Why Your VPN May Drain Battery—and How to Check and Fix It

VPN battery drain varies by device and workload. Tests show little detectable standby impact in one Android study, but different results during browsing and streaming.

Yes, a VPN can use extra battery, but there is no dependable percentage that applies to every device. In one test of four Android phones, standby impact was negligible or undetectable, while continuous web browsing shortened measured runtime by 1.13% to 17.56%, depending on the phone. A separate VPN-provider test found larger battery-level drops during a one-hour Netflix session. Those results came from different devices and methods, so they are not interchangeable estimates of what your phone will lose.

What the tests show—and what they don’t

Battery use depends on the device, what you are doing, and the conditions of the connection. A connected VPN can remain active in the background, and it routes network traffic through the VPN service. The tests below show why standby, browsing, and streaming need to be considered separately.

Standby and web browsing on four Android phones

GSMArena tested NordVPN on a Motorola Edge 50 Pro, Realme GT 6, Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G, and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. It repeated each test a couple of times. For standby, it found the difference so small or negligible that it could not detect it; reported full-battery standby times were close, though not identical, on three phones, and identical on the Redmi. Its active test involved web browsing with page loading, scrolling, and frequent screen interaction at a stated brightness of 200 nits.

Phone Reported reduction in full runtime during continuous browsing with VPN
Motorola Edge 50 Pro 1.13%
Realme GT 6 3.75%
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra 10.57%
Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G 17.56%

These are full-runtime differences in that test, not percentages to subtract from every user’s daily battery life. The results are specific to the four phones, NordVPN, and the test conditions. GSMArena’s test details.

One-hour Netflix test on three devices

ExpressVPN says it charged each device to 100%, connected to its Los Angeles server, streamed Netflix for 60 minutes, then turned the VPN off, recharged the device to 100%, and streamed for another 60 minutes. Notifications and system activity remained present in both runs. It tested an iPhone 15 with iOS 17.3.1, a Google Pixel 6A with Android 14, and a MacBook Pro with macOS Sonoma.

Device and software reported Battery drop with VPN on Battery drop with VPN off Difference between reported drops
iPhone 15, iOS 17.3.1 24 percentage points 10 percentage points 14 percentage points
Google Pixel 6A, Android 14 35 percentage points 21 percentage points 14 percentage points
MacBook Pro, macOS Sonoma 37 percentage points 18 percentage points 19 percentage points

The final column is the simple difference between the two reported one-hour battery drops. It is not proof that every VPN adds that much drain. ExpressVPN describes the impact as “minimal,” but its table shows substantial total battery use during the streaming hour; both facts belong in context. This was the VPN provider’s own test, not an independent comparison of multiple providers. ExpressVPN’s test and method.

Older academic result

A University of California dissertation reported 13% battery use without a VPN and 16% with its AntMonitor Client-Server implementation in a simulated typical-day Wi-Fi test. The authors called the additional three percentage points modest for that scenario. This 2016-era research is historical evidence that overhead can be measured, not a current estimate for commercial VPN apps. University of California dissertation.

Why your result may differ

The modern tests do not measure the same thing: one compares battery percentage after video streaming, while the other measures standby and continuous browsing runtime. They also involve different providers, hardware, software, networks, and measurement methods. Battery-screen attribution to a VPN app does not establish that encryption alone caused all the displayed use.

For a useful comparison, distinguish:

  • Standby from active use: the Android test found very little detectable standby difference, but measured varying effects during continuous browsing.
  • Workload: browsing and streaming keep the device busy in different ways.
  • Device and battery condition: phone model, age, and battery health can affect observed runtime.
  • Network: Wi-Fi, cellular signal strength, and connection quality may change power use.
  • Measurement: battery percentage after an hour is not the same measure as full runtime.

Android Developers says, “Android can start a VPN service when the device boots and keep it running while the device is on.” That describes platform behavior, not a battery-test result. Android Developers: VPNs.

How to find out whether the VPN is the cause

  1. Compare on and off under matched conditions. Note battery level over the same period and activity with the VPN on and off. Keep brightness, network, apps, and location consistent; repeat the comparison if practical. This paired approach makes your result more useful than app battery attribution alone.
  2. Separate standby from active-use drain. Compare a period when the device is idle with a period of browsing or streaming. A difference limited to active use points to a different pattern than a device losing charge mainly while idle.
  3. Check the connection. ExpressVPN advises that weak cellular signal and difficult network conditions can increase battery load. Treat this as the provider’s guidance, not as an effect isolated by the cited tests.
  4. Review background activity and updates. ExpressVPN recommends reducing unnecessary background apps and keeping the VPN app current. The reviewed sources do not quantify how much either action saves.
  5. Try another protocol only if your VPN offers one. Compare it on your own device. ExpressVPN says its Lightway protocol uses less battery than alternatives; that is a vendor claim, not an independent cross-provider protocol ranking.

Options for home use and an aging battery

Router-based VPN for a home network

For use at home across connected devices, a VPN-capable router is an alternative setup: ExpressVPN says its Aircove router handles VPN encryption and decryption for devices using its Wi-Fi. This is a vendor-described mechanism, not a portable phone fix, and the cited sources do not quantify a battery saving.

Battery health is a separate diagnosis

If a device’s battery is old or worn, assess its health separately from VPN use. Replacing a worn battery addresses general battery capacity, not a VPN-specific fault. Any replacement must be compatible with the exact device.

Turning off the VPN can change your network protection

Do not disable security protections as the default battery fix. If you turn off a VPN temporarily to troubleshoot, traffic is no longer carried through that VPN tunnel. Device settings can affect what happens if the connection drops or the VPN is disabled: Android’s always-on VPN option can block connections that do not use the VPN, while Apple describes always-on VPN for supervised devices as the only internet connection, with traffic exclusions configurable in its profile.
