A phone camera can stop working because of a temporary app error, a software or settings problem, an obstruction, or physical damage. An alert such as “Camera Failed” does not, by itself, identify a broken camera module. Start with reversible checks—restart, update, inspect the lens, and check storage and permissions—then use safe mode and other camera apps to help decide whether to seek service.
What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
Note exactly what happens: the camera app may fail to open, freeze, crash, show a black preview, lose focus, or fail to switch between the front and rear cameras. Also note whether the problem occurs in the built-in camera, in another app that uses the camera, or only in one third-party app. The pattern narrows the possibilities, but it does not prove which component has failed.

- One app fails: An app-specific error or conflict is plausible. Test the built-in camera and another camera-enabled app.
- Several camera apps fail: A system-level problem or hardware fault becomes more plausible. Google advises that crashes in other apps accessing the camera may indicate a hardware issue, but this is a diagnostic clue, not a definitive remote diagnosis. Google Pixel Camera Help
- Only one camera or camera-switching fails: Record whether the front or rear camera is affected. Persistent failure to switch warrants manufacturer support or repair diagnosis.
- The problem began after a drop, crack, or liquid exposure: Physical damage is possible. Avoid treating a software reset as a repair for visible damage.
These symptoms can have overlapping causes. A black preview, for example, does not establish that the sensor is broken.
Common reasons a phone camera stops working
Temporary app or system error
The camera app may freeze, crash, or refuse to launch because of a temporary error. Restarting the phone is a low-risk first check. Samsung lists temporary errors among possible reasons its phones may fail to launch the camera.

Corrupted camera app data or cache
App data or cache can be in a bad state. Clearing cache or resetting camera app data may restore normal behavior, though the exact controls depend on the phone. On Samsung phones, clearing Camera app data resets camera settings; Samsung says it does not delete saved photos or videos. Pixel guidance recommends clearing the Camera app cache.
Outdated software or conflict with another app
An operating-system or camera-app update may address a software problem. A downloaded camera, social, scanning, or other app may also interfere. Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps, making it useful for checking whether one is involved.

Low storage or missing permission
Insufficient free storage or a camera permission that has been denied can prevent an app from working as expected. Check available space and confirm that the affected app is allowed to use the camera.
Obstructed, dirty, or scratched lens; high temperature
A case or accessory may cover a lens, and smudges can affect the image. Google notes that some cases and accessories can unintentionally block a lens and affect focus on some devices. Inspect the camera glass, remove accessories temporarily, and wipe it gently with a soft, clean cloth. Scratches may require service. If the phone is unusually hot, let it cool before testing again.

Physical or liquid damage
A drop, cracked camera glass, or liquid exposure can cause hardware trouble. A camera-module fault is one possibility when the camera will not open, but an error message alone cannot identify the failed part. For Pixel liquid exposure, Google advises turning off the phone, drying the exterior with a soft cloth, and leaving it on a flat surface at room temperature. Do not use heat, rice, compressed air in openings, or objects inserted into ports.
Work through these checks in order
- Record the failure. Note the error, whether the preview is black or frozen, which camera is affected, and whether other apps can access the camera. Record recent updates, new apps, drops, or liquid contact.
- Restart, then check for updates. Install available operating-system and camera-app updates. Menu names and update routes vary by manufacturer, model, and software version; follow the current instructions for your phone.
- Inspect the lens and phone conditions. Remove the case or lens accessory temporarily. Check for dirt, a covering, or visible scratches; clean gently with a soft, clean cloth. Let a hot phone cool before retesting.
- Check storage and permissions. Confirm that the phone has free storage and that the camera app is permitted to access the camera. Settings paths differ across devices.
- Reset the camera app state. On a Pixel, follow Google’s instructions to clear Camera cache. On a Samsung phone, the Camera app’s Clear data option resets camera settings but, according to Samsung, leaves saved photos and videos intact. Other phones may use different labels or behavior, so check the model-specific instructions before clearing data.
- Compare apps and try safe mode. Test the built-in camera and, if available, another app that uses the camera. Then follow your manufacturer’s instructions to start safe mode. If the camera works there, remove recently installed apps one at a time and retest; safe mode disables downloaded apps, so it is a clue rather than a repair in itself.
- Back up and request diagnosis if it still fails. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if multiple apps fail, a camera remains unavailable, or damage is visible. Back up important data and follow the current repair-preparation instructions for your model. Google specifically advises Pixel owners sending in a phone to back up data and remove the SIM card. How to decide whether it is time for repair
Use the troubleshooting pattern rather than a single error as your guide. If the built-in camera works but one third-party app fails, start with that app’s update, permission, or support options. If it works in safe mode but not during normal use, investigate recently installed apps. If the built-in camera and other camera-enabled apps continue to fail after basic checks, or the phone has visible or suspected liquid damage, arrange manufacturer or authorized-service diagnosis.

Repair options, warranty coverage, diagnostics, and availability depend on the device, region, and applicable terms. Google says external or accidental damage, including water damage, is not covered by its warranty; coverage for a particular phone depends on its terms. Do not open a sealed phone or replace a camera module without model-specific repair guidance and appropriate skills. A factory reset is destructive and should be a last software step, after a backup and after checking the manufacturer’s current instructions.
