Why Your Juicer Is Clogging—and How to Fix It

Juicers clog when pulp and fibers build up in the chute, auger, strainer or outlet. Here's how to clear a jam safely and keep it from coming back.

A juicer clogs when pulp or long fibers pile up faster than the machine can push them out. The usual spots are the feed tube, the auger (scroll), the strainer, or the pulp outlet. To fix it, stop feeding produce. Use reverse only if your manual provides it. If the jam remains, switch the juicer off, unplug it, and disassemble it as the manual allows. Cutting stringy produce smaller and feeding it more slowly stops most repeat jams.

Button sequences and disassembly steps differ by model, and this article doesn’t name your juicer. The specifics below are examples from named manufacturers, not universal rules.

Where the pulp is backing up

Manufacturer guidance describes buildup in several places, and which one applies depends on the design.

  • Feed tube or chute: pieces too large or fibrous to pass down. Kenwood says pieces that aren’t small enough may clog the feed tube, filter, or scroll.
  • Auger or scroll: long fibers wrap around it. KitchenAid Product Help states: “Pulp may build up on the screen and auger assembly and cause a jam.”
  • Strainer or filter: pulp residue packs into the mesh, so juice can’t pass through.
  • Pulp outlet: dry, compacted pulp blocks the exit. The Vida Sana Cold Press Pro manual covers blockages and severe-blockage cleaning.

Why it happens

  • Fibrous produce in long pieces. Kuvings USA recommends cutting high-fiber ingredients smaller to reduce fiber wrapping and blockages. Celery is the example KitchenAid gives.
  • Feeding too fast or too much. For manual-feed machines Kuvings says to feed slowly and alternate soft and hard ingredients. KitchenAid says to insert one piece at a time into its juicer attachment.
  • Leftover pulp from the last session. Pulp left on the strainer and auger dries and is harder to remove. The Vida Sana manual recommends a brush for pulp residue on the strainer, auger, and juicing assembly.
  • Overload or long runs. The Vida Sana manual and Kenwood’s support page both treat overload or extended operation as a possible reason for a shutdown, which can look like a clog.

How to clear a clog

  1. Stop adding produce as soon as pulp stops moving or the motor slows or stalls.
  2. Check the manual for your exact model before using reverse, a reset, or opening the assembly. Never force a locked lid. Kenwood specifically warns against this.
  3. Try reverse, if your juicer has it. Examples:
    • Kenwood PureJuice XL: reverse for 3–5 seconds, repeated two or three times.
    • KitchenAid juice and sauce attachment: switch from OFF to REV.

Don’t copy these timings to another brand.

  4. If it’s still stuck, switch off and unplug. The Vida Sana manual says: “ALWAYS turn off appliance and remove plug from the electrical outlet before cleaning.”
  5. Disassemble only as far as the manual allows. Clear visible pulp from the chute and outlet. Clean the strainer and auger with the brush or method the manufacturer approves.
  6. Reassemble and check that every part is secured before resuming. Restart with smaller pieces and a slower pace.

How to prevent repeat clogs

  • Cut stringy or high-fiber produce into shorter pieces.
  • Feed gradually. Alternate soft and hard items, and for KitchenAid’s attachment alternate celery with other produce so pulp doesn’t build up in the juice bowl.
  • Clean the strainer and other pulp-contact parts soon after each use, following the manual.
  • Don’t run the machine continuously past what the manual recommends.

When it’s not an ordinary clog

Stop and contact the manufacturer for your model if the juicer keeps stalling, vibrates, overheats, or gives off a persistent motor smell. Don’t keep restarting it against resistance.

Brush or replacement strainer?

A strainer cleaning brush is the most useful accessory for pulp residue, since manufacturers recommend one. Many juicers ship with one, so check the box and manual before buying another. A replacement strainer isn’t a routine clog remedy. Consider one only if the strainer is damaged, and confirm the exact model number and part compatibility first. Philips, for example, lists sieve CP9367/01 for its Viva Collection Juicer HR1857/81. That listing applies to that model only. If cleaning doesn’t stop a recurring stoppage, ask manufacturer support or an authorized service source.
