Surfshark can be worth $2.49 a month, but only if you are willing to commit to a long term. That figure is the monthly equivalent of the Starter plan on Surfshark’s 24-month term. You pay for the whole term at checkout, and when it ends the plan renews at a separate, higher price. If you want to pay month to month, the same Starter tier costs $16.45 a month, which makes the length of commitment the central decision.
What the $2.49 figure actually means
Surfshark’s plan comparison lists three tiers across three commitment lengths. It dates these prices to July 30, 2026, and says they are subject to change. The figures below are monthly equivalents. The two right-hand total columns are our arithmetic on those equivalents, not totals Surfshark displays, and they exclude tax, currency conversion, and coupons.

| Plan | 24-month equivalent | 24-month total (calculated) | 12-month equivalent | 12-month total (calculated) | Monthly billing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $2.49/month | $59.76 | $3.39/month | $40.68 | $16.45/month |
| One | $2.79/month | $66.96 | $3.59/month | $43.08 | $18.95/month |
| One+ | $4.49/month | $107.76 | $7.49/month | $89.88 | $21.85/month |
The practical point is that a 24-month Starter subscription is a single payment of roughly $60 before tax, not a $2.49 charge each month. Checkout is the figure that counts, and it can differ by country, currency, VAT, and any coupon you apply.

Surfshark’s pricing page says the two-year plan is billed once at the start and then annually after it expires. It also says renewal is charged at the applicable renewal price for your account. Security.org, in a review updated September 24, 2026, reports the following renewal prices. These are the reviewer’s figures, not a Surfshark statement, so confirm them against what your checkout shows.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Starter: $79 per year
- One: $99 per year
- One+: $119 per year
Before you pay, work through these checks:
- Confirm that the selected plan length is 24 months, not the monthly option.
- Read the total charged today, including any VAT or local tax, in the currency shown.
- Apply your coupon, if you have one, and check whether the total changes.
- Find the renewal price and renewal date on the checkout or account page, and compare it with the figures above.
- Set a calendar reminder a few weeks before the renewal date so you can decide whether to keep the plan.
What each tier includes
Starter
Starter covers the VPN and Alternative ID. Surfshark describes the VPN as offering unlimited simultaneous connections, Dynamic Multi Hop, Bypasser (split tunneling), CleanWeb ad and cookie pop-up blocking, and rotating IP on macOS.
One
One adds Antivirus, Alert data-leak alerts, and scam-protection features to everything in Starter. Surfshark’s plan article says scam protection launched in August 2026. On a 24-month term, One costs $0.30 a month more than Starter, which is $7.20 over the full term by our calculation.
One+
One+ adds Incogni data removal to the One bundle. On a 24-month term it costs $2.00 a month more than Starter, or $48.00 over the full term by our calculation. Whether that is worth paying depends on whether you want a service that requests removal of your personal data from data brokers, a feature the other tiers do not include.

Which tier fits
- Choose Starter if you need a VPN and nothing else, or you already have antivirus and data-removal tools you are happy with.
- Choose One if you want the VPN plus antivirus, data-leak alerts, and scam protection in one subscription, and the $0.30 monthly difference is acceptable.
- Choose One+ only if data removal is a real priority for you. Otherwise the extra $2.00 a month over Starter buys a feature you may not use.
Compare each tier’s added features and price against services you already pay for. A higher tier is not automatically a better deal.
Devices and connections
Surfshark says a subscription allows unlimited simultaneous device connections. Its pricing page says the free trial is limited to three devices until the trial ends. TechRadar’s review describes unlimited connections as a differentiating benefit. This suits a household with many phones, laptops, and tablets, but it does not guarantee identical speed or reliability on every device or network.
Trial, refund, and cancellation terms
Surfshark’s official page describes a 30-day money-back guarantee. That is a refund policy. The 7-day free trial is a separate offer, available through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store under conditions that include selecting the 12-month option. Do not treat the trial and the refund guarantee as the same thing. The sources available for this update do not state how the 30-day guarantee applies to renewal charges, so check the terms shown at checkout before you buy.

Privacy and security evidence
Surfshark’s trust center publishes several third-party assessments. Each one covers a specific product or scope, so read them narrowly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →No-logs assessments
Surfshark reports no-logs assessments by Deloitte in 2023 and 2025. A no-logs assessment checks whether a provider’s stated data-retention policy matches its practices as examined at the time. It is not a penetration test of the provider’s servers.
Infrastructure audit
Surfshark reports an infrastructure security audit by SecuRing, completed in December 2025. Surfshark says it found no critical vulnerabilities. That is the provider’s own description of the audit’s outcome. It shows that the audit was done and what the provider reports it found. It does not show that no risks exist, and it does not establish that every platform app has the same audit coverage.

Antivirus certification
Surfshark reports AV-Test scores for Surfshark Antivirus of 6/6 for protection, 4.5/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability. These scores apply only to the antivirus product, which is included in the One and One+ tiers. They say nothing about the VPN’s speed or security.
Android app
The trust center also states that Surfshark’s Android app passed MASA assessments. That claim applies to the Android app only, not to the VPN service on other platforms.
What independent reviews say
TechRadar rates Surfshark highly overall and among cheap VPNs, and highlights the $2.49 entry figure and unlimited connections. Security.org, in its September 24, 2026 update, reports its own testing and describes Surfshark as a budget-value option. Both are publisher assessments. Neither should be read as a guarantee of streaming access or a universal speed result.

Current offer context
Tom’s Guide’s deal page, last updated October 5, 2026, lists Surfshark at a $2.49 monthly equivalent with three extra months. Treat that as a time-sensitive offer. The price you see may depend on your location, tax, coupon, and the tier you select.
Verdict
Surfshark is worth $2.49 a month if you plan to use a VPN for at least two years, want one subscription to cover many devices, and accept an upfront payment of about $60 for Starter. Choose Starter for VPN-only use, One if you want antivirus and scam protection, and One+ only if automated data removal is a clear need. If you want to test the service month to month, or you are not sure you will still use it in two years, the monthly plan at $16.45 is the more honest price to compare against your alternatives.
