To make an old PC feel faster, first find out whether storage, memory, an app, or background activity is causing the slowdown. Then try low-risk Windows maintenance before buying parts. These steps can improve some machines, but Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from them.
1. Find the bottleneck before changing anything
Open Task Manager and look at CPU, memory, and disk use while the PC feels slow. If one app repeatedly uses a large share of a resource, investigate that app before assuming the computer needs an upgrade. High disk activity, for example, can have different causes; a single snapshot is not enough to identify one. Microsoft recommends checking resource use and troubleshooting processes that consume heavily.

Microsoft’s Windows performance guide covers checking resource use and other troubleshooting steps.
2. Reduce unnecessary startup and background activity
Disable startup apps you recognize and do not need
Apps that launch when you sign in can slow startup and continue using resources. In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable only programs you recognize and do not need to start automatically. Do not indiscriminately disable security software or unfamiliar system components.

Limit background permissions selectively
For apps that do not need to run when you are not using them, review their Windows background-activity permissions and turn them off where available. Keep background access for apps whose timely alerts or syncing you rely on.
3. Free storage without deleting files blindly
Low free space can interfere with everyday use and Windows updates. Use Windows Storage Sense or the cleanup recommendations in Settings, and review what will be removed before confirming. Do not assume a particular amount of free space is enough: Microsoft says update space requirements vary by device and update.
If you need to remove personal files, confirm that you have another copy before deleting them. Microsoft’s guide to freeing space for Windows updates explains the issue and cleanup options.

4. Uninstall apps you no longer use
Remove programs you no longer need through Windows Settings rather than deleting their folders manually. Uninstalling can recover storage and may reduce background activity. Before removing anything, check whether it is a driver, device utility, or program another user depends on.
5. Install appropriate Windows and driver updates
Install available Windows updates when your version is supported. Updates may include fixes and performance improvements, though they cannot overcome every hardware limitation. For model-specific drivers, follow the computer maker’s guidance; avoid treating third-party driver-updater claims as a substitute for that advice.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the PC runs Windows 10, check whether that particular device is eligible for Windows 11 using Microsoft’s Windows 11 preparation guidance. Improved performance does not make an unsupported operating system supported.

6. Scan for malware
Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, so run a scan with Windows Security or another trusted security product already installed. If a scan finds a threat, follow the product’s removal instructions and check whether the slowdown continues afterward.
7. Close what you are not using, then restart
Many open applications and browser tabs can strain an older PC, especially when memory is limited. Save your work, close items you do not need, and see whether responsiveness improves. If it does not, restart Windows; this can clear temporary problems that persist after apps are closed.
8. Use Windows’ built-in drive optimization tool
Search Windows for Defragment and Optimize Drives, open the built-in utility, select the drive, and use Optimize if Windows recommends it. Let Windows manage the operation rather than installing a third-party registry cleaner or driver updater on the assumption that it will speed up the PC.

9. Consider an SSD if the PC still uses an HDD
An SSD is a plausible upgrade when an older computer still boots from a hard disk drive (HDD): Microsoft notes that HDD devices are typically slower to use than SSD devices. But compatibility is specific to the computer. Check its exact model and supported drive interface and form factor before buying; some machines may not offer a practical replacement.
Back up important files before replacing or reformatting a drive. If you are moving Windows and data to a new drive, plan how you will migrate or reinstall them before starting. Kingston provides general information on reviving an old computer and SSD and memory upgrades; confirm the requirements for your own device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems10. Add RAM only when memory is the constraint
More RAM may help if Task Manager shows memory pressure during your normal workload and the computer supports an upgrade. It will not fix every kind of slowdown. Check the exact PC or motherboard model for supported memory generation and capacity, available slots, and whether the existing memory can be replaced or supplemented. Laptop and desktop layouts differ, and some memory is not upgradeable.

Use a model-specific compatibility lookup before purchasing. Kingston discusses laptop and desktop RAM upgrades for several manufacturers in its RAM upgrade guide; Crucial explains how to think about how much memory a computer needs.
11. Weigh upgrades by symptom, compatibility, and effort
| Option | Most relevant when | Check before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| Software cleanup | Unneeded startup apps, background activity, low free space, or a resource-heavy app is contributing to the slowdown. | Review apps and files before disabling or removing them. |
| SSD | The PC still uses an HDD and slow storage responsiveness is a concern. | Exact model, drive interface and form factor, data backup, and migration or reinstall plan. |
| RAM | Memory is consistently constrained during the work you do. | Supported type and capacity, slots, and upgradeability for the exact model. |
| Repair, repurpose, or replace | Hardware symptoms persist, updates are unavailable, or compatible upgrades are not worthwhile. | Device condition, operating-system support, likely remaining use, and repair effort. |
No single upgrade is right for every old PC, and the available evidence does not establish a universal performance gain. Compare the likely benefit for the observed problem with the cost, effort, compatibility, and risk to your data.
12. Decide whether to keep, repair, repurpose, or replace it
Consider a repair or replacement if the PC has persistent errors, poor battery life, loud or frequently running fans, cannot receive supported updates, or consistently shows high CPU, memory, or disk use after you have addressed obvious software causes. These symptoms can point to a hardware problem or a machine nearing the end of its useful life; they do not by themselves identify the faulty component.
