A keyboard key that appears to do nothing may be working as designed: a dead key sets an accent or other input state and waits for the next key. For example, pressing a circumflex dead key and then e can produce ê. The behavior comes from the active keyboard layout or input method, so check that configuration before assuming the physical key is broken.
What a dead key does
“Dead” describes the key’s immediate effect, not a hardware failure. The Unicode Consortium defines dead keys as keys that do not emit normal characters by themselves; instead, they change the input context. On many Latin keyboard layouts, a circumflex dead key followed by e produces ê. Unicode LDML Part 7: Keyboards

The physical key and the character it produces are not the same thing. The active layout maps physical key presses to character input, and that mapping can make a key behave as a dead key rather than print its symbol immediately. Microsoft’s Keyboard Input Overview
Why the next key may change
After a dead key is pressed, the input system holds a pending diacritic. If the following key supports that combination, the system can produce one accented character. Microsoft gives a German-layout example in which circumflex followed by o produces a character with a circumflex.

- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
If the next character cannot combine with the pending diacritic, Windows produces separate character messages: first the diacritic, then the character typed afterward. So a dead key may yield an accented character for one sequence and separate marks for another; the result depends on the layout’s mappings and supported combinations. Why an app may not see one character per keypress
Dead-key input can involve a composition sequence rather than an immediately emitted character for every key. The W3C UI Events specification describes the key value as Dead and documents composition events during dead-key input. A browser or other software that handles keyboard events may therefore observe an intermediate composition state before the finished character appears. W3C UI Events

- Check the active keyboard layout or input method. A layout may intentionally map a punctuation or accent key as a dead key. The behavior belongs to input mapping, not necessarily to the physical keyboard.
- Try the intended follow-up character. A supported combination may produce a single accented character; an unsupported combination may leave the diacritic and next character separate.
- Use platform-specific instructions to change the setting. The exact controls vary by operating system, version, and language layout, so consult current official documentation for your device rather than assuming one universal menu path.
These behaviors alone do not establish that the key is damaged. The cited documentation explains how layouts and input methods process dead keys; it does not establish that replacing a keyboard, keycap, or other hardware will fix a layout-driven result.
