Check whether charging registers, then inspect the panel, cable, sunlight, camera activity and temperature. The exact icons, settings and operating limits vary by model, so use your camera’s manual for product-specific instructions.
Why a solar camera battery can keep losing charge
The panel does not make a camera self-sustaining in every condition. The camera keeps using energy for recording, motion detection, live viewing and wireless communication; if that demand exceeds the energy coming in, the battery percentage falls. A panel may be intended only to maintain a charge rather than quickly refill a nearly empty battery. Arlo, for example, describes its general solar panel as a maintenance charger, not a way to bring a low battery back to full (Arlo support).

Think of the problem in three parts: solar input and its connection, the camera’s power use, and charging conditions or hardware. Work through them in that order so you can distinguish poor sunlight or a loose plug from unusually high activity or a battery/device fault.

Look at the battery history in the camera app over several days, rather than judging from a single reading. During sunny conditions, check for the model’s charging indicator. Icons differ: Wyze says its Solar Cam Pan 2K should show both a lightning bolt and a sun icon while charging, while Arlo documents a solar icon for its supported products (Wyze support; Arlo support).

If the app never shows charging in good sun, focus first on the panel, cable and connection. If charging registers but the battery still trends downward, the panel may be supplying some energy while camera demand remains higher.
2. Inspect the panel, cable and connection
- Wipe away dust, dirt and debris. Use a soft damp cloth if the manufacturer recommends it.
- Check the cable and plug for cuts, kinks, corrosion, moisture or looseness, then disconnect and reseat the connector as directed in the manual.
- Where the model supports it, test charging with the manufacturer-recommended power adapter. If the adapter charges the camera but the solar panel does not, that comparison points toward the panel, its cable or its placement; it does not by itself identify which part has failed.
Do not substitute an unapproved adapter or accessory. Solar panels and batteries are not universal: match any replacement or add-on to the exact camera model and its approved charging input.

3. Give the panel unobstructed sunlight
Place the panel where it receives direct sun without shade from eaves, trees or other obstructions, and adjust its direction and tilt according to the product instructions. Manufacturer sunlight figures are model-specific guidance, not a universal promise that a camera will stay charged:

Actual charging also depends on shade, weather, the panel’s angle and how much power the camera uses. If your location cannot provide adequate unobstructed sun, a compatible panel mounted in a better spot may help; check compatibility, cable reach and outdoor suitability before buying.

4. Reduce avoidable camera activity
Frequent triggers and long or high-quality recordings can consume more energy than the panel replaces. Check the event history and look for repeated alerts caused by moving branches, a busy road, vents or other activity the camera does not need to monitor.
- Adjust the camera’s aim, detection zones or motion sensitivity/range to avoid recurring false triggers.
- Shorten recording duration if the model offers that setting, and avoid leaving live view open longer than needed.
- Try the manufacturer’s battery-saving or optimized power mode.
- If supported, test a lower streaming or recording resolution. Wyze says higher resolutions require more bandwidth and can drain the battery more quickly on its Solar Cam Pan 2K.
- Check wireless signal strength. Weak Wi-Fi can contribute to faster drain on some camera models; improve the connection if possible.
Change only a few settings at a time and compare the battery trend and event count over several days. This helps show which adjustment made a difference.

5. Check temperature and normal charging behavior
Some cameras stop charging outside a model-specific temperature range. TP-Link lists a battery charging range of about 0–45°C and a solar-panel operating range of about −20–45°C for the cited Tapo guidance; Arlo says the battery in its cited camera guidance will not charge below 0°C or above 45°C (TP-Link support; Arlo support). These are not universal limits for every camera, panel or battery. Check the specifications for your exact model.
A pause in charging does not always mean a fault. TP-Link notes that some Tapo cameras may pause solar recharging at a high battery level and resume around 90% for the product family covered by its article. Follow the matching model guidance before treating a charging pause as a failure.

6. Know when to contact support
If the camera previously worked and these checks do not restore charging, record the battery level over time, whether the solar icon appears, approximate daily event count, weather, camera model and firmware version. Share those details with the manufacturer’s support team. A battery that consistently runs for less time than it used to may be aging, but the cited manufacturer guidance establishes no universal battery age or percentage at which replacement is required.
Replacement batteries and panels are model-specific. For example, Arlo names the VMA7600 for compatible Arlo cameras, while Swann specifies the NVW-600BATT only for NVW-600CMB and NVW-AS4KCAM (Arlo VMA7600; Swann support). Verify compatibility with the manufacturer before ordering any accessory or battery.
