Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDropped frames are a symptom, not a diagnosis. First check whether the problem is visible in your encoder preview or local recording; if those look healthy, investigate upload capacity and stability. Then match your encoder settings to YouTube’s current guidance and test the stream before relying on it.
Find out whether the problem is your encoder or your connection
Start with the output you can inspect locally. In your encoder, check the preview and any error messages. Review CPU load and, if you record locally, play back the archive. YouTube recommends these checks when a live stream looks or sounds poor. If the preview or recording is also degraded, investigate the source routing, encoder configuration, or computer load first. That pattern is a useful diagnostic clue, not proof of a single cause.

If the encoder output looks healthy while viewers see interruptions, check the outbound connection next. Ask whether multiple viewers are affected, particularly people watching over different internet connections. Reports from viewers on separate connections can point toward an encoder or stream-wide issue; a report from one viewer may instead involve that viewer’s playback connection. These patterns narrow the investigation but do not establish the cause on their own. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Test upload capacity and stability
Check upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube says the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For example, if your stream’s total bitrate is 10 Mbps, the connection needs capacity above that target with room to spare; a speed-test result is only a point-in-time measurement, not a guarantee that the same capacity will remain available throughout a broadcast.

Other devices and people sharing your network can reduce the upload capacity available to the encoder. Connectivity disruptions can also interrupt a stream even when a speed test looks adequate. YouTube’s streaming tips discuss bandwidth, shared connections, and reliability.
- Run an upload speed test while the network is being used in a way representative of your planned broadcast.
- If practical, test with a wired Ethernet connection to remove Wi-Fi as one possible variable. A cable is an optional diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
- If testing points to an unreliable connection or a service issue, contact your internet service provider.
Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate, and codec
A target bitrate that is too high for the available upload capacity can contribute to an unstable stream. A bitrate that does not match the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec may also cause configuration problems. YouTube’s current encoder table provides recommended rates by format; the examples below are platform recommendations, not assurances that your computer or connection can sustain them.

| Video format | Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | H.264 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table. Its guidance also distinguishes minimum from recommended rates, so check the current table for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one example as universal.

- Rate control: YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Codec and frame rate: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm that your encoder is sending a supported combination.
- Protocol: YouTube advises RTMPS. This is a security recommendation, not a standalone dropped-frame remedy.
- Stream key: Confirm that the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube stream and that the selected key is the one configured for that broadcast. Do not share the key publicly.
YouTube’s live-stream error reference covers configuration errors involving bitrate, unsupported codecs, and keyframes. If your connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom, lower the target bitrate or resolution and select the matching recommendation in YouTube’s current table.

Test before going live and monitor the broadcast
Make a test stream before an event, using movement and audio similar to what you plan to broadcast. YouTube recommends starting early enough to inspect the Live Control Room preview. During the event, watch stream health and any messages in the control room; if quality worsens, compare the local archive and encoder load with what viewers report. These checks can expose a problem while there is still time to adjust. See YouTube’s live-stream testing and monitoring tips.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview or local archive also looks or sounds wrong | Inspect source routing, encoder settings, and CPU load. |
| Local output looks healthy, but several viewers on different connections report trouble | Check outbound upload capacity and stability, then verify bitrate and other encoder settings. |
| Only one viewer reports a problem | Ask that viewer to check their playback connection; one report alone does not establish a stream-wide fault. |
| YouTube shows a bitrate, codec, or keyframe error | Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current settings table and error guidance. |
| Upload testing shows limited capacity or the connection fluctuates | Reduce the bitrate or resolution to a sustainable combination, check whether other users or devices are sharing the connection, and contact your ISP if a service issue remains. |
| A speed test looks adequate, but the stream still breaks up | Remember that a test measures capacity at one moment. Repeat it under representative network use and continue monitoring stability during a test stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, rather than encoding a live camera or desktop feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; each slot streams uploaded video at the quality supplied, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. For an Indian account, UPI is supported. Start your free StreamNeo day.
