It is not, by itself, a sign that the watch has a fault. Open the watch’s notifications and review or clear the unread items; if you do not want the indicator displayed, you can turn it off in Galaxy Wearable notification settings.
What the orange dot means
Samsung’s current support guidance describes the mark as the “New notification indicator on watch face”: it appears when unread notifications are present. The dot signals unread status, not how many notifications you have. Samsung’s current general support instructions do not promise that every Galaxy Watch model will use the same color or placement.

On Tizen-based watch faces, Samsung’s developer documentation specifies a dot at the 9 o’clock position. It says one dot appears regardless of the number of notifications; orange denotes regular notifications and red denotes urgent ones. Treat that color distinction as Tizen-specific, not a universal rule for newer Galaxy Watch models. Samsung also notes that distribution of Tizen-based watch apps has been discontinued.

How to clear the dot
- Wake the watch and open its notifications. Depending on the model and watch-face settings, swipe down from the top of the screen or use the watch’s notifications shortcut.
- Review or clear the unread notifications. Once no notifications remain unread, the indicator should disappear.
Exact gestures and labels can differ by watch model and software. Samsung’s support guidance confirms the relationship between the indicator and unread notifications, but does not prescribe one universal on-watch gesture for every model.
How to hide the indicator
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected phone.
- Go to Watch settings → Notifications → Advanced settings.
- Find the setting for the new notification indicator on the watch face and turn it off, if that option is available on your watch and app version.
Samsung documents this setting path in its US instructions. Menu names and availability may vary with the phone, provider, watch model, region, and software version. Hiding the dot changes the display, not whether notifications arrive.

If the dot remains after you check notifications
- Return to the watch’s notification list and check for an item that is still unread; the indicator can represent unread notifications even when there is more than one.
- If the dot’s color or position differs from the Tizen description, do not assume that it indicates urgency on a newer model. Samsung’s general current guidance establishes unread status, while the orange/red rule is documented specifically for Tizen-based watch faces.
- If the indicator is present but the relevant setting is missing, check the Galaxy Wearable app and watch software for the labels available to your devices. Samsung’s instructions do not establish identical screens across all models or regions.
