Find the TV’s exact model number, check its official manual or support page for USB storage compatibility, and compare that list with the drive’s current format before you reformat anything.
1. Find the TV’s exact model number
Check the product label on the back of the TV, or look in its Settings menu for About, Product Information, or a similar device-details screen. Use the complete model code—not just the brand or series—when searching the manufacturer’s support site. Compatibility tables can be limited to particular models, model years, or operating systems; Sony explicitly notes that its supported-file-system table applies to specific products and provides a model-family overview (Sony support).

2. Look up USB storage support for that model
Search the manufacturer’s official support site using the full model number, or open the manual for that model. Look for sections called USB storage, USB playback, external HDD, or similar. Note which file systems are supported and what the support applies to: playing media, recording, or using a drive as device storage are different functions.

Do not assume FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS is universally accepted. Sony’s model-family table shows that support varies, including model families where exFAT is not listed. LG guidance also illustrates why model-specific instructions matter: its USB viewing article recommends FAT32 or NTFS, while its broader troubleshooting discussion lists FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS. The recommendation in one article should not be treated as a promise for every model.

3. Check the USB drive’s current file system
On Windows, Sony’s instructions are to open File Explorer, right-click the USB drive, choose Properties, and read the File system entry on the General tab. Compare that value with the list for your TV model. Check before changing the drive: formatting erases the data on it, so copy anything you want to keep to another location first.
4. If the TV does not recognize the drive
A mismatched file system is only one possible cause. LG also identifies insufficient power and some storage devices that may not operate smoothly as potential issues. Try connecting the drive directly to the TV rather than through a USB extension cable, and follow the TV’s instructions for safely ejecting storage. If a drive requires more power than the TV’s USB port provides, its format alone will not solve the problem.

5. If the TV sees the drive but will not play a file
Drive recognition and media playback are separate compatibility checks. A TV may support the drive and its file system but still be unable to play a particular video, audio, or photo file. Consult the same model’s supported media formats and codecs, then check whether the file’s container, codec, and other relevant characteristics are listed. Sony notes that USB storage support does not guarantee playback of every file (Sony USB storage guidance).

External hard drives: check capacity and intended use
For an external HDD, check the TV’s model-specific requirements for capacity and power as well as file system. Sony publishes limits that vary by file system and use case for the applicable Android TV models. Its guidance lists playback limits of 2 GB for FAT16, 2 TB for FAT32, and 16 TB for exFAT and NTFS; device-storage use has separate, lower limits. These are specifications for the Sony model context covered by that guidance, not universal limits for TVs (Sony BRAVIA/Android TV HDD compatibility).
