broad YouTube Live grew.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
The report notes that IRL talk and variety are increasingly important to livestream viewing. Gaming-only figures therefore cannot stand in for the entire YouTube Live audience. A headline about rising YouTube Live and one about falling YouTube Gaming can both be accurate because they describe different slices of the service.
What may be attracting viewers to live streams?
Interaction in real time
Live chat lets viewers respond while an event is happening and gives creators a way to react to their audience. YouTube presents this shared experience and sense of community as part of live video’s appeal. Its Help page says that watching a live stream together can help build a deeper sense of community between creator and viewer. That is YouTube’s explanation, not a measurement showing how much interaction contributes to audience growth. YouTube Help: Why choose live
A wide range of formats
Livestreams cover more than games. YouTube points to Q&As, classes, workshops, travel, tours, food reviews, and crafts alongside gameplay. These formats let audiences follow a creator, subject, or event as it unfolds. The broader mix also helps explain why a broad live-viewing measure can move differently from gaming-only viewing.

More ways to discover and join a live
YouTube has announced simultaneous horizontal and vertical broadcasts with unified chat, mobile reactions to other live events or creators, and AI-generated highlights that can become Shorts. The company says these features are intended to help creators get discovered and extend engagement. Its announcement does not provide a measured audience lift attributable to any one of them, so they are best understood as platform efforts rather than proven causes of growth. Viewing contexts beyond a computer screen
YouTube says people watch a broad range of programming on connected TVs, including sports and events. In 2024, YouTube cited more than 1 billion hours of YouTube content watched on TVs globally per day. That figure concerns YouTube overall—not live viewing specifically—so it is useful context for how people use the platform, not evidence that television viewing caused Live to grow. How to read YouTube Live audience figures
Several metrics describe different things. YouTube’s Live Control Room distinguishes live views, concurrent viewers, peak concurrent viewers, chat rate, and average view duration. Post-stream Analytics includes total watch time and other measures. YouTube also notes that processed, despammed Analytics data can differ from Live Control Room figures. - Concurrent viewers: the number watching at the same time.
- Peak concurrent viewers: the highest simultaneous audience reached during the stream.
- Live views: the number of times the stream was viewed while it was live.
- Average view duration: average time viewers spent watching.
- Watch time: the accumulated time audiences spent watching, reported in hours in the cited market report.
For a fair comparison, use the same platform, content category, time period, geographic scope, and metric. A share of daily logged-in viewers, hours watched, and peak concurrent viewers are not interchangeable measures.
What the growth figures do—and do not—show
- They show different evidence at different scales: YouTube’s Q2 2025 figure is the company’s share of daily logged-in viewers who watched live on an average day; Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet report watch hours and tracked-platform share for Q2 2026.
- They show broad Live and Gaming diverging: broad YouTube Live grew year over year in Q2 2026 while YouTube Gaming declined.
- They do not establish a single cause: the cited material does not quantify the contribution of community, vertical video, mobile reactions, recommendation changes, or television viewing to Live’s growth.
- They do not describe all livestream viewing: the Q2 2026 cross-platform share is limited to the report’s tracked dataset.
If you want to keep a YouTube live channel running
Growing interest in live video may lead creators to try continuous programming, but maintaining a 24/7 stream from a local computer means keeping the streaming setup and connection running. For a do-it-yourself setup, YouTube’s live tools and a streaming application can send a live feed; a pre-recorded loop must be configured to repeat, and the computer and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud service loops the video, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
