Choose by the features your setup needs, not by the USB-C connector or the USB4 label alone. Thunderbolt 4 sets a defined baseline: Intel lists a minimum 40 Gbps PC speed, dual 4K display support and 32 Gbps PCIe data. USB4 products vary; Intel’s comparison lists a 20 Gbps minimum PC speed and a one-display baseline with no minimum bandwidth, while some USB4 products support more. Check the specifications of the computer, dock or peripheral, and cable together.
Thunderbolt 4 vs. USB4: what the labels guarantee
USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 are related, but they do not promise identical capabilities. USB-IF says USB4 is based on the Thunderbolt protocol specification contributed by Intel. The USB4 name covers products with different capabilities, so the label by itself does not guarantee a particular speed or display setup.
Intel’s comparison describes minimum PC requirements. These are specification baselines, not results from independent performance testing.
| Capability | Thunderbolt 4 | USB4 | What it means when choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum PC speed in Intel’s comparison | 40 Gbps | 20 Gbps | Check the exact rate stated for the computer, accessory and cable. USB4 products can offer more than the listed minimum. |
| Display baseline in Intel’s comparison | Dual 4K display support | One display, with no minimum bandwidth stated | Confirm display count, resolution and refresh rate for the specific host and dock configuration. |
| PCIe data in Intel’s comparison | 32 Gbps | Intel does not state an equivalent USB4 minimum | For an external SSD enclosure or other PCIe-connected device, confirm support and performance in the product specifications. |
| Certification | Intel lists mandatory certification for Thunderbolt 4 computers, accessories and cables | USB4 is a specification; capabilities vary by product | Look for applicable certification as well as the detailed specifications. |
| Cable information | Intel identifies universal 40 Gbps cables up to 2 meters | Capability depends on the cable and connected devices | Match the cable rating and length to the speed and features you need. |
Figures in this table come from Intel’s Thunderbolt technology comparison. USB4 is not limited to 20 Gbps: USB-IF describes USB4 v2.0 and operation up to 80 Gbps over certified cables. The listed USB4 minimum should not be mistaken for a maximum.

Which one should you choose?
USB4 may be enough for everyday peripherals and one display
If your setup is a single monitor and ordinary peripherals, a USB4 computer and accessory may be a good fit when their specifications explicitly cover the speed and display needs you have. Do not assume that two products marked USB4 necessarily offer the same capabilities.
Thunderbolt 4 is a clearer choice for defined minimums
If you need support for two 4K displays or want a more predictable Thunderbolt ecosystem, Thunderbolt 4 gives a clearer baseline through Intel’s stated requirements and certification. Still check the computer, dock, displays and their configuration: the label does not replace checking the specific products.
Check the actual system for fast storage or PCIe devices
For a fast external drive, enclosure or other PCIe-connected device, verify the host’s PCIe tunneling support and the accessory’s specifications. A USB-C port alone does not establish that the system supports the device’s expected connection or performance.
Check the entire connection, not just the port
USB-C describes the connector shape, not a complete capability set. A setup’s real capabilities depend on the computer port, the dock or peripheral, and the cable. A higher-rated cable cannot add features that the host or accessory does not support.

Will USB4 work with a Thunderbolt dock or older device?
USB-IF describes USB4 compatibility with USB 3.2 and USB 2.0, as well as Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices. It also says a connection scales to the best mutual capability of the connected devices. That is broad compatibility, not a guarantee that every USB4 product supports every Thunderbolt feature.
If you plan to use a Thunderbolt dock, especially for multiple displays or other Thunderbolt-specific functions, check the computer and dock makers’ compatibility details rather than relying on USB4 alone. For older USB devices, verify the specific port and adapter requirements as well.

Do you need a Thunderbolt 4 cable?
Not automatically. Choose a cable with a stated rating that supports the speed and features you require, and confirm that the computer and accessory support them too. If you need a universal 40 Gbps cable for a Thunderbolt 4 setup, Intel identifies Thunderbolt 4 cables up to 2 meters. For USB4, USB-IF’s mutual-capability principle means the connection is limited by the capabilities of the connected devices and cable.
Where to verify USB4 and Thunderbolt specifications
USB-IF’s USB4 overview explains the architecture, compatibility and capability negotiation. Its USB4 Specification v2.0 listing is dated April 2, 2026. For product labels, see the USB4 Specification: Language, Product and Packaging Guidelines, which describes USB4 performance names including USB4 20Gbps and USB4 40Gbps. Intel’s Thunderbolt 4 introduction also explains its minimum requirements and cable length.
