YouTube’s archive guidance sets a 12-hour threshold: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 kirtan stream runs far beyond that limit, so YouTube does not promise one dependable, uninterrupted archive—or a particular way it will be divided. If you need reliable recordings, schedule shorter sessions and keep a local recording as backup.
What the 12-hour limit means for your archive
YouTube Help’s Archive live streams guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The guidance does not say that every stream over 12 hours will be split into parts, nor does it explain why a particular channel’s broadcast appeared in parts.
For a 24/7 kirtan stream, the practical takeaway is that a single continuous broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube archive. The 12-hour figure is YouTube’s documented threshold, not a guarantee that every shorter session will archive successfully and not a published failure rate.
Why an archive may appear in parts
YouTube’s general guidance establishes a duration caveat, but it does not identify the cause of each archive boundary in an individual account. A boundary could reflect a session ending and restarting, including an operator or encoder restart; check the actual stream runtimes and any available encoder or operator logs before drawing a conclusion. Do not assume that the archive parts prove a specific encoder caused the split.

To inspect the recordings YouTube has made, open YouTube Studio → Content → Live and review each archive’s details and visibility. You can change an archive’s visibility or delete it from this area.
Plan shorter sessions when you need archives
- Choose deliberate session lengths under 12 hours. End and restart the broadcast on a schedule rather than relying on one continuous 24/7 session. This applies YouTube’s duration guidance; it is not a guarantee about archive behavior.
- Check each resulting archive in Studio. After a session, use YouTube Studio → Content → Live to confirm whether an archive is available and whether its visibility is what you intend.
- Keep a separate local recording. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. For an encoder workflow, monitor that the local archive file is growing while the stream runs. The storage you need depends on your chosen bitrate, resolution, codec, and how long you retain recordings; YouTube does not specify a device or capacity.
- Compare runtimes with your logs if a boundary is unexpected. Check when the broadcast actually ended or restarted and review encoder or operator history. YouTube’s public guidance does not diagnose a specific channel’s archive parts.
Do not confuse archive recording with DVR
DVR controls whether viewers can pause or rewind during a live broadcast; it is separate from whether YouTube makes an archive afterward. YouTube says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers cannot rewind while the kirtan is live, inspect the DVR setting separately. Disabling DVR does not prevent viewers from seeing the full recording once it is available. See YouTube’s DVR on live streams guidance.
