Blurry security-camera footage usually points to an optical or scene problem—such as a dirty cover, fog, poor focus, or infrared glare—while blocky pixelation or quality that drops only when viewing remotely is more likely to involve stream settings or the network. Start by noting whether the problem happens by day or night, in saved footage or only in the remote feed, and across the whole image or just one area. Those clues help narrow down the right fix.
First, identify what kind of blur you see
“Blurry” can describe several different problems. A soft, hazy picture suggests an obstruction, focus issue, moisture, or reflection. Blocky pixels or a sudden drop in detail can point to a low-quality stream or limited connection. A picture that looks fine in daylight but poor after dark needs a check of night vision, lighting, and motion.

| What you see | When or where it happens | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Haze, soft focus, spots, or smudges | All the time or in one part of the image | Lens, dome cover, protective film, moisture, focus |
| Glare, bright patches, washed-out areas, or a bright ring | At night, especially with infrared night vision | Nearby walls, windows, railings, dome reflections, dirt |
| Blocky or reduced detail | Mostly in the remote live feed, or when the connection is weak | Resolution, stream-quality settings, Wi-Fi or wired network |
| Loss of detail on moving subjects | At night or in a dim scene | Available light, subject movement, infrared range and limits |
This is a practical way to sort the symptoms, not a universal diagnostic test. Camera features and app settings differ by model.

Dust, fingerprints, debris, water droplets, fog, or a protective shipping film left on the lens can soften the picture. On cameras with a dome, dirt on the inside or outside of the cover can also interfere. Check both the lens area and any clear cover for obstruction before changing settings. Xiaomi, Google Nest, and TP-Link VIGI identify dirty or obstructed optics or covers as possible causes of poor image quality (Xiaomi; Google Nest; TP-Link VIGI).

- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
- Use the cleaning method specified in the camera’s instructions.
- If those instructions permit, gently wipe the accessible lens or cover with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth, such as an optics-safe microfiber lens cloth.
- Do not use abrasive materials or solvents, or open the camera, unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your model specifically allow it.
- Check whether protective film remains on the lens or cover and remove it only if the instructions indicate it should be removed.
Cleaning can remove smudges and dirt, but it cannot restore detail that the camera did not capture because of low light, motion, or stream limitations.
If it is blurry only at night, look for infrared reflections
Infrared night vision can reflect off nearby surfaces and appear as haze, glare, washed-out areas, or bright patches. A wall, window, railing, nearby object, or camera dome may send infrared light back toward the lens. Dirt on the lens or cover can make the effect more noticeable. Reolink and other manufacturers describe reflections and nearby surfaces as night-image problems to check (Reolink; Xiaomi; TP-Link VIGI).

- Check whether a bright patch or haze lines up with a nearby wall, window, railing, or other reflective surface.
- If practical, change the camera angle or move the reflective object so it is not close to or directly in front of the camera.
- Clean the lens and dome cover using the camera maker’s directions.
Low light and a moving subject can also reduce detail, and infrared illumination has limits. Xiaomi lists inadequate lighting, lens performance, movement blur, and limits to infrared detail among possible factors for its CW100 camera; those model-specific notes should not be treated as specifications for every camera (Xiaomi).
If the image is blocky or worse remotely, check the stream and connection
Compare the remote live view with a saved recording or local view, if your camera and app support both. If one is clear and the other is not, note that difference: it may help distinguish the captured footage from the way it is being streamed or displayed. This comparison is a useful clue, not proof of a particular fault.

- One Unified Security System, Powered by 1st-Gen aosuBase: 32GB of local storage comes ready to use, holding about 120 days of loop recording. No subscription required. Connect up to 4 cameras to one base with a stable wireless connection and centralized local storage. Recordings saved to aosuBase are event-based, triggered by detected activity.
- Multi-Cam Live View for All-at-Once Monitoring: Watch up to four live camera feeds simultaneously in the aosu app and monitor multiple areas on one screen without opening each camera individually. Live View is available through the aosu app only; the base does not support HDMI or TV output.
- 360° Coverage with Pan, Tilt, and Smart Auto Tracking: Pan and tilt to see all around your property. When activity is detected, the camera automatically follows people and other movement to keep the action in view while recording, giving you a more complete view of what happens around your home.
- 2K (3MP) Clarity with Full-Color Night Vision: Capture clear details in 2K and zoom in up to 6x for a closer look. Built-in spotlights enable full-color night vision, helping you see important color details like clothing and vehicles after dark. For more discreet monitoring, switch to infrared mode for black-and-white night vision without visible lighting.
- Quick Setup with a Pre-Paired System: Connect aosuBase to your router's LAN port with the included Ethernet cable. Cameras connect wirelessly to aosuBase instead of your home Wi-Fi. The system comes pre-paired, so simply power on the cameras and complete setup in the app without pairing each camera one by one. The cameras are designed to work with the included aosuBase, and add-on cameras connect through the base as well.
- Open the camera’s app or settings and check its resolution and stream-quality or bandwidth options. The exact labels and available choices vary by model and software version.
- If possible, view the camera on a strong Wi-Fi connection or locally and see whether the quality changes.
- If you are using cellular data, try a stronger connection before concluding that the camera itself is producing poor footage. Google Nest Help says, “When you use a cellular connection to stream, expect a lower resolution.” That is guidance for the products and streaming context on Google’s help page, not a universal limit for all cameras (Google Nest Help).
- For a wired camera, investigate the network cable only if the connection is a plausible cause. Xiaomi’s CW100 guidance suggests network optimization and trying a higher-performance cable; first confirm that the installed cable is implicated and that any replacement is compatible with the system (Xiaomi).
Available bandwidth can affect stream quality: Google says its cameras may adjust resolution and compression to available bandwidth, while Milesight identifies low bit rate and lower-resolution secondary streams as image-quality considerations in its camera system. These are platform- and system-specific examples, not a general bandwidth threshold or CCTV standard (Google Nest Help; Milesight support).

If the image remains consistently soft after checking the optics, look for a focus control only on a camera with adjustable or motorized focus. Panasonic’s operating manual lists dirty optics and manual focus among possible causes of an out-of-focus image; do not assume a fixed-focus camera has a setting to adjust (Panasonic operating manual).

Follow the exact model’s support instructions for software and restart steps. Xiaomi’s CW100 guidance includes a firmware check, while Google recommends restarting some Nest devices if cleaning does not clear persistent spots or smudges. Menus and supported actions differ, so do not apply a step meant for another model (Xiaomi; Google Nest Help).

When to contact support or a technician
If the lens and cover are clean, night reflections and relevant stream settings have been checked, and model-specific focus, firmware, or restart steps have not helped, contact the camera maker or a qualified security-camera installer. Blur alone does not establish that the camera has internal damage. Xiaomi directs users to local official after-sales support when its listed checks fail, and Panasonic recommends qualified service personnel when its troubleshooting does not correct the problem (Xiaomi; Panasonic operating manual).
