But an endless workday is not simply a failure to switch off: blurred boundaries, unfinished workloads, and expectations to respond after hours can all keep work going. What helps depends on your preferred boundaries and how much control you have over your space, schedule, and availability.
Why work keeps spilling into home time
Home no longer signals that work is over
A commute, a workplace door, or leaving a desk can mark a transition. At home, those cues may be absent: the laptop is nearby, work messages arrive in the same space where you relax, and the work area may double as a dining table or bedroom. Work and nonwork can become harder to distinguish when they share both a location and a device.

Boundary management research treats separation and overlap as points on a continuum, not as a contest between a healthy and unhealthy way to work. Some people prefer to keep work and personal life distinct; others are comfortable with more integration. The fit between a person’s preference and their actual working conditions matters.

Availability can feel compulsory
In Eurofound’s 2023 survey of workers in Belgium, France, Italy, and Spain, respondents gave several reasons for answering work communications outside their scheduled hours: 82% felt responsible for their assignments, 75% wanted to stay on top of things, 75% perceived that a response was expected, 61% feared a negative impact if they did not respond, and 50% hoped replying would help career progression. These figures describe that report’s surveyed workers; they are not universal rates.

The same report found that 37% worked additional hours to complete tasks they had not finished during contractual working hours. If the day stretches because the workload does not fit into scheduled hours, a shutdown routine alone cannot resolve the cause.
After-hours work has been linked with distress
A 2025 study found an association between technology-assisted work after the workday and higher psychological distress. The result does not establish that after-hours work caused distress, but it reinforces why recurring spillover deserves attention as more than a time-management nuisance.

Choose boundaries that fit your work and home
A 2021 longitudinal study by Allen and colleagues followed 155 full-time workers who had newly shifted to predominantly home-based work during the COVID-19 period. In that sample, a preference for segmentation and having a dedicated office space were associated with greater work–nonwork balance. The findings do not prove that everyone needs a separate room: the participants were a specific, self-selected group working through a particular period.

| Approach | What it can look like | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Segmentation | Set work hours, keep work tools in a defined zone, and silence work channels after the day ends when your role permits. | It may suit people who want clear separation, but can be harder in a shared home or a job with unpredictable coverage needs. |
| Integration | Allow some planned overlap, such as adjusting the workday around family responsibilities or handling a brief work task at a chosen time. | It may suit people who prefer flexibility, but requires clear limits so occasional overlap does not become open-ended availability. |
Your household setup, control over your hours, and employer’s response-time expectations shape which boundaries are practical. Neither style is inherently right for everyone.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Experiments for making the end of the day visible
Participants in Allen and colleagues’ study described using time routines, marking a work area, keeping work items out of personal spaces, disconnecting, and putting tools away at day’s end. These are reported practices, not proven treatments or guarantees. Try a small change that fits your situation rather than attempting to adopt every tactic at once.
- Pick a realistic stopping time. Set an end time you can usually honor, taking any agreed coverage or schedule requirements into account.
- Write a shutdown list. Note what is finished, what remains, and the next step for each unfinished task. This gives you a handoff point instead of relying on memory to keep work active in your mind.
- Make a boundary with the space available. Use a consistent corner, clear a shared table when work ends, or put work items away. A separate office is not the only way to distinguish work from personal space.
- Close the work channel when your role allows it. Silence notifications or sign out at the agreed end of your day. If you are expected to cover urgent matters, clarify which channel and issue count as urgent.
- Repeat a transition cue. Leave the desk, change rooms, or take a short walk. The point is to create a reliable signal, not to add another obligation to your evening.
These experiments can help make boundaries more legible, but they cannot make an unreasonable workload or constant after-hours demands reasonable. If the pressure is coming from the job, address the job conditions too.

What to ask your manager or employer to change
Bring concrete patterns to the conversation: recurring evening requests, tasks routinely unfinished within contracted hours, unclear response expectations, or concern about consequences for not replying. Ask for an agreement on availability and a review of why work is spilling over, rather than treating personal discipline as the only remedy.

Agree which messages can wait until the next workday and what genuinely requires an after-hours response.
- Set practical communication limits. Specify when routine messages should be sent or delivered, and establish an escalation route for time-critical issues.
- Review workload and resources. Compare the assigned work with the hours, staffing, tools, and training available to complete it. Repeatedly unfinished tasks may point to a capacity problem.
- Ask managers to model the boundary. Manager behavior can reinforce or undermine written expectations; clarify whether late messages require a response or are simply sent at a convenient time.
- Make any disconnect policy usable. A written policy needs awareness, training, practical limits on after-hours connection, workload review, and regular monitoring to affect day-to-day expectations.
Eurofound’s 2023 survey reported that 92% of surveyed workers at companies with a right-to-disconnect policy reported better work–life balance, compared with 80% at companies without one. This is an association in the report, not evidence that a policy alone caused the difference. The report also stresses that implementation and workload practices matter.

A 2025 study discusses leadership behavior, clear roles, adequate resources, training, and disconnection routines as possible preventive practices. These are organizational considerations, not proof that any one measure will prevent psychological distress.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The boundary-management study offers longitudinal evidence, but its pandemic-era sample of workers newly adapting to predominantly home-based work limits how broadly its findings can be applied. Eurofound’s company-level survey covers four European countries; its results should not be generalized automatically to other places or legal systems. The 2025 study reports associations rather than causal proof. Together, the evidence supports treating work-home boundaries as both a personal-fit question and a workplace-design issue.
