If your domain displays cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi, its request may be reaching a server that has no matching cPanel virtual-host configuration—or its DNS may point somewhere different from the IP assigned to that virtual host. Check the exact address you opened, then compare the domain’s DNS destination with its hosting account and server configuration. If those appear correct, ask your hosting provider or server administrator to investigate.
First, identify which address shows the page
Check whether you see the default page at your domain, its www version, a subdomain, the server’s IP address, or its hostname. These are not necessarily configured the same way.

cPanel explains that visiting the main server IP can load the hostname virtual host. In the setup it describes, the hostname’s document root is /var/www/html, and index.html there may redirect to the default page. So seeing it at the server IP or hostname alone does not prove that a separate domain’s website is misconfigured. cPanel’s explanation of the default page at a server IP covers that case.

Check the domain’s DNS and cPanel configuration
For a domain that should display a website, confirm that its DNS resolves to the intended hosting server. Then verify that the domain is configured on the expected cPanel account and has a virtual host associated with the correct IP address.
#1 Best Overall
cPanel identifies two common causes: the domain resolves to an IP address different from the one in its virtual-host setting, or the server has no virtual host configured for the domain. Either can send requests to cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi. See cPanel’s article on this redirect.
- Make sure you are checking the same hostname that fails, including whether it is the
wwwversion or a subdomain. - Compare that hostname’s DNS destination with the hosting server you intend to use.
- Confirm the domain belongs to the expected cPanel account and is configured for the correct server IP.
If the settings look right, contact the host
If the DNS destination and cPanel account assignment appear correct but the domain still shows the page, ask your hosting provider or server administrator to check the server’s virtual-host configuration. The cause cannot be determined from the default page alone; it depends on the domain’s DNS and server setup.

Do not edit server configuration files unless you administer the server. After the provider confirms any changes, revisit the affected hostname. A cached result can sometimes complicate what you see, but the cPanel articles cited here do not prescribe a cache-clearing procedure or establish it as a fix.
