Windows’ Quick removal and Better performance choices apply to an external storage device, not to an individual motherboard USB port. If the Policies tab is missing, check the connected drive’s properties. If a port is failing to detect devices, troubleshoot that as a separate hardware or driver issue.
What Windows’ removal policy controls
Quick removal and Better performance are media-removal policies for external storage, including USB drives and Thunderbolt-enabled external drives. They are not settings assigned to a motherboard port.

| Policy | How it handles writes | What to do before disconnecting |
|---|---|---|
| Quick removal | Avoids disk-write caching, prioritizing readiness for removal. This can reduce performance. | Microsoft says the device can be removed without using Safely Remove Hardware. |
| Better performance | Can cache writes to improve performance. | Use Safely Remove Hardware before disconnecting, so pending operations can finish and the risk of data loss is reduced. |
Microsoft says Quick removal has been the default policy beginning with Windows 10 version 1809. The policy can be set for each external device and remains in effect when that device is disconnected and then reconnected to the same computer port. Microsoft documents the policies and their behavior.
Where to find the setting for an external drive
Connect the external storage device whose policy you want to inspect. In Windows, open File Explorer, identify the drive, then use Disk Management to open the drive’s properties and select the Policies tab:

- Open Disk Management and identify the external drive. Confirm the correct drive before changing any settings.
- Right-click the drive label and select Properties.
- Select Policies to view the available removal policy.
If you do not see Policies there, open the drive’s properties through its hardware entry instead:
- In the drive’s Properties window, select Hardware.
- Select the external removable drive from the listed disk drives.
- Open that device’s Properties, then look for Policies.
Tab arrangement can differ across recent Windows versions. Microsoft’s instructions for locating the policy describe both routes.

If one USB port does not detect a device
A missing Policies tab does not show that a particular motherboard port is faulty. The tab concerns the connected storage device’s removal policy; a port that does not recognize a device is a separate detection problem.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the port and cable for visible damage, and reconnect the device securely.
- Test the same device on a computer with a working port. If possible, test a known-working USB storage device in the suspect port.
- If the problem continues, check the connected device’s software and the chipset drivers recommended for your exact motherboard model.
- For further Windows diagnosis, inspect the device and USB controller entries in Device Manager. USB ports connect through host-controller hardware, but the relevant entries and next steps can vary by system.
These are general checks, not a diagnosis of a particular machine. The motherboard model, Windows build, port type, connected device, and exact location where the setting was expected are not specified. MSI’s general motherboard guidance covers basic USB port and cable checks; Microsoft explains the USB host-controller relationship in its Windows USB host-side driver documentation.

- 【7 ports PCIe USB card】 There is a 2-phase independent power supply module, which can feed one interface per output port to escape power shortage. Can operate without an external or auxiliary power supply; the seven interfaces operate independently and do not affect each other. Seven USB 3.0 Type A ports can be added externally to the PC case. Note: Not compatible with PS3/PS4.
- 【High Speed Transmission】USB3.0 theoretical speed up to 5Gbps, provides 10 times faster transmission speed than USB2.0. This usb expansion card enables quick access to files and transfer of HD movies, photos, music, etc.
- 【Stable power supply】The usb pcie card adopt NEC720201&NEC720210 chip. The USB interface can supply 5V2A power to external devices. Solid capacitors with good performance are used for low impedance, low temperature stability, and high temperature wave resistance.
- 【7 independent solid capacitors】Each interface has a stable voltage solid capacitor to ensure a stable power supply. The dielectric material of the solid capacitors is made of conductive polymer material, which has the advantages of high stability, long life, and low ESR (faster charging and discharging speed).
- 【Wide compatibility】 PCI-E X1 X4 X8 X16 compatible. Note: Not compatible with older PCI, backward compatible with USB 2.0 / 1.1, 64-bit and 32-bit Windows 11 / 10 / 8 / 7 / XP / Linux, not Mac compatible. Note: WIN8 and WIN10/11 users do not need to install the drive; XP and WIN7 users can download, unzip, install, and complete. (The corresponding installation directory for CD is DRIVERSǐ201R30230.EXE.)
Do not confuse removal policy with driver removal policy
Windows also documents a driver-level DEVICE_REMOVAL_POLICY enumeration. Its values describe whether a device is typically not removed, removed orderly, or removed suddenly. That driver property is distinct from the Quick removal and Better performance options for external storage; it is not a per-port version of those choices. Microsoft’s DEVICE_REMOVAL_POLICY reference describes the driver-level property.
