A Mac may fail to recognize a dock, display, or USB device because the Mac’s port, adapter, cable, power supply, accessory approval, or display limits do not match the setup. Start by identifying the exact Mac and the failing device, then test each link in the connection separately. USB-C describes a connector shape; it does not guarantee Thunderbolt or video support.
Start with the Mac, port, and exact symptom
Before changing settings or replacing hardware, write down the Mac model and year or chip, macOS version, dock or adapter model, the Mac port in use, the cable type, and the model and input of any display. Note which dock ports work and which do not. Apple’s external-display guide directs users to check their Mac’s specifications because supported display counts and modes vary by model.

Separate the symptom into one of these cases: the display is missing, a USB peripheral is missing, an accessory charges but cannot transfer data, or macOS reports a power problem. Those symptoms point to different parts of the connection path.
Check whether the Mac port supports the connection
USB-C and Thunderbolt can use similar-looking connectors, but they are not interchangeable capabilities. Check the Mac’s specifications and the symbols by its ports instead of judging by connector shape. Apple’s adapter guide covers adapters for Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB-C Macs, and notes: “If your Mac only has one port, it doesn’t support Thunderbolt connections.”

For a display adapter, confirm it supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4, as applicable to the Mac and display. Match the adapter output to the monitor’s actual input—such as HDMI or DisplayPort—and verify the vendor’s compatibility details. An HDMI-shaped plug alone does not establish that the Mac port, adapter, cable, and display support the required video mode.
If an external display is not detected
- Check the display itself. Turn it on and select the input connected to the Mac or dock. Reseat the cable at both ends and make sure it is plugged into the intended port.
- Ask macOS to detect it. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Hold the Option key to reveal Detect Displays, then select it.
- Reset the connection. Unplug and reconnect the display, then try putting the Mac to sleep and waking it.
- Verify the signal path. Confirm that the cable and adapter support the display connection you are using, and follow the display maker’s setup instructions.
- Check the Mac’s display limits. Consult the specifications for the exact Mac model to confirm it supports the number of displays, resolution, and other modes you are trying to use.
Apple’s display instructions recommend checking the connection and using Detect Displays when a connected screen is not recognized. A different or more expensive dock cannot override the Mac’s supported display count or modes.

If a USB accessory is missing or only charges
Check accessory approval on Apple silicon laptops
On an Apple silicon Mac laptop, a newly connected or unknown USB or Thunderbolt accessory may prompt for approval. Unlock the Mac if necessary and choose Allow only if you trust the accessory. If you previously selected Don’t Allow, reconnecting the accessory may show the prompt again. Apple explains that “Accessories can still charge your Mac (or themselves) even if you choose Don’t Allow,” so charging does not prove that data access has been approved. The setting is in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessories. Available choices include “Always ask,” “Ask for new accessories,” “Automatically allow when unlocked,” and “Always allow.” Choose a setting with the security implications in mind rather than lowering the restriction simply to troubleshoot.

Check that the accessory is switched on, its cables are secure, and any required power or software is installed. Disconnect intermediate devices and connect the failing accessory directly to the Mac. You can also look for it under Apple menu > System Information > Hardware. If it appears there but still does not work, consult the device maker’s instructions; reopening the related app or restarting the Mac may also help. Apple’s Mac port guide covers these general checks.

If macOS says “USB Devices Disabled” or an accessory needs more power
- Disconnect and reconnect the device.
- Try it in another port on the Mac.
- Bypass the dock or hub and connect the device directly to the Mac.
- If the hub is self-powered, connect its AC adapter.
Apple’s USB Devices Disabled guidance recommends these power-isolation steps. A device working when connected directly is useful evidence about the connection chain, but it does not by itself prove that the dock is defective.
Handle Thunderbolt 2 and Mini DisplayPort connections separately
Thunderbolt 2 and Mini DisplayPort connectors can look alike, but they are different technologies. Apple’s Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter guidance specifies that its adapter connects a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 to a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 device. It does not work with a non-Thunderbolt USB-C port or with a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort display. The adapter also does not deliver power over Thunderbolt, so it cannot charge the Mac through a connected display or device.

Choose a replacement only after identifying the mismatch
If a cable or adapter is the problem, match the replacement to the complete setup—not just the connector. Apple lists USB-C-to-HDMI options for connecting an HDMI display to a compatible Mac in its adapter guide; a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or adapter may suit a DisplayPort monitor when the Mac and adapter support the required video connection. A powered hub is relevant when a peripheral’s power needs require it, not as a cure for every recognition issue.

- The Mac model and the host port’s protocol: USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, 4, 5, or another interface.
- The Mac’s native external-display count and supported resolution and refresh rate.
- The display’s inputs and the adapter protocol needed to connect them.
- The required data ports and speeds, Ethernet, storage, card, audio, and number of downstream devices.
- Power delivery needed by the Mac and peripherals, including whether the dock has its own AC supply.
- The vendor’s Mac compatibility details and any required driver or firmware.
When checking an HDMI or DisplayPort adapter, confirm its compatibility with the exact Mac, display input, and desired resolution and refresh rate. The connector type alone is not enough to establish that a particular setup will work.
