To measure a microSD card’s real speed, connect it through a compatible card reader, run a sequential read/write benchmark, and record the card, reader, host port, test settings and results in MB/s. Then compare those figures with the specifications for the exact card model and capacity. If you also need to know whether the card really contains its advertised amount of storage, run a separate write-and-verify capacity test; that test writes across the card and is not a read-only speed check.
What a microSD speed test actually tells you
A speed benchmark measures how quickly data moves between the card and the computer in one particular setup. The result belongs to the complete chain: card, adapter or reader, USB or built-in slot, host controller, operating system and benchmark workload. Change the reader or host and you can get a different number from the same card.

For a useful comparison, run the same kind of operation each time. A sequential read measures a large, continuous transfer from the card; a sequential write measures a continuous transfer to it. These are the figures most often compared with a manufacturer’s headline read or write specification. Small-file or random-operation results answer a different question and should not be presented as sequential speed.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA benchmark also does not prove that a card has genuine capacity. A counterfeit card can report, for example, a large amount of free space while overwriting earlier data when that space is used. A full write-and-verify test is designed to expose that failure. It can confirm whether data written throughout the reported capacity can be read back, but it does not establish that the card will reach a vendor’s peak transfer rate in every device.

Prepare a test that can be repeated
1. Record the exact card identity
Before testing, note the card’s printed brand, product family, exact model if available, nominal capacity, bus or interface marking and every speed-class symbol. Capacity-specific specifications matter: two capacities in one product family can have different advertised limits.
Find the manufacturer’s current datasheet or specification page for that exact capacity. Treat an “up to” figure as a maximum under the manufacturer’s stated conditions, not as a guaranteed result in your computer, camera, phone or game console.
2. Protect the data
A sequential benchmark can normally be run without deliberately replacing the card’s contents, but a capacity check writes through the selected space. Copy important files to another verified location before any test that formats, overwrites or fills the card. If you want to test all available capacity, an empty card is the safest starting point.
3. Use a capable reader and host
Use a compatible built-in slot or a USB microSD reader. A microSD-to-SD adapter can let you use a full-size SD slot, but the adapter itself is not evidence of a speed increase. The reader and the host connection must support the card’s bus mode if you want to evaluate the card near its advertised capability.
Write down the reader model, the computer or other host, the port used and whether the card was connected through an adapter. The SD Association distinguishes the card’s maximum speed from the bus-interface speed. A fast card connected through a slower reader or port will be measured at the limit of that connection.

Run a sequential read/write benchmark
No universal application, file size, cache policy or duration applies to Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile devices. Use a benchmark that reports sequential read and sequential write in MB/s, and document the tool and configuration alongside the result. Do not present an unspecified utility setting as a standard for every platform.
- Insert the card. Connect it through the reader or slot you recorded. Confirm that the operating system identifies the intended card and capacity.
- Close competing transfers. Stop file copies or other card activity so the benchmark is measuring one workload rather than a mixture of operations.
- Select sequential read and sequential write. Use the benchmark’s sequential tests rather than a random or small-file test when comparing with a sequential specification.
- Keep the conditions consistent. Use the same reader, host port, card state, test mode and units for every card you compare. If the utility offers several test sizes or cache choices, record the choices instead of silently changing them between runs.
- Run the test and save the output. Record the reported read and write values in MB/s, the test name and the date. A single result describes that setup; it is not a universal maximum for the card.
- Repeat after changing one variable. If the number is unexpectedly low, test the card through a known-good compatible reader or host. Change one part of the chain at a time so you can identify a bottleneck.
Report results in a form another person can reproduce: exact model and capacity, reader, host and port, operating system, benchmark name and settings, sequential read, sequential write and date. Without those conditions, two numbers with the same MB/s unit may not be comparable.

Check whether the advertised capacity is genuine
Use a capacity-verification utility when the question is whether the card can store and return data across its entire reported space. TP-Link’s SD-card guidance names H2testw for Windows and F3 for Mac. These utilities perform a write-and-verify process rather than a short performance run.
Windows: H2testw procedure
- Back up files from the card. Formatting and a full-space test can destroy existing data.
- Format the card if required by the procedure, then reconnect it and confirm that the intended drive letter is selected.
- Open H2testw and choose the card’s drive.
- Select all available space.
- Choose Write + Verify.
- Allow the utility to finish. It writes test data throughout the selected space and then reads it back.
- Save the final report, including the amount tested and any errors or usable capacity the program reports.
Mac: F3 procedure
F3 is the Mac example named in the same guidance. Follow the version’s documented write-and-verify workflow, select the mounted card, and make sure the card is backed up before starting. The principle is the same: fill the selected space with test data and verify that the data can be read back correctly.
Do not promise a fixed completion time. The cited guidance does not establish a universal duration, and the result depends on card size, actual write speed, reader, host and utility settings. A capacity test can take substantially longer than a short benchmark because it touches the selected space rather than a small sample.

Interpret the two outcomes separately
- Speed benchmark passes but capacity verification fails: transfer speed in that setup does not make the card trustworthy. Treat the capacity result as the warning and stop storing important data on the card.
- Capacity verification passes but speed is lower than expected: the card may be genuine while the reader, bus mode or host is limiting the measurement. Retest through a compatible known-good setup and compare with the exact datasheet.
- Both tests look reasonable: the results support the card’s reported capacity and the measured performance in that particular setup. They still do not guarantee the same speed in every camera, phone or console.
Understand the speed-class symbols
Speed-class marks are minimum sustained sequential-writing guarantees under defined conditions, not promises of a card’s peak benchmark result. The SD Association says actual transfer speed varies and that the host and card’s supported class and bus mode must be considered together.
| Mark | What it is used to communicate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| C10 | A conventional Speed Class symbol for sustained sequential writing | It is a minimum class requirement, not a measured read speed or a peak write result. |
| U1 | A UHS Speed Class symbol for sustained sequential writing | The host must support a compatible UHS mode; the symbol does not state the card’s maximum read rate. |
| U3 | A higher UHS Speed Class tier used where sustained video writing is required | Device compatibility and the reader’s bus still determine the observed result. |
| V30 | Video Speed Class marking associated by the SD Association with Full HD to 4K recording | It is an application-oriented minimum writing class, not a guarantee that every device will benchmark at the same speed. |
| V60 | Video Speed Class marking associated with 4K UHD to 8K recording | The camera or recorder must support the required mode; the mark does not remove host or workload limits. |
| SD Express classes | Speed-class information for cards and hosts using the SD Express interface | Both the card and host need the appropriate interface; a non-Express reader cannot demonstrate Express performance. |
The SD Association’s examples list U3/V30 for Full HD to 4K recording and V60 for 4K UHD to 8K recording. Those are suitability examples, not benchmark readings. A camera can also impose its own requirements, so choose a card that meets the device’s documented class and interface needs rather than relying on a label alone.
Why your result can be below the package claim
The reader or bus is slower
“Maximum speed differs from the bus I/F speed,” according to the SD Association’s bus-speed guidance. A card may be capable of more than the reader, USB connection or built-in slot can deliver. The benchmark then measures the slower link.
The host and card use different modes
A card’s interface marking describes what it can support; the host must also support that mode. If the host falls back to a slower compatible mode, the card can be genuine and healthy while the measured rate is lower.
Write behavior varies more than a headline number suggests
The SD Association notes that average write speed can vary with the device, operation and arrangement of data. A long sustained recording, a large-file copy and a small-file workload can therefore produce different write results. Keep the workload consistent when comparing cards.

The advertised number is a manufacturer maximum
Manufacturers commonly publish “up to” values under specified conditions. Those values are not interchangeable with speed-class minimums and are not independent test results. Compare a benchmark’s sequential read with a sequential read claim, and its sequential write with a sequential write claim; do not compare a class symbol with a peak read figure.
How capacity can change the advertised speed
Capacity is part of the product identity. A manufacturer can list different limits for different capacities in the same family, so identifying only the family name is insufficient.
For example, a SanDisk datasheet accessed in 2026 lists an up to 245 MB/s read speed for the 2TB, 1TB, 512GB and 256GB capacities of the specified Extreme UHS-I microSD family. The same datasheet gives different write rates by capacity and says specifications may change. The 245 MB/s figure is a manufacturer maximum for those listed capacities, not an independent measurement and not a promise that every reader will reach it.
| Capacity listed in the datasheet example | Advertised maximum read | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| 2TB | Up to 245 MB/s | Compare only with a sequential-read result from the exact capacity, with the reader and host documented. |
| 1TB | Up to 245 MB/s | Treat it as a manufacturer maximum, not a guaranteed everyday transfer rate. |
| 512GB | Up to 245 MB/s | Check the capacity-specific datasheet and the host interface before judging a lower result. |
| 256GB | Up to 245 MB/s | Do not use the figure to infer the write speed; the datasheet lists write rates separately by capacity. |
This example illustrates why the label, benchmark and datasheet must all describe the same capacity. It does not establish that every product in the family, every revision or every host will produce that number.

- Exact model and nominal capacity
- Printed speed-class symbols
- Rated bus or interface
- Device requirements for the intended workload
- Sequential read and write results in MB/s
- Reader, host, port, operating system and benchmark settings
- Whether the capacity passed a separate write-and-verify test
Compare like with like: sequential read against sequential read, sequential write against sequential write, identical units, similar test conditions and the same reader wherever possible. If a card was tested through a different interface, treat the numbers as measurements of different systems rather than a clean card-to-card ranking.
A1 and A2 application-performance classes should not be substituted for sequential benchmark results. They address application behavior, while a large-file transfer or sustained video recording depends on the relevant sequential performance and the compatibility of the host.
Troubleshoot an unexpectedly low speed
First, check the test identity
Confirm that the benchmark targeted the intended card and that the reported capacity matches the label. Verify that the result is from the sequential test and that read and write values were not transposed. Check the exact model and capacity against the current manufacturer specification.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Then isolate the connection
Repeat the benchmark with a compatible known-good reader and host. Use a port capable of the reader’s interface, and record whether the card is in a built-in slot, a USB reader or an adapter. If the result changes substantially, the original connection was part of the limit.
Finally, separate speed from authenticity
Do not conclude that a card is counterfeit solely because one benchmark is slow. A bus bottleneck, host limitation or workload difference can explain a low number. Conversely, a fast short benchmark does not prove the full capacity is genuine. Run the independent write-and-verify test when capacity is in doubt.
How to publish or document a trustworthy result
A useful report states what was measured and under what conditions. Include:
- The full card name, exact capacity and class markings
- The benchmark utility and the sequential test used
- Reader or built-in slot, host computer and connection type
- Operating system and any relevant test-size or cache choice provided by the utility
- Sequential read and write results in MB/s
- The date of testing
- Whether a separate full-space write-and-verify test was run and its outcome
Use wording such as “measured sequential read of X MB/s through this reader and host” rather than “the card reads at X MB/s everywhere.” That distinction preserves the conditions that make the number meaningful.

The shortest reliable workflow
- Identify the exact model, capacity, interface and class markings.
- Back up the card before any test that writes or formats it.
- Connect it through a compatible reader and host, and record that setup.
- Run a sequential read/write benchmark and save both results in MB/s.
- Compare each result with the exact capacity’s manufacturer specification, remembering that “up to” is a maximum.
- If capacity authenticity matters, separately run H2testw on Windows or F3 on Mac with a write-and-verify procedure across the selected space.
- If the speed is unexpectedly low, retest through a known-good compatible reader and host before deciding that the card is defective or counterfeit.
