If your TV won’t recognize a USB drive, first select the USB device in the TV’s input or media interface, then connect it directly to another USB port. If it still does not appear, check the exact TV model’s supported drive types, file systems, and capacity. A drive that appears but will not open or play files has a separate file or format compatibility problem.
First, identify what the TV is failing to do
“My TV won’t read my USB stick” can describe two different problems:

- The drive is not detected: The TV shows no USB device or storage source. Check the TV interface, port, connection, and drive compatibility.
- The drive appears, but its contents do not: The TV may not support the drive’s file system, folder structure, or particular files.
- Folders or files appear, but playback fails: The drive is recognized; investigate media compatibility instead. Sony’s model- and version-specific help guide notes that some files may not play even when they use supported formats: Sony’s guide to playing content stored on a USB device.
Work through these checks in order
1. Select the USB device on the TV
Plug in the drive, then open the TV’s Input or External Input menu, or its Home or Media Player interface, and select the USB storage device. The exact wording and path vary by model. LG’s support guides direct users to select the USB input and open the device through the Media Player; Sony’s cited guide likewise describes choosing the device in the TV’s media interface.

2. Connect directly and try another port
Remove any USB hub or extension and connect the drive directly to the TV. The cited Sony guide says USB hubs are unsupported in the guide’s model/version context. If the TV has more than one USB port, try another one.
For an external hard drive, check the TV’s manual for the correct port and power requirements. Samsung Hong Kong’s guidance for certain QLED and SUHD models recommends the USB HDD port for an external hard drive; that advice is regional and model-scoped, not a rule for every Samsung TV. LG’s cited US support page gives a maximum external-hard-drive rating of 5 V and 500 mA for its support context. Check your own model’s specifications rather than applying either figure universally. 3. Compare with a known-good USB drive
If you have another compatible drive, try it in the same port and select it in the TV menu. A small-capacity USB flash drive is a useful comparison because it can help distinguish a problem with the original drive from an issue with the TV’s interface or port. You do not need to buy another drive if you already have one known to work with the TV.
LG recommends a USB memory device of 32 GB or less on the two cited US support pages. Treat that as LG’s recommendation for its stated support context—not a universal limit for other brands or models. Check the manual for your TV before choosing a comparison drive.

4. Verify the TV’s supported file system and capacity
A TV may not detect a drive if its file system or capacity is outside that model’s supported specifications. LG’s cited guidance recommends FAT32 or NTFS and a USB memory device of 32 GB or less. Other manufacturers and models may differ, so consult the manual or official support page for the exact TV before changing the drive’s format.
5. Format only after backing up the drive
Formatting erases the drive’s contents. Copy important files somewhere else first, then confirm which file systems your TV supports. Samsung Hong Kong suggests connecting an unrecognized or corrupted device to a PC and formatting it, but its page applies to regional, model-specific guidance; do not treat that as a universal fix. If the files matter and you cannot back them up, do not format the drive.

6. Eject the drive before removing it
When the TV offers an eject option, use it before unplugging the drive. LG warns that removing USB storage without ejecting can cause problems. Menu wording varies, so check the TV’s interface or manual if you cannot find the option.

If the TV sees the drive but not the files
Once the device appears in the TV interface, the problem is no longer basic drive detection. Check the TV’s documentation for supported file systems and media formats, and see whether the issue affects every file or just one. A particular file may fail to display or play even when its format is listed as supported; Sony notes this limitation in its cited guide. Avoid reformatting a drive just because one file will not play.

When to contact the TV maker
If multiple known-good, compatible drives fail in every USB port after you select the USB source, consult the manufacturer’s support page or service guidance for your exact model. These checks can narrow down the cause, but the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal diagnosis of hardware failure.
