A log timeline can appear to place an event before its cause without proving that either record is false—or identifying which clock or system is wrong. A timestamp is a claim made by a particular clock, not automatically a globally authoritative ordering key. To reconstruct what happened, distinguish when a service says an event occurred, when a collector observed its record, and what sequence is supported by local ordering or message context.
How can a log show an event before it happened?
Consider an illustrative example: service A records sending a request at 12:00:00.400, while service B records receiving it at 12:00:00.100. If B’s wall clock is 500 milliseconds behind A’s, the displayed timestamps reverse the real sequence: the send still preceded the receipt. Those figures are hypothetical, not a measured incident.

Distributed systems cannot assume that every host’s clock agrees perfectly. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s report on computer-system timing describes unavoidable clock skew between distributed nodes and its effects on absolute event times, causal ordering, elapsed-time calculations, and timestamp consistency. NUREG/CR-6083 discusses methods for relating event order to physical time within an error bound; a sorted list of wall-clock timestamps alone does not establish that bound.

So “the timestamps conflict” may be directly observable, while “host A’s clock was four seconds fast” requires independent synchronization evidence or a justified error bound. Without the actual records and system context, the title’s apparent impossibility cannot be assigned to a particular host or cause.

Which time does each log timestamp represent?
A record may carry more than one meaningful time. OpenTelemetry’s log data model distinguishes the event’s source timestamp from the time a collection system observed the record. These fields answer different questions, and the source timestamp may be absent. OpenTelemetry: Logs Data Model
| Time field | What it describes | What it does not prove by itself |
|---|---|---|
Timestamp |
Event time measured by the origin clock. | That the origin clock agreed with clocks on other hosts. |
ObservedTimestamp |
When the collection system observed the record. | That the gap from source time is pure network or delivery delay. |
A delay between these fields can reflect buffering or delivery time, but clock differences can contribute too. Treating their difference as a precise measure of transport latency is unsafe unless the relevant clocks and collection path are understood.

What evidence can establish sequence more reliably?
Keep wall-clock order separate from causal evidence. A service’s local sequence, explicit send-and-receive records, message identifiers, and request or trace context can help establish that one operation led to another even when cross-host timestamps disagree.
OpenTelemetry logging supports trace and span context and resource information that can help connect records across components. Correlation is not guaranteed: attributes may be missing, or records may be collected through separate paths. OpenTelemetry: Logs

Build the timeline from the strongest available evidence for each relationship. A trace ID can connect records belonging to a request; a message ID or explicit send/receive pair can clarify an exchange. Neither turns every timestamp into a reliable global clock.

Custom event timestamps
Instrumentation can assign an event timestamp that differs from the time the event was recorded. OpenTelemetry’s tracing API permits custom timestamps and notes that recorded event order will typically—but not necessarily—match timestamp order. Consumers should account for event timestamps that fall outside a containing span’s start and end. OpenTelemetry: Trace API, Add Events

Leap seconds and time-scale boundaries
Near a leap second, a civil-time label can be ambiguous: NIST explains that some implementations repeat a time label. Historical conversion between NTP or POSIX representations and UTC also has leap-second-related complications. NIST: Leap Seconds and Network Time Foundation: The NTP Timescale and Leap Seconds describe these issues. Check whether the records cluster around a leap-second boundary or passed through a conversion that could affect their labels; do not infer that from an ordering anomaly alone.

How should you reconstruct the timeline?
- Preserve the records first. Keep originals and metadata before normalizing or sorting. Capture host or service identity, timestamp field, time zone or UTC offset, precision, collector observation time when present, trace/span/request or message IDs, and collection route.
- Separate event time from observation time. Note which clock generated each field and whether either is missing. Treat the gap as a combination that may include clock offset and buffering or delivery delay, not as a network-delay measurement by default.
- Establish local sequences. Group records by source and use local ordering clues. Then connect cross-host records with trace context, request or message IDs, and explicit send/receive events where available. If there is no known clock-error bound, mark cross-host wall-clock order as uncertain.
- Check timestamp overrides. Determine whether tracing instrumentation supplied a custom event time and whether it falls outside the containing span’s boundaries.
- Inspect clock and conversion evidence. If available, examine synchronization and clock-adjustment records, UTC offsets, NTP state, host reboots, virtualization pauses, and leap-second or time-scale settings. These checks can help distinguish candidate explanations; the ordering anomaly alone does not diagnose a host.
- Write the finding at the right confidence level. Report a timestamp conflict when that is what the records establish. Name a specific clock offset or root cause only when independent evidence supports it.
