If your Pixel photos look flatter or more muted than the scene did, check HDR first. Google’s Camera Help states that to get wide-color photos, you can turn on HDR (High Dynamic Range). HDR is a capture setting that can affect color, but it is not a cure for every dull-looking photo, and the exact menu depends on your Pixel model and Camera app version.
What the HDR setting changes
Google’s guide to HDR images describes HDR as the route to wide-color photos. The option is an on/off capture control, so when it is off, the camera may not record the same tonal and color range it can record when it is on. The help article is written for the Camera from Google app and does not establish a single menu path that applies to every Pixel, so treat it as the reference for what the setting does rather than a step-by-step map of your phone. Google’s Pixel camera settings guide also describes a default Look that affects how HDR photos are processed. The same guide says Camera Looks is available on Pixel 11-series devices. If your phone is an earlier model, the Looks control you read about may simply not appear. Change your Camera app settings covers these options.
Confirm your model and app before following a menu path
Pixel camera options are not identical across phones or app versions, so a tutorial that names a menu item may not match your screen. Before you change anything, note:

- Your exact Pixel model, found in Settings > About phone.
- Which camera app you are using: the Camera from Google app or the default Pixel Camera app, and its version.
- Whether the HDR option is present in the settings you can actually see. If it is missing, the feature may not be offered on that model or app build.

Separate what the camera captured from what your screen shows
A photo can look dull because of how it is displayed, not because the camera recorded it dull. Google Photos documentation says HDR-capable displays show greater contrast, color depth, and brightness than standard displays, and that Google Photos can show Ultra HDR images. A photo viewed on a phone with HDR display support can therefore look different from the same file opened on a standard monitor, a older tablet, or in a messaging app that strips the extra data.

When you compare, view the same photo on the phone’s own screen, in Google Photos, and on a second device. If the phone’s screen shows the color you expected and the second device does not, the capture is probably fine and the gap is in display handling. Rule out lens dirt, low light and focus
Google’s photo quality troubleshooting covers problems that no color setting will fix. Dirt or a film on the camera glass can cause blur, halos, lines, or color distortions. Google recommends cleaning the lens gently with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. A microfiber cloth is one common example of that kind of material; cleaning the lens does not change how the camera processes color.

Lighting matters too. Google notes that low light can produce dark, grainy, or blurry photos. A scene that looks rich to your eye but is shot in dim indoor light, or under mixed lamps, can come out murky regardless of HDR. The same guide advises checking focus, so tap the subject before you shoot.

A practical order to work through
- Wipe the camera lens gently with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth, then shoot the same scene again.
- Shoot in good, even light and tap the subject to set focus.
- Open the camera settings as described in Google’s Camera app guide and look for HDR. If the option is there, turn it on and shoot again. If it is missing, record your model and app version.
- View the new photo on the phone, in Google Photos, and on a second screen. Compare the results before deciding the camera is at fault.
- If the photo is still dull on every check, you have a model-specific or app-specific question, and your model and app version are the details to report to Google.
Once you know which check made the difference, you can keep that setting and skip the rest.
