Why Your Playwright Suite Gets Flaky as It Grows—and How to Fix It

Fifty tests is not a Playwright cutoff. Learn how to trace flaky failures to shared state, parallel execution, CI limits, or fragile waits—and fix the cause.

There is no documented Playwright threshold at 50 tests. If failures start appearing as your suite grows, the larger suite may be exposing shared state, concurrency collisions, resource limits, or fragile synchronization that smaller runs did not reveal. Diagnose the failing tests and execution conditions before treating the test count as the cause.

Why flakiness can show up as the suite grows

Playwright creates an isolated browser context for each test, which separates browser-local state such as cookies and storage. That protection does not isolate backend records, external services, shared files, or account-wide settings. Two tests can therefore interfere even when they use different browser contexts. Playwright’s isolation documentation describes the browser boundary; its parallelism guidance covers shared state and test independence.

More tests can also mean more parallel work. Concurrent tests may overwrite the same record, change the same account setting, or contend for limited CI resources. A suite that passes with a few tests may expose those problems when more tests run at once. The number 50 is a symptom in your environment, not an established universal tipping point.

How to diagnose the failures

1. Capture which tests fail and what happened

Start with the reporter output. Identify failures that occur intermittently, and preserve traces or other failure artifacts in CI. Playwright’s best-practices guidance shows how to configure traces, including recording on the first retry. The HTML reporter can filter flaky tests.

For each failure, note the browser or project, worker count, CI job load, and any shared test data involved. These correlations help narrow the investigation; they do not by themselves prove a cause.

2. Compare one worker with normal CI execution

Run the failing selection with one worker, then run it under the normal CI settings. For example:

npx playwright test path/to/failing.spec.ts --workers=1

The CLI supports --workers=1; see Playwright’s command-line reference. If failures disappear when serialized and return under concurrency, investigate shared backend objects, account settings, filenames, and other external state. A passing serial run points toward concurrency as a useful line of inquiry, but does not identify the precise cause.

3. Check whether tests own the state they use

Each test should arrange the state it needs rather than rely on a prior test’s side effects. Give test-created records unique identifiers, for example IDs derived from testInfo.testId, and write files under testInfo.outputPath() so separate tests do not collide.

If data is intentionally shared per worker, partition it using the documented worker index. For a genuinely non-concurrent resource, named locks can coordinate tests across files, workers, and projects. Use locks narrowly: Playwright recommends independent tests over serial groups where possible. The options and trade-offs are described in the parallelism documentation.

4. Tune workers to the capacity of the CI agents

Playwright’s CI guidance recommends workers: 1 when stability and reproducibility take priority. It allows more parallelism on powerful self-hosted systems and suggests sharding across jobs to increase parallel execution. It also warns that setting workers above detected core capacity can lead to unnecessary timeouts and failures. These are trade-offs, not a universal worker count for every CI setup. Compare durations and failure rates at realistic worker counts on the agents you actually use. See Continuous Integration | Playwright.

5. Fix waits and locators at the point of failure

Use Playwright’s retrying assertions to wait for observable outcomes instead of inserting arbitrary sleeps. Prefer locators based on accessible roles, labels, placeholders, or test IDs over selectors tied to fragile implementation details. The best-practices guide covers locator and assertion recommendations.

What retries can—and cannot—tell you

Retries are disabled by default. When enabled, Playwright classifies a test that fails initially but passes on retry as flaky. That result is useful evidence of an intermittent failure, not proof that the test is healthy: a retry does not repair the underlying cause. Playwright also restarts workers after test failures, so a retry may run in a fresh worker. See Retries | Playwright.

If you want flaky outcomes to fail CI rather than quietly pass, configure failOnFlakyTests. The TestConfig API reference says this option was added in Playwright v1.52; check the installed version before using it. You can also inspect retry traces to distinguish timing or locator problems from setup failures.

Choose a fix based on the evidence

Use the observed failure pattern to decide what to change rather than lowering worker count by default.

  • Fails only under concurrency: look for shared records, account settings, files, or other external state; make data and output paths unique or partitioned.
  • Fails with one worker too: inspect the test’s setup, locator, assertion, and reliance on timing or prior state.
  • Fails under higher CI load: compare the worker count with available CPU and memory headroom, then test a lower realistic concurrency level.
  • Passes only after retry: examine the retry trace and fix the intermittent condition instead of treating the retry as the remedy.

Playwright’s official guidance states: “We recommend setting workers to "1" in CI environments to prioritize stability and reproducibility.” That is a stability-first recommendation; whether a different setting is appropriate depends on your CI capacity and results.
