A video doorbell that keeps going offline usually has a weak connection at the front door, a router or internet problem, changed Wi-Fi details, or insufficient power. Start by checking whether other devices are offline too; then check the doorbell’s power, signal and app status. Restart the router and reconnect through the manufacturer’s app before considering a factory reset, which can risk saved video history.
First, find out whether the problem is the doorbell or the whole network
Open the doorbell’s app and note what it reports: an offline status, an error code, lag in live video, or gaps in recorded clips. These symptoms can point to different problems, so keep the exact message handy when following the manufacturer’s support steps. Ring users can check Device Health in the Ring app; Google’s Nest troubleshooting covers offline status, unavailable live video and gaps in video history.

Next, test internet access on another phone or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi, with cellular data turned off. If that device cannot get online either, check for a home power interruption, router or modem trouble, an internet-provider outage, or a service interruption. If other devices work normally, focus on the doorbell, its power, its Wi-Fi connection and any router settings specific to it.

Check the doorbell’s power before treating it as a Wi-Fi fault
A doorbell can have connection or video problems if its battery is low or its wired power supply is inadequate. Check the power or battery status in the app. Recharge a battery model according to its manufacturer’s instructions. For a wired model, check that its power is on and that the required power source and wiring are connected. Use the instructions for the exact model; if you are unsure about electrical work, consult a qualified professional.
Google notes that insufficient power can affect Wi-Fi connection and video quality during wired Nest Doorbell setup. Its guidance for Nest doorbell chime issues also describes charging a low-battery Nest Doorbell (battery) with the specified equipment. Neither a charging cable nor a wiring adjustment is a universal fix: use the power guidance for your own model.

Improve Wi-Fi where the doorbell is mounted
A router can provide a good connection indoors but a weak or unreliable one at an exterior door. Test Wi-Fi at the doorbell’s actual location, then reduce obstacles or interference and move the router or access point closer if practical. Google Home and Nest Help recommends moving the doorbell and router closer to improve the signal; its wired Nest Doorbell installation guidance also covers interference, router restarts and the effect of weak signal on video.
For a Ring device, the official UK support page suggests checking signal strength and, where available, trying another 2.4 GHz network. Band support and app options depend on the model and market, so check the instructions for your specific doorbell instead of forcing it onto a particular band. Ring also notes that having multiple routers can cause connection problems.

A Wi-Fi extender or mesh access point may help if the problem is weak coverage specifically near the door. Ring mentions Chime Pro for compatible Ring devices and suggests considering an upgraded Wi-Fi setup; verify compatibility for your model before buying anything. An extender cannot fix an internet-provider outage, low device power, an interrupted service, or an incorrect Wi-Fi password.
Restart the router, then reconnect after network changes
If the internet works for other devices but the doorbell remains offline, restart the router or modem and allow the doorbell time to reconnect. If several devices lost access at once, check your provider or relevant service status as well as the router.

A replacement router, changed network name (SSID), or new password can leave a doorbell using old Wi-Fi details. Reconnect it through the manufacturer’s app and the procedure for that product. Google says most Nest products may reconnect to a replacement router if the network name and password remain unchanged. If you changed either, follow Google’s camera and doorbell Wi-Fi network instructions for the specific device and app flow.
Some network names are hidden. Google’s wired Nest Doorbell setup guidance includes entering a hidden network’s SSID manually. Do this only if it applies to your network and the device’s instructions support it.

Use an error-specific fix before resetting the doorbell
If power, internet, signal and Wi-Fi details appear correct but the doorbell still disconnects, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the error message or connection symptom shown in the app. Ring’s UK support guidance lists app options such as Reconnect or Change Network where available, along with checks for power, signal, network health and router setup. Menu names and available features vary by model and market.
Keep a factory reset as a last resort, after simpler checks and the manufacturer’s error-code steps. Reset procedures are not interchangeable between brands or models. Before removing a camera or doorbell from an app or resetting it, save any recordings you need: Google warns that some removal and reset flows can permanently delete recorded video history.
When weather may explain a temporary outage
Extreme heat or direct sun can temporarily disable some functions on certain Nest doorbells, including Wi-Fi, to prevent overheating. Google documents this as a model- and environment-specific behavior, not a general explanation for every recurring disconnection. If the interruption coincides with hot conditions, consult the guidance for the exact model and check whether service returns as the device cools.
