Why Your Wi-Fi Extender Keeps Disconnecting—and How to Fix It

A disconnected device may point to the extender, its router link, the router, or the client itself. Use these checks to isolate the cause before resetting or replacing hardware.

A Wi-Fi extender dropout does not necessarily mean the extender is faulty. First find out what has disconnected: your device may still be connected to the extender even though the extender has lost its link to the router, or the router or internet service may be down. Work through the checks below in order before resetting or replacing anything.

First, identify what is disconnecting

When the problem happens, check three things: whether your phone or computer still shows a Wi-Fi connection to the extender, whether the extender’s lights or app show a connection to the router, and whether devices connected directly to the router can still reach the internet. An extender relays the router’s connection; it does not maintain internet access independently. TP-Link explains the distinction.

  • If router-connected devices also lose internet, troubleshoot the router or internet service first.
  • If the client stays connected to the extender but internet access disappears, check the extender’s link to the router.
  • If just one client drops while others work, focus first on that device’s Wi-Fi connection or configuration.

During a dropout, note the affected device’s IP address, default gateway, and DNS settings. These details can help support staff identify whether the issue is limited to the client or affects the wider connection.

Update firmware and retest

Check the manufacturer’s support page for firmware for the exact extender model and hardware revision, then install it using the model’s instructions. Router firmware and the affected device’s Wi-Fi driver or operating-system updates may also be relevant, depending on the symptoms. Retest after each update so you can tell whether it changed the behavior; an update is a sensible check, not a guaranteed fix. See TP-Link’s troubleshooting guidance and ASUS’s connectivity guidance.

Test the extender’s placement

An extender needs a usable signal from the router as well as enough reach to serve the area where coverage is weak. Temporarily place it closer to the router and observe whether the connection becomes stable. If it does, distance, obstacles, or a weak router-to-extender link may be contributing.

  1. Move the extender nearer to the router and let it reconnect.
  2. Check whether the connection remains stable for the devices that had been dropping.
  3. If it does, move it gradually toward the coverage target, checking stability at each position. Keep it within usable wireless range of the router.

A position roughly halfway between the router and the weak-coverage area is a starting point, not a rule: the extender still needs a reliable router signal. TP-Link’s placement advice and NETGEAR’s extender guidance both emphasize the importance of router signal at the extender’s location.

Check interference and band behavior

Try moving the router or extender away from barriers and nearby electronics, then compare the connection. The best Wi-Fi band depends on the distance, surroundings, and what the extender supports. In general, 2.4 GHz reaches farther, while 5 GHz can offer higher speeds over shorter distances. ASUS describes these band trade-offs.

Test band steering only if the router supports it

Some routers automatically steer devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. TP-Link documents a specific case where band-steering behavior can contribute to extender instability. If your router’s documentation and extender setup make this relevant, test with band steering disabled and separate names for the two bands, following the router maker’s instructions. Change one setting at a time and restore the original settings if the test does not help. This is a model-dependent diagnostic, not a universal fix. TP-Link’s explanation and suggested test cover that scenario.

Check whether the problem is limited to one device

If only one phone, laptop, or other client drops, toggle that device’s Wi-Fi off and back on, then check for an operating-system or Wi-Fi driver update. Record its IP address, default gateway, and DNS when the issue occurs. If several clients lose access at once, the extender’s router link or the router itself becomes more likely, but that pattern is a clue rather than proof.

Reset or replace only after the basic checks

A factory reset can erase the extender’s settings and require setup again. Reserve it for a persistent problem after recording the current configuration, and use the reset and setup instructions for your exact model.

TP-Link WiFi Extender with Ethernet Port, Dual Band 5GHz/2.4GHz, Up to 44% More Bandwidth Than Single Band, Covers Up to 1200 Sq.ft and 30 Devices, Signal Booster Amplifier Supports OneMesh(RE220)
  • Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)

Consider a replacement only if the extender continues to fail close to a stable router, after firmware and basic setup checks. Before choosing a Wi-Fi range extender, check compatibility with your router and its network or security configuration, the bands you need, and whether it works with any mesh system already in use. Compatibility with Google Wifi or Nest Wifi, for example, depends on the specific device and how it extends the network; Google explains the limitations. A higher advertised speed or coverage figure will not fix an upstream router or internet-service problem, so diagnose the source before buying.
