Choose StreamYard if the live show itself—studio controls, branding and multistreaming—is your priority. Choose Riverside if you also want a strong recording and post-production workflow, including separate local participant tracks. Before committing, confirm that the features and destinations you need are available on your plan.
What to look for in live podcast software
The right choice depends on what happens before, during and after your broadcast. A live show needs a reliable way to bring in guests, control the production and reach its intended destinations. The recording may matter just as much: it could become an edited episode, clips or other material for later distribution.

- Live production: Consider branding, overlays, media playback and the controls available to a host or producer.
- Recording: Find out whether the service saves separate tracks for participants and what recording quality it offers. The live stream and the file you edit afterward do not have to meet the same technical needs.
- Guests and audience: Check how guests join, whether a producer can manage the show, and whether the audience can call in or have its chat displayed to the host.
- Destinations: List the platforms you need, then verify simultaneous streaming support and the destination limit on the specific plan you are considering.
- Post-production: Decide whether you want built-in editing, clips, transcripts or podcast publishing, or would rather use separate tools.
- Practical fit: Check current plan limits, pricing, and operating-system or browser support before choosing. Current like-for-like prices have not been established here.

StreamYard: consider it for a live-first workflow
StreamYard describes its approach as live-first, highlighting multistreaming, branded studio controls and local participant recordings. That description comes from StreamYard’s own comparison article, so treat it as product positioning rather than an independent head-to-head finding. Confirm the current features and limits for your plan before relying on a particular capability.
This may suit a show whose main challenge is running the broadcast: bringing people on, presenting a branded program and sending it to multiple destinations. Check the saved recordings and post-production tools against your needs rather than assuming the live workflow covers every editing or publishing task.

Riverside: consider it when the recording matters too
Riverside’s official product pages describe separate local audio and video tracks, video recording up to 4K and uncompressed audio. Its livestream page also describes HD multistreaming, guest invitations, producer controls, audience call-ins, centralized chat, overlays, branding, media assets and a teleprompter. Riverside presents editing and repurposing tools as part of its workflow. These are vendor claims, not independently verified performance results, and availability may vary by plan.
Riverside may be a sensible fit if you want to broadcast and retain recordings suited to later editing. The company describes the offer this way: “Broadcast your podcast live, while recording, to connect with more listeners in real-time.” That is Riverside’s own product copy, not an independent assessment.

OBS Studio: a desktop-production option to evaluate separately
OBS Studio is a customizable desktop live-production option, but the available product information is not detailed enough here for a podcast-specific feature comparison. If you are considering it, consult its official site and current setup documentation, then assess whether its workflow fits your guest, recording and destination requirements. Do not assume it offers the same browser-studio experience as the two services above.

How to choose for your show
- Write down the show’s destinations. Name every platform you intend to broadcast to and confirm that the plan supports those destinations simultaneously.
- Map the guest experience. Test the invitation and join process with the devices and browsers your guests are likely to use. If a producer will help, check what controls that person has.
- Decide what the saved episode must contain. If you need individual participant tracks, verify that the software records them and that the relevant plan includes the feature. Check recording resolution and audio format against your editing needs.
- List the audience interactions you need. Confirm whether viewers can call in, whether comments or chat are visible to the host, and who can moderate or manage them.
- Separate live features from post-production. Make a list of required edits, clips, transcripts and publishing steps. Check what is included and what may require a separate service.
- Verify the plan before paying. Compare the specific limits that matter to your show, including destinations and any recording or editing allowances. Review current prices and browser or operating-system support directly with the provider.
Run a test before your first public episode
A short rehearsal can expose workflow problems while there is still time to fix them. Use a private or otherwise non-public test where the platform permits it.
