Roman Space Telescope vs. Hubble: Field of View, Resolution, and Survey Speed

NASA’s Roman Space Telescope is designed to survey broad areas of the sky far more efficiently than Hubble, while delivering similar near-infrared image sharpness. Hubble, however, observes ultraviolet light as well as visible and near-infrared light, and remains useful for detailed observations of selected targets. The two observatories are complementary—not a simple replacement-and-predecessor pair.

How much bigger is Roman’s field of view than Hubble’s?

Roman’s Wide Field Instrument (WFI) captures a much larger patch of sky in one observation. NASA lists its field of view as 0.8 by 0.4 degrees. For a specific Hubble comparison, NASA lists the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Channel at 0.056 by 0.056 degrees. NASA summarizes the difference as about 100 times more area per observation for Roman.

The comparison depends on which Hubble instrument is named: Hubble has multiple instruments with different fields of view. The ACS Wide Field Channel figure is the baseline in this comparison, not a single field-of-view value for all Hubble observations. NASA’s Hubble–Roman comparison provides the figures.

Does Roman have the same resolution as Hubble?

For near-infrared observing, NASA describes the observatories’ resolution as very similar. That qualification matters: their instruments cover different wavelength ranges, and resolution depends on the instrument and observation.

Metal Earth Fascinations Hubble Telescope 3D Metal Model Kit
  • HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
  • NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
  • HUBBLE TELESCOPE – 1 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 3.00 x 2.00 x 2.50 inches.
  • FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
  • HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.

NASA’s comparison gives a sampling scale of 0.1 arcsecond per pixel for Roman WFI and 0.04 arcsecond per pixel for Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). Pixel scale describes how the image is sampled; by itself, it is not a universal measure of optical resolution. These figures therefore do not establish that Roman is simply sharper or less sharp in every kind of observation. NASA’s Roman and Hubble overview frames the similarity specifically in the near-infrared.

How much faster will Roman survey the sky?

NASA projects that Roman will survey the sky up to 1,000 times faster than Hubble while maintaining similar sensitivity and infrared resolution. This is a mission-level survey comparison, not a promise that every individual observation or science task will take one-thousandth as long. The actual time for a particular observation depends on the target and observing requirements.

NASA also projects that Roman will cover more than 50 times as much sky in five years as Hubble covered in its first 30 years. Both figures describe broad survey capability, not a like-for-like speed guarantee for every wavelength or target. See NASA’s Wide Field Instrument overview and its WFI poster, dated January 14, 2025.

What do the camera and mirror figures mean?

Roman and Hubble have similarly sized primary mirrors, but mirror size alone does not determine how much sky an observatory captures at once. Roman’s optical design and WFI are built for panoramic imaging. NASA describes WFI as a 300-megapixel camera with 18 detectors; those specifications provide instrument context, but megapixels and detector count are not substitutes for angular resolution or field of view.

Which telescope is better for a particular job?

Science need Better fit Why
Surveying large regions or mapping broad populations Roman WFI’s wide field and planned survey strategy let it cover large areas efficiently.
Observing ultraviolet light Hubble Hubble observes ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light; Roman covers visible and near-infrared wavelengths.
Detailed follow-up of a selected target Often Hubble, depending on the target and wavelength Hubble’s narrower fields and broader wavelength reach make it valuable for targeted observations; the right choice depends on the science question.
Near-infrared observations that benefit from a panoramic view Roman NASA describes Roman’s near-infrared resolution as very similar to Hubble’s while WFI captures a much wider field.

The practical distinction is broad, repeated mapping versus targeted investigation across a broader range of light. NASA characterizes the missions as working together to broaden our view of the universe, rather than one rendering the other unnecessary. NASA’s comparison discusses their complementary capabilities.
