A microSD card’s printed maximum is a peak capability, not a guaranteed transfer rate. The speed you see is limited by the slowest part of the card–host–reader chain, the type of files being moved, the card’s data layout, and whether the device supports the card’s performance features.
The short answer: a maximum is not a promise
When a package says a card can read at a particular number of megabytes per second, that figure normally describes a best-case peak measured under specific conditions. It does not mean every phone, camera, game console or computer will deliver that rate. The SD Association puts the distinction plainly: “As a characteristic of flash memory, actual transfer speed varies.”

Several independent limits can apply at once:
- The card’s own flash controller and memory may not sustain its advertised peak during every operation.
- The device hosting the card may support an older or slower SD bus mode.
- A USB reader, adapter or computer port can become the bottleneck.
- Copying many small files is fundamentally different from reading or writing one large, sequential file.
- Fragmented free space and the amount of data already stored can reduce write performance.
Speed-class symbols, such as C10, U1, A1 and A2, answer a different question from a peak “up to” number. They describe minimum performance under defined test conditions. Those guarantees are useful for matching a card to a workload, but they are not predictions of every file-transfer result.

Advertised maximum read or write speed
A manufacturer’s maximum read or write figure is a peak capability. Results can vary with the card’s implementation, the operation being performed and other data stored on the card. A maximum read number also says little about sustained writing for video or random access for applications. Treat it as an upper bound achieved in a particular test setup, not as a service-level guarantee for your device.

SD bus-interface rate
The bus is the electrical link between the card and its host. The SD Association’s bus overview lists these interface rates:
| Interface or mode | Listed bus rate | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Default Speed | 12.5 MB/s | Interface rate, not a guaranteed card benchmark |
| High Speed | 25 MB/s | Interface rate, not a guaranteed card benchmark |
| UHS-I | 50 or up to 104 MB/s, depending on mode | Maximum bus capability for the listed mode |
| UHS-II | Up to 312 MB/s in half-duplex mode | Listed interface capability; card and host must support it |
| UHS-III | Up to 624 MB/s | Listed interface capability; not an assumption for ordinary UHS-I cards |
| SD Express | Up to 3940 MB/s for the listed configuration | Later-generation interface capability requiring matching hardware |
These are bus figures, not promises that a particular microSD card will reach them. A card, host and reader must all support the same relevant generation and mode. A fast card inserted into an older slot falls back to what that slot can handle.
Minimum speed-class guarantees
Speed classes are intended primarily to make sustained recording requirements easier to understand. Their test conditions use sequential writing to an unfragmented free area, so ordinary use may produce a lower result. C10 and U1 each indicate a 10 MB/s minimum in their relevant class context, but the host and card markings still need to be compatible; a mismatched combination may not deliver the expected write speed.
| Mark | What it is designed to communicate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| C10 | 10 MB/s minimum sequential performance in the class context | Defined-condition minimum, not a peak or all-workload result |
| U1 | 10 MB/s minimum sequential performance in the UHS class context | Host and card compatibility still matters |
| A1 | Application Performance Class with minimum random and sequential requirements | Measured under specification conditions; everyday app speed varies |
| A2 | Higher application-class random requirements plus 10 MB/s minimum sustained sequential write | A2 features require an A2-capable host |
The slowest link in the card–host–reader chain wins
Think of a transfer as a chain with three main links: the card, the host device and the reader or adapter. Throughput cannot exceed the least capable link. The card may be marked UHS-I, but a camera with only a legacy slot, a laptop’s older built-in reader or a low-capability USB reader can force a slower mode.

- 【Compact and Portable】 - This USB card reader body is lightweight , strong heat dissipation and cost-effective. Multifunction card reader for any devices with USB port.
For a computer test, record all four details before drawing a conclusion:
- Card interface and markings (for example, UHS-I and a speed or application class).
- Host slot or device interface supported by the computer, phone, camera or console.
- Reader or adapter interface, if one is used.
- Whether you measured reading or writing.
If the computer has no suitable slot, the SD Association identifies a USB reader/writer as an option. That does not make every reader fast: check both the reader’s supported SD generation and the computer port to which it is connected. A reader that supports only an older mode can bottleneck a newer card, while a newer reader cannot upgrade an old host slot or a card that lacks the faster interface.
Your workload can make a fast card look slow
Large sequential files
One large video file or disk-image file is a mostly sequential workload. It is the closest everyday analogue to the sustained writing that video-oriented speed classes are designed to describe. Even then, the class minimum is not the same as a vendor’s peak read figure, and the device may impose its own limit.
Many small files
Copying thousands of photographs, documents or application assets requires repeated random access and filesystem operations. The transfer-rate display can be far below a card’s headline number even when the card is functioning normally. Comparing that result with a sequential class minimum is an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Apps and Application Performance Class
Application Performance Class addresses both random I/O and sustained sequential performance. The SD Physical Layer Simplified Specification Version 6.00 lists these minimums:
| Class | Minimum random read | Minimum random write | Minimum sustained sequential write |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | 1,500 IOPS | 500 IOPS | 10 MB/s |
| A2 | 4,000 IOPS | 2,000 IOPS | 10 MB/s, using the class’s command-queuing and cache features |
These are specification minima under stated test conditions, not guaranteed app launch times or a prediction of a file manager’s copy speed. In addition, A2 behavior is available only when both the card and the host support A2. An A2-marked card in an A1-only phone cannot provide the host-side A2 features.
Fragmentation and card state affect sustained writes
Repeatedly deleting, replacing and creating files can leave free space in separate fragments. The SD Association notes that writing to fragmented areas is generally slower than writing sequentially to an unfragmented area. Its speed-class conditions assume a completely unfragmented free area, so a card used for months will not necessarily reproduce its class-test result.

A controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the required workload. Decide whether you need sustained sequential writing for video, large-file transfer, or random performance for apps. Write down the card’s class and interface marks.
- Check the host specification. Read the phone, camera, console or computer manual and confirm which SD or UHS mode it supports. Do not infer the host capability from the card’s label.
- Check the reader and port. If a computer reader or USB adapter is involved, verify that it supports the card’s interface. Check which computer port the reader uses. Test without an adapter only when the computer has a suitable, compatible slot.
- Test reading and writing separately. Use a large file for a sequential test, and record read and write results independently. Do not use a small-file copy as a substitute for a sustained sequential test.
- Keep the comparison consistent. Use the same host, reader, port, file size and test method when comparing cards. A result from one phone or reader cannot establish what the card would do elsewhere.
- Isolate the components. Try the card in a known-compatible host or reader, then try a known-compatible card in the original setup. If several cards are slow in one setup, the host or reader becomes the leading suspect. If one card remains slow across compatible setups, the card is a stronger suspect, although this diagnostic pattern is not a laboratory proof of failure.
- Back up before changing the filesystem. If performance changed after extensive file churn, preserve the data first. Reformatting may alter the layout, but it is a general troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed or measured speed fix. Follow the device maker’s recommended filesystem and format procedure.
How to interpret a disappointing result
The result is near the host or reader’s interface limit
This usually indicates a chain limitation rather than a bad card. A card cannot transfer faster than the mode negotiated by its host and reader. Upgrading only the card will not remove that ceiling; the host and reader would also need to support the desired interface.
Sequential read is high but write is low
Read and write capabilities are not identical. A headline read maximum does not guarantee the same write rate, and sustained writing can be affected by free-space layout and background flash-management work. For video, judge the result against the relevant minimum sustained-write class and the recording device’s requirements.
Large files are fast but folders of small files are slow
That pattern is expected from different workloads. Random I/O, metadata updates and filesystem overhead dominate small-file copies. For app use, look at A1 or A2 requirements and host support rather than relying on a sequential peak number.
Performance changed after months of use
Data fragmentation and a different free-space layout are plausible explanations. Back up the card, repeat a consistent large-file test, and compare the result with the same host and reader used previously. Avoid destructive steps until the data is safe.

Choosing a replacement or reader without chasing a headline number
Match the purchase to the device and workload in this order:
- Compatibility first: choose a card interface the host can actually use, and a reader that supports that interface.
- Video next: select the sustained sequential-write class required by the camera or recording mode.
- Apps next: consider A1 or A2 random-performance requirements, and confirm that the host supports the corresponding class. A2 is useful only when both ends implement A2.
- Peak figures last: use maximum read/write claims only to compare cards tested under comparable conditions. They should not override host limits or class requirements.
- Capacity and device rules: verify that the device accepts the card’s capacity and filesystem before buying.
A “faster” replacement can still perform exactly like the old card when the original host or reader is the bottleneck. Conversely, replacing a card can be reasonable when controlled tests show that a single card is consistently slower across compatible hosts. No label alone can promise a particular transfer speed in your setup.
What the numbers do—and do not—tell you
MB/s is a throughput measure; IOPS describes how many random input/output operations occur per second. They answer different questions. A card can have a high sequential read rate and mediocre random-write behavior, or meet an application-class minimum while copying a folder slowly. Always compare the metric to the task you actually perform.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Likewise, a 10 MB/s class minimum is not a statement that every write will be exactly 10 MB/s, nor that a card marked for a higher bus mode will sustain that bus rate. The class test, bus specification and vendor peak claim describe separate layers of the system.
Bottom line
Your microSD card is often slower than its advertised speed because the advertised number is a peak, while your real transfer is constrained by interface compatibility, workload, card state and the quality of the test setup. Check the host and reader first, test large sequential reads and writes separately, use A1/A2 information for app workloads, and account for fragmentation before declaring the card faulty. The most useful card is the one whose interface and minimum class performance match the device and task—not simply the one with the largest number on the package.
