What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A stable bitrate does not guarantee a clean-looking YouTube Live picture. The encoder may be using a bitrate that is too low for its codec, resolution, and frame rate; keyframes or GOP settings may be unsuitable; upload capacity may be tight; or the picture may look different after YouTube transcodes it for viewers. Check stream health and actual encoder output before changing settings—the title alone cannot identify one definite cause.
Diagnose the stage where the picture degrades
Compare what the encoder produces with what YouTube reports receiving and what viewers see. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple playback formats, so the encoder’s bitrate display is not a measurement of every stage from encoding to playback.

- Encoder output: Check the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and GOP mode actually being sent—not just the values configured in the encoder.
- YouTube ingestion: In Live Control Room, inspect stream health and record any warnings about bitrate, video output or delivery, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, or GOP.
- Viewer playback: Compare the Live Control Room preview with playback on another device or connection. If the encoder preview is clean but the viewer’s picture is not, that narrows the investigation to a later stage, but does not by itself prove which stage introduced the artifacts.
YouTube’s stream-health API guidance identifies distinct problems, including low or high bitrate, insufficient video delivery, incorrect resolution, long keyframe intervals, and open GOP. Treat those messages as diagnostic clues, not proof that a single setting explains every blocky frame. See YouTube’s live-stream health documentation and Live Broadcast documentation.

YouTube’s incoming live-encoding recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are recommendations, not guarantees of image quality. YouTube Help’s current guidance, checked October 3, 2026, gives these examples:
#1 Best Overall

- True Plug-and-Play Simplicity: No drivers, no fuss. Just connect the webcam to your computer via USB and you're ready to join calls in seconds. It offers seamless compatibility with all major platforms like Zoom, Teams, and Skype.
- Complete Privacy with a Physical Sliding Lens Cover: Worried about privacy? We've got you covered—literally. A built-in sliding lens cover physically blocks the camera when not in use, ensuring your private life stays private.
- Built-in Mic & Automatic Light Correction: Communicate clearly with the built-in noise-reducing microphone. The camera also intelligently adjusts the video brightness to make you look your best, even in poor lighting conditions.
| Incoming codec | Video mode | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
Use the recommendation for the incoming codec and mode you are actually sending; do not substitute upload-video recommendations or assume that all codecs need the same rate. The same YouTube Help page lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS live encoding, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate (CBR) guidance. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the complete settings table and any modes not shown here.
Verify keyframes and GOP settings
YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. A longer interval can trigger a health warning and affect how the stream is handled. Set the encoder to a two-second interval, then confirm that its actual output follows that setting.

Check whether the encoder uses open or closed GOP. YouTube’s API health guidance flags open GOP as unsupported. If you see an open-GOP warning, switch to closed GOP if your encoder offers that control, then run a test and confirm the warning clears. YouTube’s guidance identifies the issue but does not prescribe the UI path for every encoder; consult your encoder’s documentation for the exact control.
Make sure the connection has upload headroom
A steady encoder bitrate does not show how much upload capacity remains available at the network connection. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available, and says to include both primary and backup stream rates when calculating the total. Other users and devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to the stream.

- Measure or otherwise verify available outbound capacity while the stream is running, rather than relying only on the encoder’s configured rate.
- Account for the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams, if both are being sent.
- Check whether other devices or users are consuming upload bandwidth during the pixelation.
YouTube Help states: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Its streaming tips also explain bandwidth planning.
Run a representative test before changing a live event
- Start a private or unlisted test stream using the same codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings planned for the event.
- Include movement similar to the real content. A static image may not reveal blockiness that appears during fast motion.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages while the test runs.
- Compare that preview with playback on another viewer device or connection, noting where the image first appears blocky.
- Change one relevant setting at a time, then repeat the test so you can see whether the warning or visible result changes.
YouTube Help recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Match observations to the next check
| What you observe | What it supports checking next |
|---|---|
| Low- or high-bitrate warning | Compare the actual incoming bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate being sent. |
| Resolution, frame-rate, or insufficient-video warning | Confirm the encoder’s actual output mode and that video is being delivered consistently. |
| Long-keyframe or open-GOP warning | Check the actual keyframe interval and GOP mode; use a two-second interval and closed GOP. |
| Encoder preview is blocky | Investigate encoder output settings and available upload capacity before attributing the issue to viewer playback. |
| Encoder preview looks clean, but viewer playback is blocky | Compare Live Control Room and another viewer device or connection. This difference narrows the stage to investigate, but does not establish a unique cause. |
