A publish button that appears to do nothing can indicate either a failed publish request or a successful publish whose result never reached another tab. Check the server response or saved publish record first; then investigate how the page shares state between tabs. Cross-tab messages can prompt a tab to refresh, but they do not prove that publication succeeded.
First determine whether publishing actually succeeded
Separate the operation from the display. Inspect the initiating tab’s network response and, where available, the server-side publish record. If the server did not accept or persist the publication, a tab-sync change will not fix it. If the publication succeeded but another tab still shows old state, investigate client-side propagation.

This distinction matters because browser messaging APIs communicate between browsing contexts; they are not a durable record of a publication. Use the server response or persisted record as the source of truth, and treat a cross-tab event as a signal to update or refresh the interface.

What each browser tab needs to do
Tabs are separate browsing contexts. A page that changes its own state cannot assume another open page will automatically redraw. The publishing tab should update its own interface directly, while other tabs need a message or a refresh path.

Using localStorage and the storage event
A write to localStorage can produce a storage event in other same-origin documents. The event does not fire in the document that made the write, so the initiating tab must update its own state directly. The receiving tab should have a listener installed and should check that the changed key is the one it cares about. See MDN’s storage event reference.
Using BroadcastChannel
BroadcastChannel lets participating browsing contexts communicate through a named channel. The pages must use the same channel name and have listeners open to receive messages. It is a way to notify currently participating contexts, not persistent storage for tabs opened later. See MDN’s BroadcastChannel reference.

Choosing between them

These APIs have different behavior and fallback needs; do not assume every environment or application setup supports them identically. Test the mechanisms your application actually uses.

Prevent echo loops and duplicate updates
A receiving tab may apply a remote update through the same state-change handler used for a local user action. If that handler broadcasts again, tabs can echo the update back and forth. Mark remote changes as remote, or suppress broadcasts while applying them, so receiving a message does not automatically create another outbound message.

Make message handling idempotent: processing the same update twice should not produce a second publish or corrupt state. If a change can arrive through more than one transport or be repeated, a sender identifier and versioned message envelope can help identify its origin and order. These are implementation patterns discussed in Radan’s account of cross-tab locale synchronization and the SitePoint Team’s BroadcastChannel and fallback discussion.
Debug the failure in a useful order
- Verify publication: inspect the initiating tab’s publish request and response, then check the persisted record if the application exposes one. Decide whether the server accepted the operation before changing sync code.
- Compare both tabs: inspect their state and logs. Confirm that they use the intended origin and, depending on the implementation, the same storage key or named channel.
- Check the storage listener: if the app uses
localStorage, verify that the receiving tab installed itsstoragelistener and filters for the intended key. Update the writing tab directly; its own storage write does not fire that event there. - Check channel setup: if the app uses
BroadcastChannel, confirm both pages join the same named channel and that listeners are closed when they are no longer needed. - Trace remote application: follow what happens after a tab receives a change. Ensure applying it does not trigger a local publish or rebroadcast handler, and confirm duplicate delivery is harmless.
- Test the recovery paths: use two real browser pages or tabs. Publish in A and observe B, then reverse direction; reload a tab; try two near-simultaneous changes; and inspect what the interface shows after a notification is missed.
Those tests help distinguish a one-way listener problem, an echo or duplicate-handling problem, and a missed notification. They are diagnostic steps, not evidence that any particular implementation or incident has already been tested.

Make the interface reflect what is known
Show success only when the publish operation has been confirmed by the server or persisted record. After confirmation, update the initiating tab and notify other tabs to refresh or invalidate their cached view. If a receiving tab misses the notification, a later refresh should retrieve authoritative state instead of treating the message channel as the only copy.
