Windows 11 may appear to reset your default browser for several different reasons: an organization may reapply settings on a managed PC, Windows 11 in S mode keeps Edge as the default, or a Windows feature may open Edge without using your ordinary browser associations. First check which link or file type changed and where the link was opened; those details help distinguish a real change from expected Windows behavior.
Check whether your default actually changed
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps, then find your preferred browser. Windows lets you set defaults for an app and choose an app for individual file types or link types. Microsoft’s instructions for changing default apps describe these options.
- Review the associations shown for the browser. If only one link or file type is assigned to Edge, that does not establish that every browser association has changed.
- Test an ordinary web link and, if relevant, a browser-related file type. Note which one opens in Edge and where you launched it from.
Why links may still open in Edge
A Windows feature launched the link
Some Windows surfaces do not follow the ordinary browser association. Microsoft says web results from Windows Search open in Edge, and some Windows apps and widgets rely on Edge. If Edge opens from one of these features, check Default apps separately before concluding that your browser default was reset. Microsoft explains Edge’s relationship with Windows features.

Only one association changed
Windows handles defaults at the app, file-type, and link-type level. A browser may therefore open for one kind of link but not another. Review the relevant entries in Settings > Apps > Default apps rather than treating one unexpected launch as proof that all defaults changed. Microsoft’s default-app guidance covers choosing associations individually.
Check for device restrictions
Work- or school-managed PC
An organization can configure default associations through Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM). On a managed device, ask your IT administrator whether a policy is setting or reapplying browser associations. The existence of a policy does not by itself prove that it is causing the change on your PC; the administrator can check the effective configuration. Microsoft documents default-browser deployment options for managed devices.

Windows 11 in S mode
Microsoft says Edge is always the default browser while Windows 11 is in S mode. Setting another browser as the default requires switching out of S mode, and Microsoft says that switch is permanent: the device cannot return to S mode afterward. This is an S mode restriction, not evidence of a recurring reset bug. Microsoft’s S mode FAQ explains the switch.
Does Windows Update reset browser defaults?
The Microsoft documentation cited here explains how to change default apps and how administrators can configure associations, but it does not establish that Windows updates routinely reset everyone’s default browser. Without checking the affected PC, the cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone. Avoid attributing the change to an update, registry corruption, or a cleanup tool unless there is evidence on that device.

When to troubleshoot Edge itself
If Edge is crashing, failing to load pages, or otherwise malfunctioning, use Microsoft’s separate Edge troubleshooting guidance, which covers updating or repairing the browser. That guidance addresses Edge problems; it does not say that repairing Edge fixes a Windows default-association change.

A quick way to narrow down the cause
- Personal PC, ordinary link, several associations changed: Review the affected entries in Default apps and set the preferred browser for each relevant type.
- Work or school PC, settings keep changing: Ask IT to check whether Group Policy or MDM is applying default associations.
- Windows 11 in S mode: Edge remains the default unless you permanently switch out of S mode.
- Edge opens only from Search, a widget, or an Edge-dependent app: Check the ordinary browser associations separately; that launch may not reflect a general reset.
Microsoft’s stated aim is for people to control their default applications through Windows settings and system dialogs. In a March 17, 2023 Windows Experience Blog post, Microsoft wrote that it wants people “to be able to control their default applications such as their default browser through consistent, clear and trustworthy Windows provided system dialogs and settings.”
