If your Milwaukee battery won’t charge, first check that the charger matches its battery platform, then reseat the pack and interpret the charger’s indicator using the manual for its exact model. A temperature-related pause may clear once the pack returns to a suitable temperature; persistent faults, visible damage, or an unresponsive pack should be handled by Milwaukee service. Don’t open the battery or charger.
Start by matching the battery and charger
Identify whether the pack is M18, M12, or another Milwaukee system, then read the charger’s catalog number from its label. Not every Milwaukee charger accepts every Milwaukee battery. Milwaukee says M18 batteries work with M18 tools and chargers, and that authentic M18 batteries must be charged on Milwaukee M18 chargers. Its official M18 battery and charger FAQ says: “Authentic M18™ batteries must be charged on Milwaukee M18™ chargers. Users should not use third party batteries or chargers.”

Compatibility is model-specific: for example, Milwaukee identifies its 48-59-1808 Rapid Charger as accepting Milwaukee M18 and M12 batteries. Check the specifications for your own charger rather than assuming that a charger marked Milwaukee supports every platform. (See Milwaukee’s 48-59-1808 Rapid Charger page.)
Work through basic checks before interpreting a light
- Check for visible problems. Look over the charger, battery, and contacts for visible damage or debris. Don’t use equipment that appears damaged, and don’t probe or modify the contacts.
- Reseat the pack. Remove it from the charger and slide it fully back into the correct bay. A poor connection or incomplete seating can prevent charging or affect the indicator.
- Read the exact charger manual. Find the model number on the charger and use its matching operator manual to identify the indicator pattern and any reset procedure. Do not apply another charger’s light codes or reset sequence.
- Follow only the listed reset steps. Some model manuals specify unplugging the charger for a period before trying again. That is not a universal Milwaukee procedure; use it only if your charger’s manual directs it.
What a flashing or absent indicator can mean
There is no single indicator chart that applies to every Milwaukee charger. The examples below come from the manual for the 48-59-1806 six-pack charger, document 58-14-1810D2 (2014). Use them only if that is your charger; consult your own manual for other models.
#1 Best Overall
- Product will either come in original packaging that is in less than perfect shape and has been opened to inspect contents or will come in non-retail packaging (brown/white box or white/clear bag). Charges pack up to 40% faster, reducing downtime and maximizing productivity.
- The charger accepts all M18 and M12 batteries, providing an upgrade for both systems.
- The charger indicates when the battery reaches an 80% charge.
- Single unit simplicity for quick charge of all M12 and M18 battery packs.
- Sequential charging: automatically charges the second inserted pack once the first pack is fully charged.
| Indicator on 48-59-1806 | Manual guidance |
|---|---|
| No indicator light | Remove and reinsert the battery. If the light remains off, unplug the charger for at least two minutes, then retry. If the indicator still does not come on, contact a Milwaukee service facility. |
| Red and green flashing | Check that the pack is fully seated and reinsert it. If flashing continues, the pack may be extremely hot, cold, or wet; allow it to cool, warm, or dry before retrying. Contact service if the issue persists. |
| Fast red flashing | The pack is too hot or too cold to charge. Let it return naturally to a suitable temperature, then retry according to the manual. |
| Continuous red | The manual identifies this as normal charging when the pack is within the acceptable temperature range. |
The fast-red-flash explanation and the two-minute unplug sequence above are specific to the 48-59-1806 manual, not general codes for all Milwaukee chargers. (See the 48-59-1806 operator manual.)
Let a temperature-related pause clear naturally
A battery outside a charger’s acceptable temperature range may not charge until it returns to that range. If your model’s manual identifies temperature as the issue, move the pack to a suitable environment and allow it to cool or warm naturally before trying again. If the manual identifies moisture, let the pack dry before retrying. Don’t use an external heat source, immerse the pack, or dismantle it to speed recovery.

- DUAL CHARGING: This charger can tackle both 18 and 12 volt Milwaukee batteries, holding one of each in the unit at the same time.
- SEQUENTIAL CHARGING: Do not worry about managing charge cycles. This will take care of your batteries one at a time, devoting full charging power to each one.
- BATTERY COMMUNICATION: The charger has a chip that communicates with its batteries, keeping track of how much they have charged. It saves you power by reducing the amount of charge produced as the battery reaches full charge.
- FAST ACTING: Compact batteries can be fully charged in as little as 30 minutes, while extended life batteries can be charged in as little as a single hour.
- INDICATOR LIGHTS let you know whether a battery is charging, fully charged, and whether it needs maintenance or not.
Allow for charging-time variation
Charge time depends on the battery pack, charger, and surrounding environment. Milwaukee’s published Super Charger examples come from its room-temperature testing; the company says actual results may vary. These figures are examples, not guaranteed times for other chargers or conditions. (See Milwaukee’s M18 battery and charger FAQ.)

The 48-59-1806 manual separately says a fully discharged pack at a normal internal temperature takes 30 to 90 minutes to charge, depending on the pack. That estimate applies to that manual’s charger and conditions, not to Milwaukee chargers in general. (See the 48-59-1806 operator manual.)

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Milwaukee
Contact a Milwaukee service facility if the charger or pack is visibly damaged, the manual’s reset and reseating steps do not resolve the indicator fault, or the battery remains unresponsive. The 48-59-1806 manual directs users to service when its specified checks fail and warns against disassembling the battery pack or charger; repairs should be handled by a Milwaukee service facility. Find service through Milwaukee’s service and support page.
If you are trying to determine whether the charger or battery is at fault, a cross-check with a known-compatible Milwaukee charger or pack may help only when the equipment is undamaged and the manuals permit it. Match the platforms and models; don’t treat buying a replacement charger as a guaranteed fix for a battery problem.

Check the exact battery warranty before replacing it
Milwaukee warranty periods vary by battery description and generation, so there is no single period that can safely be applied to every pack. Check the current terms for the exact battery model or ask Milwaukee service about eligibility. The cited charger manual says registration is not necessary for the battery warranty it describes and notes that manufacturing date may be used if proof of purchase is unavailable; those details do not establish the terms for every battery generation.
