How pigs produce truffles
A pig is the usual farm source of truffles. It must be mature and fed, live in a Deluxe Barn, and be outside while conditions allow it to search. Pigs do not produce truffles indoors, in winter, or during rain or storms. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s pig page describes the game’s production mechanics.

Truffles appear on the ground where pigs walk. Their movement affects where the item lands, so check the pig’s walking area rather than expecting every truffle to appear in one spot. Keep eligible ground clear of debris and other objects. Crafted flooring and paths are excluded from the debris restriction described by the wiki.

How often a pig can find one
The wiki reports a 0.02% chance per frame for a pig to generate its first truffle while standing on a free tile, and describes an approximately 99.99% daily chance when it walks over mostly free tiles. These are game-mechanic figures, not real-world statistics. Friendship does not affect the first-truffle check.
After the first truffle, the extra-truffle chance is friendship divided by 1,500. At maximum friendship, the wiki gives a 66% chance for each extra-truffle check and an average of about three truffles per pig per day. Treat that average as a reported game-mechanics estimate, not a guaranteed daily yield.

Why a pig may not be producing truffles
- It is winter: Pigs stay inside and do not generate truffles.
- It is raining or storming: These weather conditions block truffle generation.
- The pig is not mature or fed: Both are prerequisites.
- The pig cannot get outside: It must leave the barn to find truffles.
- There are no eligible tiles: Debris and other objects can prevent placement. Clear the pig’s walking area; crafted flooring and paths are not included in the wiki’s debris restriction.
- The item landed outside the enclosure: Search around the fence, especially if the tile in front of the pig was occupied.
Sell a truffle raw or make Truffle Oil?
The better choice depends on the truffle’s quality and whether you have the Artisan profession. The wiki lists the base raw truffle price as 625g, rising to 1,250g for iridium quality. An Oil Maker turns one truffle into Truffle Oil in six in-game hours; the listed base oil price is 1,065g, or 1,491g with Artisan. Prices and mechanics are documented on the truffle and Truffle Oil pages.
Do not assume processing always earns more. Without Artisan, an iridium-quality truffle sells for more raw than the listed base-price Truffle Oil. Compare the particular truffle’s quality with your profession and the oil value before using the Oil Maker.

Truffle Oil also has uses beyond selling: it can go toward the Pantry’s Artisan Bundle, is an ingredient for a Rain Totem, can be used in tailoring and dyeing, and is requested for Mayor Lewis’s “Mayor’s Need” quest.

The wiki also lists Truffle Crabs and the Traveling Cart as occasional alternate sources. They are alternatives to the normal pig-and-farm-ground method, not a substitute for checking why a farm pig is failing to produce.
